Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 – The Girl Who Listens to the Wind

The evening wind always arrived before the sunset.

It moved through the quiet streets like it knew the town very well. It brushed the trees, rattled old signboards, and carried the smell of tea and dust from the small shops near the main road.

Luna liked that wind.

She always said it sounded like the world whispering.

Right now she was sitting on the grass in the small park near her house, holding a camera in both hands. Her knees were pulled close to her chest while she adjusted the lens.

Click.

The camera captured the sky.

Soft orange light stretched across the clouds. The sun was slowly disappearing behind distant buildings.

Luna lowered the camera and looked at the picture on the screen.

"Nice," she murmured quietly.

Luna was sixteen. She had long dark hair that fell down her back in loose waves, sometimes messy because she rarely tied it properly. Her eyes were calm grey, the kind that always looked like they were watching something people usually missed.

She wore a white oversized hoodie and loose black jeans. A small camera hung around her neck with a worn black strap.

The park around her was peaceful.

A dog barked happily near the walking path. Two old men argued about the Tennis scores near the tea stall. Children ran across the grass chasing a football.

Luna lifted her camera again.

Click.

This time the picture showed the old wooden bench near the middle of the park.

It was nothing special.

Faded paint.

A small crack along the backrest.

One leg slightly shorter than the others so it tilted a little when someone sat on the edge.

Yet Luna had taken many photos of that bench.

More than thirty.

Footsteps approached from behind.

A familiar voice called out loudly.

"Luna! You are here again!"

She turned her head.

Kai jogged toward her across the grass.

Kai looked like a storm of energy compared to Luna's quiet calm. His black hair stuck out in every direction like he had just woken up five minutes ago. His school jacket hung loosely over a grey t-shirt, and his backpack bounced on one shoulder as he ran.

He stopped in front of her and bent forward slightly.

"You seriously skipped club again," he said between breaths.

Luna tilted her head.

"I did not skip."

"You disappeared." he said.

"That is different." she replied.

Kai dropped his bag beside the bench and sat down heavily.

"You always come here."

"It is peaceful." she said.

Kai looked around the park.

"Peaceful? There are children screaming and some old hags are arguing about Tennis!"

"That is background noise." she said calmly.

Kai stared at her.

"You say weird things."

Luna smiled faintly.

She stood up and walked toward the bench again, raising her camera.

Click.

Another photo.

Kai leaned back against the bench and watched her.

"You know what I think?" he said.

"What?"

"I think you secretly believe something magical will happen here." he said.

Luna lowered the camera.

"Maybe."

Kai groaned loudly.

"Oh no. Not this again."

"What?" she asked.

"You always talk about wind whispers and quiet places and hidden meanings." he said, lowering his voice word-after-word.

"The world is full of hidden meanings." she said proudly.

Kai pointed at the bench.

"That is a bench."

"It is a peaceful bench." she corrected.

"It's a piece of wood!!" Kai shouted.

Luna laughed softly.

The wind moved through the park again, brushing through the tree leaves above them.

For a brief moment Luna looked up.

Sometimes the wind carried strange sounds.

Not loud.

Just soft whispers.

Almost like voices.

But right now it only sounded like rustling leaves.

Kai noticed her looking up.

"You heard something again, did you?" he asked.

"Maybe." she replied.

"You always say maybe." he said.

"Because sometimes it is true." she said.

Kai leaned forward with his elbows on his knees.

"Last week you chased wind chimes for an hour."

"They sounded nice."

"They were on someone's balcony!!" Kai shouted.

"They still sounded nice." she replied.

Kai shook his head slowly.

"You are impossible!"

Luna sat down on the bench beside him.

The wood creaked slightly.

The sun was almost gone now. The sky had turned deeper orange, slowly fading into purple near the horizon.

Streetlights flickered on along the park path.

Kai stretched his arms behind his head.

"So," he said. "Extra classes tomorrow?"

Luna nodded.

"Yeah."

"Math?" he questioned.

"Unfortunately." she said calmly.

Kai sighed dramatically.

"School is suffering."

Luna smiled again.

For a moment they both sat quietly, watching the park as evening settled around them.

Children were leaving with their parents. The tea stall owner started stacking empty cups. The sound of the football game slowly faded.

The wind passed through the park once more.

Luna glanced at the bench beneath her hand.

Something about it always felt strange.

Not scary.

Just... familiar.

Like the bench had stories it was not telling.

Kai stood up and picked up his bag.

"My mom will yell if I get home late again," he said.

Luna stood too.

"See you tomorrow."

Kai walked backward toward the park exit.

"Try not to talk to benches while I am gone."

"No promises." she shouted with a little laugh.

Kai laughed and waved before turning down the street toward his house.

Luna stayed behind for another minute.

The park was almost empty now.

She lifted her camera again.

Click.

The bench appeared on the screen once more.

For some reason she felt like this picture mattered.

She could not explain why.

After a moment she turned and started walking home.

Behind her, the evening wind moved quietly through the trees.

And the old bench sat silently in the fading light.

Waiting...for something.
