Chapter 8 - Chapter 8 – Homecoming

The sun hung low over the hills as Kael and Lucien walked down the dirt road leading into their village. The small wooden houses, the narrow streets, and the stone well at the center—all of it looked exactly as they remembered.

Kael's grey eyes scanned everything with the same analytical precision he always applied to new environments. But there was something different now. A strange, fleeting sense of peace.

Lucien, walking a few paces ahead, stretched lazily.

"Back home, huh? Looks just like I left it."

Kael said nothing, his mind quietly mapping out the village—street layouts, potential choke points, even where villagers might hide in a crisis. Weak points, strong points… possible threats.

When they reached the fork in the road, they stopped. Kael turned slightly toward Lucien.

"This is where we separate," he said calmly.

Lucien raised an eyebrow, a smirk on his face.

"Ah, so we're going solo for now. Fair enough."

Kael nodded once.

"Do not underestimate this place. I need to assess everything in my own terms."

Lucien chuckled. "And I don't need a guide. I know my home."

With that, they went their separate ways.

Kael arrived at a small cottage at the edge of the village. A garden of herbs and flowers surrounded the front door, and smoke rose gently from the chimney.

From the doorway came a warm voice.

"Kael? Is that you?"

Kael's heart… stirred. In this life, his mother—Amara—was everything he had never had before: kind, gentle, loving. She rushed forward, embracing him tightly.

"My sweet boy! I was so worried!"

Kael allowed the embrace, feeling something strange in his chest. Warmth. A stark contrast to the cruel, abusive mother from his previous life—the one who had beaten, ignored, and abandoned him.

She never cared before… I survived by studying her, learning every weakness, every flicker of temper. And now… she smiles at me.

Amara pulled back slightly, brushing hair from his forehead. "You're home. You're safe. Eat, rest… tell me everything."

Kael nodded, carefully observing every movement, storing everything in memory. Sweet, soft, caring gestures. He let himself quietly note the difference between this life and the one he had lived before.

Meanwhile, Lucien strode confidently down the other fork of the road. His house was larger, sturdier, and more structured than Kael's cottage.

From inside, voices called out.

"Lucien! You're finally back!"

His parents appeared, tall and commanding yet warm, flanked by two older siblings who eyed him with teasing grins.

"Look at you. Growing stronger, I see," said his father, a slight smirk crossing his face.

His older brother leaned forward. "Don't get too cocky. You've still got a lot to learn."

Lucien grinned, accepting the playful challenge. "I know. I've got my own plans."

His sister shook her head, laughing. "Some things never change."

Lucien's mother pressed a hand to his shoulder. "Just promise us you'll be careful, Lucien."

He smiled, reassured by the familiarity of home and family, yet a spark of excitement lit his eyes. Power… and challenge… I can't wait to test myself again.

That night, both Kael and Lucien reflected on the quiet streets of the village, each thinking about the world beyond their homes.

Kael's mind ran through strategies and calculations. Seventy-three stronger than Headmaster Drayke… the world is far larger than this village. I must prepare.

Lucien, meanwhile, felt the thrill of potential. This is just the beginning. Soon, I'll be able to take on anyone.

The sun dipped below the horizon, leaving the village in quiet darkness. For now, the peace was theirs—but both knew it could not last.
