Chapter 5 - First Challenge

The next morning, I woke up with my muscles screaming. My hands were still blistered, my arms stiff, and my chest tight from yesterday's training. But I couldn't stop thinking about the spark. Mine. Alive. Tiny, messy, but mine.

I dressed quickly and headed to the training yard. The sun hadn't fully risen yet, and the shadows stretched across the dirt. Every step made my stomach twist, but I forced myself forward. Today wasn't just practice. Today… was a test.

The teacher, a tall woman with piercing eyes, was already waiting. Her gaze scanned the yard and landed on me. My chest tightened. She didn't smile. Teachers never smiled at me.

"Kai," she said, voice cold and sharp. "Today's exercise isn't optional. You will face another student in a duel. Control your magic, or you fail. Simple."

I froze. My heart hammered. A duel? Me? My spark was small, barely under control. How could I survive a real fight?

The teacher clapped her hands. "Kai, step forward."

My legs felt heavy, leaden. My hands shook. The spark flickered, weak and erratic. I swallowed. I can do this. I have to.

From the crowd of students, the bully from the first duel stepped forward. His smirk was sharper, crueler. "Finally," he sneered. "Ready to embarrass yourself again?"

I clenched my fists. My palms glowed faintly. Sparks danced. My chest burned with fear and anger. Weakness is not the end. Weakness is the start.

The teacher waved her hand. "Begin."

He charged at me, fast and confident. My first instinct was to dodge, but then I remembered the spark. Tiny, messy, flickering. Mine.

I flung my hands forward. A spark jumped, arcing toward him. It hit his shoulder. He yelped, stumbling. His eyes widened. Surprise. Fear. Anger.

I felt my chest tighten. My legs shook. The spark jumped again, brighter this time, wrapping around his arm. He cursed, backing away.

The system whispered:

[Level Up Available: 3 Points]

I spent them without thinking. My spark pulsed stronger, warmer. My palms tingled with power I hadn't felt before. Not enough to kill, not enough to dominate, but enough to survive.

He charged again. I ducked, rolling, sparks scattering across the dirt. My heart raced. Sweat stung my eyes. My chest burned. Fear clawed at me. I could fail. I could lose. But I couldn't.

The spark pulsed. My anger, my humiliation, everything I had felt—the laughter, the whispers, the pushes, the shame—fueled it. Flames danced along my fingers, brighter, sharper, alive.

He tried to strike me again, but I raised my hands. Sparks leapt, wrapping around his feet, tripping him. He fell hard, cursing, eyes wide with disbelief.

The yard was silent. Other students stared, whispering. The teachers watched. I could feel their eyes on me, weighing me, judging me. My chest heaved. I could barely breathe. My hands glowed faintly, still trembling.

The teacher stepped forward. "Enough." She looked at me. Piercing, cold, calculating. Then… something like respect flickered in her eyes. "You… survived."

I sank to my knees, chest heaving, hands trembling, sparks flickering faintly. Alive. Messy. Raw.

The bully scrambled to his feet, glaring, muttering under his breath. He didn't touch me again. Not today.

I looked around the yard. My classmates stared. Some with shock, some fear, some curiosity. I didn't care. I felt… alive. Powerful. Mine.

The system whispered:

[Survival Spark – Level 3]

[Stat Points Available: 5]

I gritted my teeth. My palms tingled. My chest burned. My body ached. But for the first time… I felt ready. I wasn't the weak kid anymore.

Tomorrow, I'll train harder. Control better. Fight smarter. And the next time someone underestimates me… they'll regret it.

I whispered to myself, voice shaky but full of fire:

"I'll show them. I'll get stronger. I'm not weak anymore."

The shadows lengthened as the sun set. I sat against a tree, chest heaving, sweat dripping, hands glowing faintly. My body screamed in pain, but my mind burned with determination.

I'm Kai.

The weak kid? Not for long.

Tomorrow… they'll see.

Tomorrow… I'll show them.
