Chapter 6 - Chapter 6 - Rain on the River Bridge

Late afternoon sunlight stretched across the river as Li Wei walked along the pedestrian bridge.

The water below moved slowly, reflecting the gray sky and the tall buildings on both sides of the city. Small boats drifted near the docks while traffic hummed across the nearby highway.

He had just left the Linhai City Museum.

The new reward still felt strange.

Not dramatic.

But noticeable.

He could clearly remember every exhibit he had read during the last hour—the dates, the historical routes, even the small details on the maps.

It was like his brain had quietly decided not to forget things anymore.

Li Wei rested his arms on the bridge railing for a moment.

Then he spoke in his mind.

"System."

[ONLINE]

"So each place gives a different ability?"

[REWARDS ADAPT TO HOST DEVELOPMENT]

"Meaning it chooses what I need?"

[CONFIRMED]

Li Wei nodded slightly.

That explanation matched what he had already experienced.

The library improved his thinking speed.

The university archive improved his reasoning.

And the museum improved his memory.

They all had something in common.

They made learning easier.

Which made sense if the system was connected to something called the Archive of Absolute Knowledge.

A light drizzle began falling as he left the bridge.

The streets slowly grew darker as evening approached.

Li Wei pulled up his hood and continued walking toward the bus stop.

He didn't feel like taking a taxi.

Walking helped him think.

Twenty minutes later he reached his apartment building.

The stairwell smelled faintly of dust and old paint.

When he opened the door to Room 407, Chen Ming was already inside.

"Finally!" Chen Ming said from the desk chair. "Where were you?"

"Museum."

Chen Ming blinked.

"…Again with the studying?"

"Something like that."

Chen Ming tossed him a bag of snacks.

"I bought these from the campus store. Payment for helping me with the assignment yesterday."

Li Wei caught the bag.

"Fair deal."

Chen Ming leaned back in the chair.

"You know what's weird?" he said.

"What?"

"You've been visiting a lot of libraries and archive places lately."

Li Wei opened the snack bag.

"They're quiet."

"That's suspicious," Chen Ming replied.

"Why?"

"Because quiet places usually mean exams."

Li Wei laughed.

"That's not wrong."

Chen Ming stood up and grabbed his jacket.

"I'm heading back to campus. Robotics club meeting."

"You're really serious about that club now."

"Free snacks," Chen Ming said proudly.

He left the room a moment later.

The apartment became quiet again.

Li Wei sat at the desk and opened his notebook.

He wrote down three lines.

Library — Cognitive Expansion

University Archive — Analytical Thinking

Museum — Memory Enhancement

Then he looked at the page for a moment.

Each sign-in improved his mind in some way.

Which meant the system was slowly shaping something.

Not strength.

Not combat.

Knowledge.

Understanding.

Li Wei tapped the pen against the notebook.

"System."

[ONLINE]

"How many information nodes exist in this city?"

There was a brief pause.

[ESTIMATED NODES WITHIN LINHAI CITY: 37]

Li Wei raised his eyebrows.

"Thirty-seven?"

[NUMBER MAY CHANGE BASED ON DATA CONDITIONS]

That was more than he expected.

Thirty-seven possible locations meant at least a month of sign-ins if he visited one each day.

Maybe more if some required special access.

Li Wei leaned back in his chair.

"That's a lot of walking."

Meanwhile—

In the underground monitoring facility across the city—

The technician stared at the screen again.

Two new signals had appeared in the last twenty-four hours.

ARCHIVE NODE — PUBLIC LIBRARY

ARCHIVE NODE — CITY MUSEUM

Both signals originated from the same city.

The same network region.

The technician turned to the man standing behind him.

"Director… the pattern is unusual."

The director studied the data quietly.

"Yes," he said.

"Normally these activations happen years apart."

"But now we've detected two in two days."

The technician hesitated.

"Could someone be triggering them intentionally?"

The director's expression remained calm.

"Possibly."

He looked back at the screen.

"If that's true…"

He paused.

"…then someone has connected to the Archive."

Back in his apartment, Li Wei closed the notebook.

Outside the window, the rain slowly grew heavier.

He checked the time.

The next sign-in would be available tomorrow morning.

For now, there was nothing else to do.

So he opened his laptop and started working on the next assignment.

Far below the city—

Hidden within layers of forgotten infrastructure—

A silent system continued processing new data.

For the first time in decades, the Archive network had begun receiving regular activity again.

And somewhere within its immense database—

A new entry appeared.

ACTIVE HOST DETECTED
