The blue light in Kai's vision flickered violently.
Numbers spun like a broken slot machine across his retina.
For one blinding second, the display screamed:
LEVEL 1486
Credits poured across the screen.
$12,000
The numbers flashed so fast they hurt to look at.
Then the System emitted a low humming tone—like a machine clearing its throat.
The display shuddered.
Everything collapsed.
[SYSTEM ERROR: PHANTOM DATA DETECTED]
[RECALIBRATING TO CURRENT BIOMETRICS...]
The numbers plummeted.
[LEVEL 2 REACHED]
[XP: 300]
[CURRENT BALANCE: $12,000]
[SKILL POINTS: 4]
Kai blinked as the numbers stabilized. "The System pulled data from the museum servers," he said slowly. "That ten thousand credits... it's a glitch. A phantom data spike."
Nyx's eyes sparked. She slapped the side of the Switchblade sitting on the lift. "Glitch or not, we're spending it. We can finally fix that cooling rack. If we replace the grid, your turbine won't cook itself every time you trigger the Overdrive."
"Do it," Kai said, looking at the scarred armor of his machine. It wasn't pretty, but it was his.
They were inside The Viper's Nest, Nyx's cramped underground workshop buried deep in the Ruined Districts. Switchblade parts hung from the ceiling like metallic vines, and half-finished turbines covered every surface.
The air smelled faintly of burnt coolant and machine oil, and somewhere behind the walls a pump thudded rhythmically, pushing canal water out of the workshop's drainage system.
One of the holographic screens was playing the same clip on a loop.
The museum footage.
A grey-and-black Switchblade bursting through glass.
A perfect front flip over the holographic globe.
The broadcast headline read:
MUSEUM GHOST STRIKES AGAIN
Nyx rubbed her temple.
"The Peacekeepers have bumped the entire Ruined District to Code Yellow," she said.
"They're scanning every canal for a Switchblade with your Overdrive signature."
Kai studied the screen quietly.
"They're looking for a ghost," he said.
Nyx crossed her arms.
"They're looking for you."
Kai flexed his fingers. The adrenaline from the museum run still buzzed in his veins like electricity.
Then he glanced back at the System display.
"Good," he said.
Nyx raised an eyebrow.
"Good?"
Kai smirked faintly.
"Then we give them a reason to look somewhere else."
Nyx rolled her eyes, but a grin tugged at her lips.
"Before you go starting another war," she said, grabbing her jacket, "you're eating something."
A Moment of Humanity — The Gills
The restaurant sat inside the skeleton of a sunken shopping mall.
Only one dry pocket remained above the flooded levels.
The locals called it The Gills.
Neon lanterns hung from rusted beams, casting green and purple light across cracked tile floors. Water dripped steadily somewhere in the darkness, echoing through the empty corridors.
Kai sat across from Nyx at a small metal table.
Two bowls of synthetic noodles steamed between them.
Kai's leg bounced uncontrollably beneath the table.
The hum was still there.
The racing lines.
Every time he blinked, he saw them.
Nyx watched him carefully.
Then she reached across the table and placed her grease-stained fingers over his shaking hand.
"Kai."
Her voice was soft.
Grounding.
"Breathe."
He looked up.
"You're not on the Switchblade right now," she said. "You're just you."
Kai stared at her hand.
Then at her face.
"I don't know who 'just me' is anymore," he admitted quietly. "Every time I close my eyes, I see the track."
Nyx smiled faintly.
"Then keep them open."
She nudged the noodle bowl toward him.
"I didn't drag you out of the shadows just to watch you turn into a machine."
Kai exhaled slowly.
For the first time that night, the tension in his shoulders loosened.
He took a bite.
Nyx leaned back, satisfied.
"Eat your noodles, Champ."
Kai snorted.
"That's an order."
For a moment, just a moment, he laughed.
A real laugh.
But the peace didn't last long.
A red spotlight swept across the cracked window beside them.
Both of them froze.
Outside, a Peacekeeper drone glided silently past the canal entrance, its scanning beam sliding across the ruined mall.
Nyx stood immediately.
"Dinner's over."
Kai grabbed his jacket.
The hunt had already started.
Draven
Far above the flooded ruins, the Upper City glittered like a crown of glass and gold.
Inside the top floor of Apex Tower, Draven Slate stood alone in his penthouse.
The room was silent except for the faint sound of a video looping.
Over.
And over.
And over again.
The museum footage.
But Draven wasn't watching the explosion.
He wasn't watching the escape.
He was watching the rider.
Specifically,
The moment before the front flip.
The exact angle the Switchblade tilted.
The timing of the handlebars.
His grip tightened around the crystal glass in his hand.
A faint crack formed along the rim.
"…Rivers."
The name came out like poison.
"You're supposed to be rotting in the Cooler."
"I made sure of that."
He paused the footage.
Zoomed in.
The maneuver was unmistakable.
Kai Rivers' signature racing style.
Draven tapped a button on the desk.
A secure channel opened instantly.
"Commander."
The Peacekeeper voice answered immediately.
"Yes, sir."
Draven stared out at the glowing city skyline.
"That Ghost in the ruins?" he said calmly.
"He's not a scavenger."
A long pause.
"He's a remnant."
Draven's voice turned cold.
"Burn the sector."
Another pause.
"I want that Switchblade at the bottom of the canal before sunrise."
The Third Trial
VECTOR was already waiting at the edge of Fountain Park.
Its orange-and-white chassis glowed in the fading twilight.
Its optic pulsed rapidly when Kai approached.
"The Peacekeeper net is tightening," VECTOR said.
"This will be your final trial before the grid goes dark."
Kai mounted the Switchblade.
The turbine hummed smoothly beneath him.
The Level 2 synchronization made the controls feel sharper, more responsive.
Nyx watched from the dock.
"Try not to destroy anything," she called.
Kai smirked.
"No promises."
Vector projected the race interface.
[EVENT: DOWNTOWN SLALOM]
[INSTRUCTION: LEFT OF BLUE GATES]
[RIGHT OF ORANGE GATES]
The starting lights appeared.
Three.
Two.
One.
Green.
The Switchblade exploded forward.
This wasn't a race against opponents.
It was a race against the track.
Kai cut hard left around the first blue buoy.
Then snapped right through an orange gate.
Left.
Right.
Left.
The rear fin clipped a buoy. The impact rattled the handlebars and sent a spray of water across the console.
"Penalty if you miss the next gate!" VECTOR warned.
Kai corrected instantly.
The G-force tried to throw him off the seat, but the Fluid Motion skill softened the force, making the world feel like it moved through thick honey.
A ramp rose ahead.
Kai launched.
Mid-air, he twisted the Switchblade into a Tabletop, flattening it to cut through wind resistance.
He landed cleanly and accelerated.
Another ramp.
This one steeper.
Kai pulled the handlebars.
The Switchblade rotated backward.
The world flipped.
Sky.
Water.
Concrete.
Sky again.
Backflip.
He landed with a thunderous splash.
The Overdrive meter instantly filled.
100%.
The final gate appeared ahead.
Locked.
"Kai, I'm at the gate!" Nyx shouted over the comms.
The interface flashed.
[CRITICAL: HACKING...]
Sirens echoed through the canal.
Peacekeeper patrol boats burst into view behind him.
[HACKING: 100%]
[GATE OPEN]
Kai rocketed through.
The System chimed.
[RESULT: 1ST PLACE]
[TIME: 1:58.14]
[PENALTIES: 0]
The reward screen appeared.
[REWARD: $1,000]
[SKILL POINT AWARDED: 1]
[XP GAINED]
[PROGRESS TO E-CLASS: 60%]
Kai slowed the Switchblade just enough to glance at the display.
Then he saw the reflections.
Red lights flashing across the marble canal walls.
Three Peacekeeper patrol boats cutting through the water behind him.
Nyx's voice exploded through the comms.
"Kai, we have company!"
Kai revved the engine.
"Extraction point, Nyx. Go!"
She hesitated.
"Kai,"
"Go."
He glanced at the new Skill Point glowing in his System interface.
Then he looked at the approaching patrol boats.
His lips curled into a dangerous smile.
He wasn't just a ghost anymore.
He was a target.
And targets had to be fast.
Kai's thumb hovered over the flickering menu. If he was going to survive a Code Yellow intercept, he needed to be more than fast.
[NEW SKILL DETECTED: PHANTOM DRIFT]
[Cost: 1 Skill Point]
[Description: Briefly desynchronize your energy signature to bypass active scans.]
Kai didn't hesitate. He tapped the icon.
"Let's see if they can catch what they can't see," he whispered.
The Switchblade's turbine roared, and the night swallowed him whole.
Kai slammed the throttle forward.
The Switchblade roared into the night.
