Chapter 6 - Chapter 6 — The Road Beyond Ember Hollow

The night slowly grew quiet again.

Smoke drifted lazily through the village square as the last embers of battle faded into darkness. The massive body of the Stonefire Behemoth lay sprawled across the ground like a fallen mountain, its once-glowing cracks now dull and lifeless.

Villagers gathered cautiously around the square.

Some stared at the enormous creature with disbelief.

Others looked at Kael.

Not with fear anymore.

But with awe.

Kael rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly.

"…Everyone's staring again."

Mira crossed her arms beside him.

"Well yeah," she said. "You just helped kill a monster the size of a house."

Kael glanced at the massive corpse again.

"…When you say it like that, it sounds impressive."

Valen Drax stepped closer, his long coat shifting softly in the night breeze.

His golden eyes moved from the fallen beast to Kael's glowing hand.

"You felt it, didn't you?" he asked calmly.

Kael blinked.

"Felt what?"

"The Fire Leaf growing stronger."

Kael hesitated.

Then he nodded slowly.

"…Yeah."

It was true.

Something inside him had changed during the fight.

The fire within his chest felt warmer now.

More stable.

Like a steady flame instead of a raging wildfire.

Valen nodded slightly.

"Combat accelerates the bond between a bearer and their leaf."

Mira raised an eyebrow.

"So fighting monsters makes him stronger?"

Valen glanced at her.

"In a sense."

Kael sighed.

"Great. So now my life involves more giant flaming monsters."

Valen didn't deny it.

"That is likely."

Kael groaned.

"Fantastic."

Nearby, Old Bran slowly approached.

The elder leaned on his wooden staff as he studied the fallen creature.

"In all my years," he said quietly, "I never imagined something like this would happen here."

His gaze shifted toward Kael.

"You've changed the fate of this village tonight."

Kael scratched his head.

"I mostly just tried not to die."

Bran smiled faintly.

"Even so."

He looked around the damaged square.

"The world has a way of pulling powerful people away from quiet places."

Kael understood what he meant.

This was goodbye.

Not today.

But soon.

Mira seemed to realize it too.

She looked away, staring at the distant forest.

Valen's warriors had already begun preparing their horses.

Some were examining the Stonefire Behemoth's body, carving out glowing fragments of stone from its armor.

Kael pointed at them.

"…Uh, what are they doing?"

Valen glanced over.

"Harvesting materials."

"For what?"

"The creature's armor contains condensed fire essence."

Kael blinked.

"That sounds valuable."

Valen nodded.

"It is."

Mira smirked slightly.

"So the monster tried to destroy our village and now you're looting it."

Valen shrugged calmly.

"Efficiency is important."

Kael laughed quietly.

"Okay, I like this guy."

Mira rolled her eyes.

A moment later, one of Valen's warriors approached and bowed slightly.

"Commander."

"Yes?"

"The area has been secured."

Valen nodded.

"Good."

The warrior glanced briefly at Kael before speaking again.

"The scouts also reported something unusual."

Valen's expression sharpened.

"Speak."

"The pillar of fire earlier…"

The warrior hesitated.

"It was seen from very far away."

Kael winced.

"…How far?"

"Several hundred miles at least."

Mira blinked.

"That's… not good."

Valen sighed softly.

"No."

His eyes moved toward the distant mountains.

"It means other hunters will soon begin searching."

Kael frowned.

"Hunters like you?"

Valen shook his head.

"Not all organizations are as… disciplined as the Crimson Ash Order."

"That doesn't sound reassuring."

"It should not be."

Kael sighed again.

"Okay yeah, I'm definitely leaving now."

Mira looked at him.

"You're still thinking about that?"

Kael pointed around the village.

"Look at this place."

Burned ground.

Broken stalls.

The giant monster corpse.

"If I stay, worse things will come."

Mira didn't argue.

Because she knew he was right.

Old Bran nodded slowly.

"The boy understands."

Kael looked at the elder.

"I guess the quiet life is over."

Bran chuckled softly.

"For now."

He placed a hand on Kael's shoulder.

"But Ember Hollow will always be your home."

Kael smiled.

"Thanks."

Meanwhile, Mira was staring at Valen.

Her expression looked… determined.

Valen noticed immediately.

"You have something to say," he said calmly.

Mira stepped forward.

"I'm going with him."

Kael blinked again.

"…You're serious?"

"Of course I'm serious."

She pointed at him.

"You can barely control your power."

"Hey!"

"And you nearly burned the village down twice today."

"That was mostly an accident!"

Mira turned back to Valen.

"So someone responsible needs to keep an eye on him."

Valen studied her carefully.

"You understand what this journey will involve."

"Danger."

"More than that."

Valen's voice grew slightly colder.

"War."

Mira didn't flinch.

"I grew up on the edge of a monster forest."

She gestured toward the fallen Stonefire Behemoth.

"I think I'll manage."

Valen remained silent for several seconds.

Kael whispered,

"…Is he going to say no?"

Valen finally spoke.

"You may accompany us."

Kael blinked.

"That was easier than expected."

Valen raised a finger.

"But only if you can keep up."

Mira smirked.

"Deal."

Kael sighed dramatically.

"Well… there goes my peaceful training trip."

Mira punched his arm lightly.

"You're welcome."

Nearby, the Crimson Ash warriors finished preparing their horses.

The night air had grown colder now.

Clouds drifted slowly across the moon.

Valen walked toward his horse and mounted smoothly.

His warriors did the same.

Kael looked around the village one last time.

The place felt smaller somehow.

Quieter.

Like a chapter of his life had already begun closing.

Mira nudged him.

"You ready?"

Kael hesitated.

Then nodded.

"…Yeah."

Old Bran stepped forward again.

"Wait."

He reached into his cloak and pulled out a small object wrapped in cloth.

"Take this."

Kael accepted it carefully.

Inside the cloth was a small metal pendant shaped like a leaf.

But not a normal leaf.

The metal was dark red, almost like cooled lava.

Kael frowned.

"What is it?"

Bran's eyes held a mysterious glint.

"Something I hoped I would never need to give away."

Kael looked confused.

"But it belongs with you now."

Mira leaned closer.

"…Is that another Fire Leaf?"

Bran shook his head.

"No."

His voice lowered slightly.

"But it was made from the same ancient tree."

Kael's eyes widened.

"…Wait what?"

Bran smiled faintly.

"Every Fire Leaf bearer once carried one of these."

Kael stared at the pendant.

"What does it do?"

Bran chuckled.

"That…"

He turned away slowly.

"You will discover on your journey."

Kael sighed.

"Everyone keeps doing that."

Mira laughed quietly.

Valen called out from his horse.

"We leave now."

Kael looked at the road leading away from Ember Hollow.

The dark path stretched beyond the village and disappeared into the distant forest.

Adventure.

Danger.

Unknown lands.

Probably more giant monsters.

He took a deep breath.

Then climbed onto one of the spare horses beside Mira.

"Well," he said nervously.

"This should be interesting."

Mira grinned.

"Try not to burn anything for at least an hour."

"No promises."

Valen turned his horse toward the road.

"Move out."

The Crimson Ash Order began riding into the night.

Hooves echoed softly against the dirt road as the group left Ember Hollow behind.

Kael looked back once more.

The village lanterns glowed softly in the distance.

Then the forest swallowed them.

Ahead lay the wider world.

And somewhere within that world…

Other ancient leaves were waiting to awaken.

Far away, high within a stone fortress hidden among the mountains, a robed figure stood before a burning crystal.

The crystal flickered violently.

The figure whispered in a cold voice.

"…A Fire Leaf has returned."

Behind him, shadows shifted.

"Send the hunters."

The hunt had already begun.
