Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: Eyes That Saw Through Me

Aurelia's head throbbed as she struggled to catch her breath. The forest seemed to spin around her. The sounds of snarling, crashing paws, and snapping branches faded only slightly as her body slowly recovered from the chaos of the attack.

She glanced at the man. He stood a few steps ahead, his golden eyes scanning the dark tree line, muscles tense and ready for the next threat. His presence was overwhelming, impossible to ignore, yet there was something in his gaze that made her skin crawl. Something more than danger. Something personal.

"Are you hurt?" His voice was calm, but every word carried authority.

"I… I think I'm fine," she stammered. Her knees threatened to buckle, but she forced herself upright. "I just… I don't understand what is happening."

He turned fully to face her, his shadow falling over her as the moonlight revealed every sharp angle of his face. "You will understand soon enough," he said, his eyes narrowing. "And you will accept it whether you like it or not."

Aurelia swallowed hard. Her heart raced, part fear and part something else she could not name. His words sounded like a command, but the pull she felt in her chest was undeniable. She wanted to reject him. She wanted to run. Yet she felt anchored in place, caught by the intensity of his gaze.

"Why me?" she asked, her voice trembling. "Why now?"

"You are my mate," he said, the words rolling off his tongue as if stating an obvious fact. "It has always been this way."

Aurelia shook her head. "That is impossible. I do not even know what that means."

His eyes softened, just for a moment. Then they hardened again. "It means you belong to me. And I will protect you. Every second of your life. No matter the cost."

Before Aurelia could respond, a rustle in the trees caught her attention. She turned, expecting to see more wolves, but the shadows shifted in a strange pattern. Something darker than the rest moved toward them.

The man's body tensed instantly. He crouched slightly, muscles coiled like a predator ready to strike. Aurelia could sense the danger radiating off him. Her stomach twisted with fear, but also an odd thrill.

"Another one?" she asked, her voice barely audible.

"Yes. And it is not alone." His eyes flicked to her, sharp and warning. "We need to move."

He grabbed her hand without asking, his grip firm and commanding. Aurelia tried to pull back, but his strength was undeniable. He pulled her into the shadows of a nearby rock formation, pressing her low against the ground.

From her hiding spot, she watched the dark figure emerge. It was taller than any wolf she had ever seen. Its fur shimmered black in the moonlight, and its eyes glowed red, dripping with a hunger that made Aurelia's blood run cold.

The creature's gaze locked onto her. It snarled, the sound deep and guttural, shaking the very ground beneath them.

"You are mine," the man growled, stepping in front of her. "Do not touch her."

The red-eyed wolf hesitated for a moment, then leapt forward. The man moved with impossible speed, intercepting the creature in a blur of motion. A clash of strength and power echoed through the clearing as the two collided.

Aurelia's heart raced. She had never seen anything like this in her life. The way he moved, the way he struck, it was as if he could anticipate every attack before it happened. His golden eyes never left her, even as he fought for their lives.

The red-eyed wolf snarled, snapping at him with teeth that could tear through bone. The man dodged effortlessly, then countered, sending the wolf sprawling into the ground. But it did not stay down. Its eyes blazed brighter, and it rose, shaking off the attack with unnatural resilience.

Aurelia backed against the rock, feeling helpless. She wanted to scream, but the sounds of the fight drowned out her voice. She had never felt so small, so insignificant, and yet so strangely drawn to the man who fought with lethal precision.

The fight continued for what felt like minutes, though in reality it could have been seconds. The man's movements were fluid, almost unnatural. He struck again and again, forcing the creature back step by step. Finally, with a roar that echoed through the forest, he sent the wolf crashing into a tree.

The red eyes glared at him, then vanished into the shadows. Aurelia exhaled shakily.

"You cannot stay here," the man said, turning his attention to her. His expression was intense, commanding. "We must move before the rest of the pack returns."

Aurelia nodded, her mind still reeling. She allowed him to take her hand again. The warmth of his grip sent a shiver through her, something that had nothing to do with fear.

"Where are we going?" she asked.

"Somewhere safe," he replied, his eyes scanning the darkness. "For now."

They ran through the forest, faster than Aurelia thought possible. Every sound, every shadow made her flinch, but he never faltered. He pulled her over roots and rocks, leapt across streams, and navigated the forest with ease.

Finally, they reached a clearing. The moonlight revealed an old stone structure hidden among the trees. Walls covered in vines and moss, it looked abandoned, yet somehow safe.

The man led her inside. The air was cooler, still, and quiet. Aurelia pressed herself against the wall, trying to calm her racing heart.

He turned to her, face illuminated by the faint moonlight streaming through the cracked roof. "Do you understand now?" he asked. His golden eyes bore into hers. "The danger is not over. It never is. But you are safe for tonight."

Aurelia shook her head. "No. I don't understand anything. How am I your… mate? What does that even mean?"

He stepped closer, the warmth of his presence surrounding her. "It means that we are connected in a way that cannot be broken. The pack will recognize it. Others will try to take you. And you will need me if you are to survive."

Aurelia's stomach churned. She wanted to run, to scream, to escape, but the pull of his gaze kept her rooted in place. There was something in him that was terrifying and irresistible all at once.

She could feel it in her chest. The bond. A strange warmth, a tether she could not explain.

Before she could speak, the sound of branches snapping outside made them both freeze.

The man's expression darkened. "They are coming back," he said quietly.

Aurelia's pulse skyrocketed. "How many?" she asked, panic rising again.

"More than before. And stronger." His voice was calm, but there was a warning in it that made her skin crawl.

Her hands shook. "What do we do?"

He took a step toward her, his eyes glinting with intensity. "We fight. And you stay close. Do exactly as I say, and you might survive."

Aurelia's heart pounded in her chest. She wanted to protest, to run, to hide somewhere she could be safe, but she knew it was useless. The forest had already become a battlefield, and she was at the center of it.

The first howl came from the treeline. Then another. The pack was returning, and this time, there was no time to hesitate.

The man grabbed her hand once more. "Hold on to me. Do not let go."

Aurelia did not ask why. She simply obeyed, holding on tight as he stepped into the moonlight, facing the shadows that were moving closer.

The golden eyes that had claimed her were now filled with deadly focus.

The night was far from over.

And Aurelia had no idea if she would make it through.
