Chapter 9 - Chaos In The Shadows

The woods were quieter than usual. Sunlight barely filtered through the thick canopy, casting fragmented shadows across the mossy ground. The air smelled of damp earth and pine, a strange calm settling over the forest.

Rio slowed her pace, glancing around. "Ryota… do you realize how far we've wandered from our usual grind spot?"

Ryota scratched the back of his head, nervously looking up at the towering trees. "Uh… yeah. I thought we were just exploring a bit. It's kind of peaceful out here."

Rio frowned. "Peaceful, sure. But we're deep in the woods. And I have a bad feeling about this…"

Her sharp eyes scanned the map on her interface. A faint glimmer of green caught her attention. Rio's brows furrowed. "Wait… I remember. There's a dungeon somewhere around here."

Ryota blinked. "A dungeon?"

Rio nodded, her tone serious but with a hint of excitement. "Yeah. It's a small, hidden dungeon, probably meant for solo or duo exploration. We could clear it if you're up for it."

Ryota grinned. "Always! You know me—I'm all about chaotic adventures."

Rio gave him a side glance. "You mean, reckless adventures. Just remember, we're in a… different timeline now. Nobody here knows who we are. Our names, our past achievements, none of it matters."

Ryota's grin faltered for a split second before returning. "That's fine by me. Makes things more fun."

Rio sighed, rubbing her temples. "Fun is one word for it. Let's just try not to die."

They moved cautiously, stepping over roots and fallen branches as they approached the faint glimmer marking the dungeon entrance. The mouth of the cave yawned before them, dark and silent, with faint runes glowing around the archway—an ominous welcome.

"This dungeon…" Rio muttered. "It's not in the usual rotation. Probably hasn't been touched in years."

Ryota tilted his head. "So it's abandoned. That means… we get first dibs on anything inside?"

Rio raised an eyebrow. "If you don't die, yes. But don't get cocky."

She tightened her grip on her curved saber. Ryota rolled his shoulders, hands already twitching with anticipation. Together, they stepped into the shadows.

Inside, the air was cooler, heavy with the scent of stone and dust. Faint motes of magic drifted lazily through the beams of light streaming from cracks in the ceiling.

"This place is… weird," Ryota whispered, more to himself than to Rio.

Rio didn't reply immediately. She was scanning every corner, every shadow, every rune. "Keep your guard up. Even if it's a low-level dungeon, it's… not exactly normal. I don't trust abandoned dungeons."

Ryota grinned again. "Abandoned or not, I'm excited. Who knows what we'll find?"

Rio glanced at him, her lips twitching in a mix of exasperation and amusement. "You really are ridiculous sometimes."

The sound of faint scraping echoed from deeper in the dungeon. Both of them froze. Rio's eyes narrowed. "See? Told you."

Ryota's grin didn't falter. "Then let's go meet our new friends."

And with that, they moved forward together, stepping into the unknown of a timeline where history hadn't yet remembered them—and where the first moves they made could define everything.

The scraping grew louder, echoing off the stone walls, bouncing unpredictably down the narrow corridor. Shadows flickered across the walls, as if the dungeon itself was alive and watching them.

Rio slowed her pace, gripping her saber tighter. "Stay close. I don't want us getting split up here."

Ryota nodded quickly, keeping a careful distance behind her. "Of course. Wherever you go, I follow."

Rio scanned the area, her sharp eyes catching the faint glimmer of green at the end of the corridor. "See that? That's the dungeon's central chamber. Could be a trap… or a guardian."

Ryota swallowed. "Then we… proceed carefully?"

"Exactly." Rio's tone was serious, but there was a faint edge of excitement under her caution. "I don't want to take unnecessary risks. Follow my lead exactly."

"Yes, Rio," Ryota said, his voice steady. "I won't rush ahead."

They rounded a corner, and a small chamber opened up before them. The walls were lined with ancient carvings—some decorative, some clearly warnings—and in the center of the room sat a pedestal, cracked and weathered, glowing faintly with green runes.

Rio studied the runes carefully. "This pedestal… it's not just a display. It's either a puzzle or a magical ward. Don't touch it until I tell you to."

Ryota nodded immediately, keeping his hands at his sides. "Got it. I'll just watch and follow your instructions."

Rio cautiously approached the pedestal, examining the runes with her interface. "Hmm… seems like a containment spell. If we trigger it wrong, it could release a guardian—or worse."

Ryota stayed perfectly still, eyes on Rio. "I trust you. Whatever you say, I'll follow."

With a careful touch, Rio activated the pedestal. A shimmer of green energy swirled around it, coalescing into a small humanoid figure, seemingly made entirely of light, its eyes glowing with awareness.

"Who enters my domain?" the figure's voice echoed, soft but firm.

Ryota instinctively stepped behind Rio, hands slightly raised, letting her take the lead. "We… we're just explorers. We mean no harm."

Rio's grip on her saber tightened, her gaze sharp. "We're here to clear the dungeon and uncover what's hidden. That's all."

The glowing figure tilted its head, studying them. "Few intruders reach this far. Few leave unchanged."

Ryota whispered to Rio, his voice calm but cautious. "What should we do next?"

Rio exhaled slowly, scanning the chamber. "We proceed carefully. Stick close, watch my back, and follow my instructions exactly. Understood?"

"Understood," Ryota said without hesitation, falling into step beside her.

The figure raised its arms, and the runes along the walls flared to life. The dungeon itself seemed to shift, corridors rearranging, ceilings lowering, floors trembling.

Rio muttered, "This isn't just a simple dungeon… it's alive. Stay alert."

Ryota nodded, matching her pace, his focus entirely on Rio. "I'm ready. Just tell me what to do."

Together, they stepped fully into the chamber, ready to face whatever trials this timeline—and this dungeon—had in store.

The scraping grew louder, echoing off the stone walls, bouncing unpredictably down the narrow corridor. Shadows flickered across the walls, as if the dungeon itself was alive and watching them.

Rio slowed her pace, gripping her saber tightly. "Stay close. I don't want us getting split up here."

Ryota nodded quickly, keeping a careful distance behind her. "Of course. Wherever you go, I follow."

Rio's eyes caught the faint glimmer of green at the end of the corridor. "See that? That's the dungeon's central chamber. Could be a trap… or a guardian. Follow my lead exactly."

"Yes, Rio," Ryota said, stepping carefully, his eyes scanning the walls for any danger.

The chamber opened before them, walls lined with ancient carvings—some warnings, some decorative—and in the center, a pedestal glowed faintly with green runes.

Rio's tone sharpened. "This pedestal isn't just for show. Don't touch it until I tell you."

"I won't," Ryota promised, though his curiosity twitched. He glanced at the carvings, muttering softly, "What happens if you… just tap one lightly?"

Rio's eyes narrowed. "Don't. Seriously, don't."

But as he stepped a fraction closer, his foot caught on a loose stone in the floor. It rolled forward, striking the corner of the pedestal.

Immediately, the green runes flared. A low hum vibrated through the chamber.

Rio groaned, gripping her saber. "Ryota! I told you—"

Before she could finish, the pedestal's glow exploded into a shower of light, and a small humanoid figure materialized, its eyes blazing with awareness.

"Who enters my domain?" the figure's voice echoed, calm but commanding.

Ryota stumbled backward, bumping into Rio. "I-I didn't mean to! I swear!"

Rio exhaled sharply, steadying herself. "Just… apologize. And don't touch anything else."

The figure tilted its head, scanning them. "Few intruders reach this far. Few leave unchanged."

Ryota whispered, half-panicked, half-awed, "What should we do?"

Rio scanned the room, eyes darting to the shifting runes. "We proceed carefully. Stick close and follow my instructions exactly."

"Yes, Rio," Ryota said, already moving to her side.

As they stepped forward, Ryota's boot hit another loose stone. This one skittered across the floor, striking a rune in the corner. A low rumble shook the chamber, and faint glowing runes along the walls began shifting erratically, some lighting up while others dimmed.

Rio pinched the bridge of her nose. "Ryota… I said don't touch anything. You're going to get us killed before we even meet the guardian."

"I-I didn't mean to!" Ryota stammered. "It just… rolled!"

The small humanoid figure's eyes glimmered like emerald fire. "The dungeon reacts to you… oddly."

Rio sighed. "Of course it does. That's just perfect. You follow instructions perfectly… except when chaos follows you automatically."

Ryota scratched his head nervously. "Maybe… maybe it's my luck? But I'm still listening!"

"Listening doesn't help when the dungeon thinks your shoes are weapons!" Rio muttered, tightening her grip on her saber.

Even though Ryota followed her lead, his accidental kicks and curious glances triggered small rune reactions—lights flickering, floor tiles shifting, a trap door clicking ominously in the far corner. The dungeon was subtly chaotic, alive with Ryota's unintentional meddling.

Rio muttered, more to herself than him, "You're impossible… and somehow this chaos will probably help us survive anyway."

Ryota peeked up at her, sheepish but determined. "I'll try to be careful. I promise."

Rio shook her head, but a faint smile tugged at her lips. "Careful… yes. Just… try not to unleash another apocalypse before we even meet the boss."

The two moved deeper into the dungeon, Ryota trailing and stumbling just enough to keep the chamber alive with unpredictable energy, while Rio led with a wary but amused caution. Chaos, it seemed, was already part of the plan.
