Loreen's POV
The house was empty.
Loreen knew it before he stepped through the door. There was a quality to the silence of an empty building that was different from the silence of a building where people were being quiet, and this was the first kind.
Still and hollow and without the small sounds that people made without knowing they were making them.
He stepped inside anyway.
The main room was bare except for a table and three chairs and a cloth bag pushed against the far wall that someone had left behind or had not had time to take.
A candle on the table had burned down to nothing and left a dark ring on the wood. The curtains on the single window were pulled shut.
Kaid moved past him and went to the far side of the room.
"The fire," Kaid said.
