TL;DR — Magic and affinity tied to personal objects embedded in a persons body.
The Memoir System
In the world, magic is born from memory, identity, and loss; Every magic user carries a Memoir, a personal object embedded somewhere in their body. The object represents a defining memory or truth about who they are. The stronger the memory tied to the object, the stronger the magic it produces.
Because no two lives are the same, no two Memoirs create the same magic.
What a Memoir Is
A Memoir is a physical object fused into a person's body that anchors their magic.
Examples of objects include:
broken coins
rusted keys
rings
fragments of bone
arrowheads
pieces of glass
carved charms
melted metal
It could be literally anything
The object embeds itself in the body during a moment of intense emotional impact.
It might appear in the chest, spine, palm, throat, or even near the heart.
Once embedded, it becomes part of the person permanently.
Removing it almost always kills the host.
How Magic Is Born
A Memoir activates when three things align:
Memory
Identity
Will
The object acts like a focus for those forces.
Magic grows from the meaning the person gives that object.
For example, a blade fragment might represent betrayal to one person and survival to another. The magic created would be completely different. This is why the system is called Memoir, magic is literally shaped by a person's story.
Affinity
Each Memoir develops an Affinity, which is the direction that its power tends to grow toward.
Affinity is not chosen and cannot be changed easily, It develops from a person's nature and experiences.
Affinity does not determine exact powers. It determines the flavor and behavior of magic.
Examples of affinity tendencies might involve:
decay
storms
blood
frost
shadow
reflection
fire
growth
silence
But the exact abilities always manifest differently for each individual.
Two people could both have a decay affinity yet use it in completely different ways.
Awakening
Most people live their entire lives without a Memoir awakening.
The awakening moment happens during extreme emotional pressure.
Examples include:
near death
betrayal
losing someone important
overwhelming fear
victory after hopelessness
discovering a painful truth
When this moment happens, the object fuses into the body and the first spark of magic appears.
This event is called The Binding.
Growth
Memoir magic grows as the user confronts important moments in their life.
Power increases when a person:
confronts their past
overcomes trauma
redefines their identity
makes irreversible choices
The magic evolves alongside the person.
If someone changes deeply, their magic can change with them.
This means character growth and magic growth are connected.
Corruption
Memoirs can become distorted if the person loses themselves.
If someone betrays their own core identity, the object may fracture or mutate.
When this happens, the magic becomes unstable.
Users may lose control of their abilities or slowly damage their own body.
Some eventually become monsters known as Broken Memoirs.
