Chapter 75 - CH 75 - Rebuilding

Naruto discovered something horrible the morning after the funeral.

Resting was boring.

Not regular boring.

Not Academy-history-lecture boring.

This was advanced boredom.

Possibly forbidden boredom.

He'd slept.

He'd eaten.

He'd slept again.

He'd reorganized his ninja tools.

He'd stared at his new Gunbai for twenty minutes.

He'd considered wearing the Uzumaki Death Seal Mask.

Then remembered the words UNWANTED SPIRITUAL ATTENTION and decided he wasn't that bored.

By noon—

Naruto couldn't take it anymore.

"I'm going outside."

The hospital nurse looked up.

"No."

"I'm a chūnin."

"Congratulations."

"I helped save the village."

"Very impressive."

"I fought a Bijū."

"I've read your chart."

Naruto pointed toward the window.

"Konoha needs me."

The nurse folded her arms.

"Konoha needs your ribs to remain inside your body."

Naruto looked down.

Fair.

"Can I walk?"

"Yes."

"Outside?"

"Yes."

"Can I help people?"

"Light activity."

Naruto grinned.

The nurse immediately regretted her wording.

"Define light."

Naruto was already gone.

Konoha looked different in daylight.

Not destroyed.

Naruto refused to call it that.

Damaged.

There was a difference.

Entire sections of the village were already moving again. Construction crews filled the streets. Shinobi carried lumber while Earth Release users stabilized damaged foundations.

Civilians cleared shattered glass.

Academy instructors organized volunteers.

Genin ran messages and supplies.

The invasion had ended.

The work hadn't.

Naruto shoved his hands into his pockets.

For once—

He didn't make ten clones and throw himself into the middle of everything.

He wanted to.

His body disagreed.

Apparently fighting Shukaku, channeling an unreasonable amount of Nine-Tails chakra, getting thrown through the forest, and nearly dying several different ways had consequences.

Stupid consequences.

So Naruto walked.

His first stop was Ichiraku.

Naturally.

Naruto nearly cried when he saw the stand still standing.

"OLD MAN!"

Teuchi looked up.

"Naruto!"

Naruto pointed at the building.

"YOU SURVIVED!"

Teuchi stared at him.

"...Yes?"

"The ramen survived!"

Ayame leaned around him.

"Nice to see your priorities haven't changed."

Naruto immediately sat.

"Victory ramen."

"You're supposed to be recovering."

"Recovery ramen."

"Naruto."

"Medical ramen."

Ayame sighed.

Teuchi laughed.

Then Naruto noticed the stack of broken boards behind the shop.

One side of the awning had been damaged.

The rear storage area was worse.

Naruto looked at it.

Then at Teuchi.

"Need help?"

Teuchi waved him off.

"You've done enough."

PING!

Naruto's eye twitched.

SIDE QUEST RECEIVED

Ramen Reconstruction

Objective: Assist Ichiraku with minor invasion repairs without aggravating existing injuries.

Bonus Objective: Do NOT use more than 3 Shadow Clones.

Reward:

+1 Endurance

+15 SP

Naruto stared.

Three clones.

The System knew him too well.

"Fine."

Three Narutos appeared.

No more.

One held boards.

One passed nails.

One climbed onto the roof until Ayame yelled at him to get down because apparently minor repairs didn't include falling through another building.

Naruto mostly listened.

For once—

That was enough.

He visited Choji afterward.

The Akimichi district had taken damage near its outer edge.

Nothing catastrophic.

Mostly roofs.

Windows.

One damaged storehouse.

Choji was carrying enough lumber to construct a small house.

Naruto stared.

"Need help?"

Choji looked at the lumber.

Then Naruto.

"...Can you carry lunch?"

Naruto looked offended.

"I can carry wood."

"You're limping."

Naruto looked down.

Traitorous leg.

"Fine."

PING!

SIDE QUEST RECEIVED

Supply Run

Deliver meals and water to reconstruction teams.

Reward:

+10 SP

Naruto stared at the screen.

"...I've defeated a Bijū."

Choji nodded.

"That's cool."

He handed Naruto four lunch bags.

"These go to Team Three."

Naruto accepted them.

"This feels disrespectful."

"Don't eat them."

"Now you're just insulting me."

Hinata was helping Hyūga shinobi search damaged buildings before repair crews entered.

Shino's insects were locating unstable pockets beneath rubble.

Kiba and Akamaru were finding damaged gas lines, missing animals, and people who had lost belongings during the attack.

Naruto helped all three.

Small things.

Carry this.

Find that.

Move those.

Check on someone.

Every few hours—

PING!

Another tiny quest.

+5 SP

+1 Charisma

Minor Skill Experience

Nothing incredible.

Nothing Legendary.

No hidden bloodline.

No destiny-altering reward.

Just—

Helping.

Naruto found that he didn't mind.

By sunset, Sakura found him carrying roofing tiles.

She stared.

Naruto stared back.

"Hi."

"What are you doing?"

"Resting."

Sakura looked at the tiles.

Then at Naruto.

Then at the tiles.

"Put those down."

"They're light."

"Naruto."

"I'm a chūnin."

"Put."

Naruto sighed.

"Everybody keeps using that tone."

"Down."

He put them down.

Sakura grabbed his wrist.

"Hospital."

"What?!"

"You've been outside all day."

"I've been taking it easy!"

"You have reopened two wounds."

Naruto looked down.

"...Oh."

Sakura's eye twitched.

"Hospital."

Naruto allowed himself to be dragged away.

Mostly because Sakura's fist looked medically persuasive.

While Naruto learned the difficult art of doing less—

Konoha faced a considerably larger problem.

The Hokage's office was empty.

And everyone had noticed.

The council chamber had survived the invasion.

Barely.

One wall was cracked.

Two windows remained boarded.

The long table had been repaired.

Around it sat some of the most powerful people in Konoha.

Shikaku Nara.

Inoichi Yamanaka.

Choza Akimichi.

Hiashi Hyūga.

Representatives of the Aburame and Inuzuka.

Senior jōnin.

Homura Mitokado.

Koharu Utatane.

Jiraiya sat at the far end.

He looked profoundly unhappy to be there.

And opposite him—

Danzo Shimura sat perfectly still.

Hiruzen's seat remained empty.

Nobody had dared occupy it.

That was the problem.

Koharu broke the silence.

"Konoha cannot remain without a Hokage."

Nobody disagreed.

"We've survived the immediate crisis," Shikaku said. "That doesn't mean the crisis is over."

"The Sand will have questions," Inoichi added.

"So will the daimyō," Homura said.

"And our enemies," Hiashi finished.

That was the real concern.

A hidden village without a Kage was wounded prey.

Everyone at the table knew it.

Danzo finally spoke.

"Then the solution is obvious."

Jiraiya's eyes shifted toward him.

Danzo continued.

"A Fifth Hokage must be selected immediately."

Nobody moved.

Danzo's voice remained calm.

"The invasion exposed weaknesses that have existed for years."

Koharu's expression hardened.

"This is not the time to criticize Hiruzen."

"I am not criticizing him."

Danzo paused.

"I am acknowledging reality."

Jiraiya's expression darkened.

Danzo didn't look at him.

"My old teammate devoted his life to this village."

For the first time—

Something almost human entered his voice.

Almost.

"Hiruzen carried burdens few understood."

His hand tightened slightly around his cane.

"And now he is dead."

Silence.

Danzo let it sit.

Then—

"We honor him by ensuring Konoha never suffers such humiliation again."

Shikaku's eyes narrowed.

There it was.

Not grief.

Opportunity.

Danzo continued.

"The Sand entered our walls."

"The Sound operated beneath our notice."

"Orochimaru infiltrated the Chūnin Exams."

"Three deceased Hokage were summoned inside the village."

"Shukaku manifested within striking distance of our civilian population."

Each sentence landed deliberately.

Not accusations.

Evidence.

"The policies of the previous administration prioritized cooperation and diplomacy."

Jiraiya leaned forward.

"Careful."

Danzo finally looked at him.

"I said nothing untrue."

"You don't need to."

Danzo's visible eye narrowed.

Jiraiya smiled without humor.

"You've always been good at saying everything while technically saying nothing."

Homura intervened.

"This isn't productive."

"It is necessary," Danzo replied.

Hiashi folded his hands.

"And what exactly are you proposing?"

Danzo didn't hesitate.

"Stability."

Shikaku almost smiled.

There was a politician's answer.

"What does stability look like?" he asked.

"A Hokage within days."

"Who?"

Silence.

Danzo allowed someone else to say it.

Nobody did.

So eventually—

"I am willing to shoulder the responsibility."

There it was.

Jiraiya laughed.

Once.

Danzo looked toward him.

"You find something amusing?"

"Just admiring the timing."

"Hiruzen is dead."

"I noticed."

"Konoha requires leadership."

"And somehow you just happen to be available."

Danzo's expression didn't change.

"My availability is irrelevant."

"Sure."

"My qualifications are not."

That—

Unfortunately—

Was true.

Danzo was old.

Experienced.

A student of the Second Hokage.

A veteran of multiple wars.

Politically connected.

And known, at least among Konoha's upper ranks, as a man willing to make decisions others wouldn't.

Which was exactly why half the room didn't trust him.

Shikaku rested his chin on his hands.

"There's another issue."

Danzo looked toward him.

"Public legitimacy."

That got everyone's attention.

Shikaku continued.

"The village just lost the Third during an invasion. Whoever takes that seat isn't simply inheriting an office."

He gestured toward the empty chair.

"They're inheriting fear."

No one interrupted.

"If the next Hokage looks like a political seizure of power, we create instability instead of solving it."

Danzo's gaze cooled.

"You believe the clans would reject me?"

"I believe you're asking the wrong question."

Shikaku shrugged.

"The civilians matter."

"The rank-and-file shinobi matter."

"The daimyō matters."

"And right now everyone wants reassurance."

His eyes moved toward Jiraiya.

"They want someone they recognize."

Danzo followed his gaze.

Jiraiya groaned.

"No."

Koharu frowned.

"We haven't asked."

"I'm answering early."

Homura adjusted his glasses.

"Jiraiya."

"No."

"You are one of the Legendary Sannin."

"No."

"Student of the Third Hokage."

"Still no."

"Teacher of the Fourth."

"You're making me want it less."

"And one of the strongest shinobi currently alive."

Jiraiya leaned backward.

"Absolutely fucking not."

Choza coughed into his hand.

Inoichi looked away.

Shikaku almost smiled.

Danzo watched carefully.

"You would refuse your teacher's final responsibility?"

The room chilled.

Jiraiya's smile vanished.

"Hiruzen never asked me to become Hokage."

"Perhaps because he knew you would refuse."

"Maybe."

Jiraiya leaned forward.

"But he did leave instructions concerning succession."

That changed everything.

Koharu looked at him sharply.

"What instructions?"

Jiraiya reached into his coat.

He placed a folded document on the table.

Hiruzen's seal was visible on the front.

Danzo's eye narrowed.

Homura opened it.

Read.

His expression changed.

Then he handed it to Koharu.

She read more slowly.

"What does it say?" Hiashi asked.

Koharu looked toward Jiraiya.

"The Third identified two preferred successors should the office become vacant."

Jiraiya nodded.

"Me."

He lifted one finger.

"Unfortunately for all of you, I'm smarter than I look."

A second finger.

"And Tsunade."

Silence.

Even Danzo didn't immediately respond.

Tsunade Senju.

Granddaughter of the First Hokage.

Grandniece of the Second.

Student of the Third.

One of the Legendary Sannin.

The greatest medical-nin of her generation.

A name known far beyond the Land of Fire.

A Senju.

And—

Absent from Konoha for years.

Danzo seized upon that immediately.

"Tsunade abandoned the village."

Jiraiya's eyes hardened.

"She left."

"During peacetime."

"After losing nearly everyone she loved serving it."

"A Hokage does not have the luxury of running from grief."

Jiraiya stood.

The table creaked beneath his hand.

"No."

His voice became dangerously quiet.

"But apparently some men have the luxury of using their teammate's funeral to campaign for his chair."

Nobody breathed.

Danzo and Jiraiya stared at one another.

Danzo didn't rise.

Didn't shout.

Didn't defend himself.

That somehow made it worse.

"Hiruzen and I disagreed for most of our lives," Danzo said.

His voice remained calm.

"But do not mistake disagreement for indifference."

Jiraiya said nothing.

Danzo looked toward the empty chair.

"For decades, Hiruzen chose the path of sunlight."

A pause.

"I handled what grew in the dark."

Shikaku's eyes sharpened.

Danzo continued.

"He believed Konoha could survive through bonds."

"I believed it survived through strength."

"And now—"

His eye moved back toward Jiraiya.

"—he is dead."

Jiraiya's chakra flickered.

Several clan heads shifted.

Danzo remained seated.

"If acknowledging the consequences of his choices makes me cruel, then I accept the accusation."

There was the trick.

Shikaku saw it immediately.

Danzo wasn't attacking Hiruzen.

He was turning Hiruzen into proof.

A dead man couldn't argue.

Koharu finally spoke.

"Enough."

Everyone stopped.

She placed Hiruzen's document on the table.

"Hiruzen's wishes do not automatically determine the Fifth Hokage."

Danzo inclined his head.

"Agreed."

"But they cannot be ignored."

Danzo said nothing.

Homura nodded.

"Tsunade must at least be contacted."

Hiashi spoke next.

"Agreed."

The Aburame representative nodded.

Then Inoichi.

Choza.

Slowly—

The room settled.

Not on a Hokage.

On a candidate.

Shikaku looked toward Jiraiya.

"You know where she is?"

"Roughly."

"Can you find her?"

"Yes."

"Will she come?"

Jiraiya scratched his cheek.

"...That's a different question."

Koharu sighed.

"Then convince her."

"That's why I'm bringing Naruto."

Several people looked at him.

Danzo's eye narrowed.

"Naruto Uzumaki."

"Yep."

"The Nine-Tails jinchūriki."

Jiraiya's expression changed.

Only slightly.

"Naruto Uzumaki."

He repeated it deliberately.

Danzo understood.

So did everyone else.

Danzo tapped one finger against his cane.

"The jinchūriki should remain inside the village during a period of instability."

"He's my student."

"He is a strategic asset of Konoha."

"He is a chūnin of Konoha."

Danzo's gaze hardened.

"Those facts are not mutually exclusive."

"No."

Jiraiya smiled.

"But only one of us is his teacher."

Danzo said nothing.

For now.

The decision was recorded.

Tsunade Senju would be located.

Contacted.

Formally offered consideration for the position of Fifth Hokage.

Jiraiya would depart within the week.

Until then, the advisors and senior leadership would share emergency administrative authority.

It wasn't elegant.

It wasn't permanent.

But Konoha had bought itself time.

The meeting adjourned.

Chairs scraped backward.

Clan heads left.

Jiraiya disappeared through the door without another word.

Eventually only Danzo remained.

Homura stopped before leaving.

"Danzo."

Danzo looked toward him.

"We were all his teammates once."

A long silence.

"I remember," Danzo said.

Homura left.

The door closed.

Danzo stared at Hiruzen's empty chair.

For decades—

That chair had belonged to someone else.

First Tobirama.

Then Hiruzen.

Then Minato.

Then Hiruzen again.

Never him.

His fingers tightened around his cane.

He remembered another day.

Another war.

Another room.

Tobirama asking for a volunteer.

Danzo hesitating.

Hiruzen speaking first.

A moment.

One moment.

And history had chosen.

Danzo had spent decades telling himself hesitation had cost him the Hokage's hat.

Perhaps it had.

Perhaps Hiruzen had simply been better.

That possibility was considerably harder to accept.

"You always were faster than me, Hiruzen."

No answer came.

Danzo looked toward the empty chair.

This time—

Hiruzen couldn't speak first.

"Come."

A masked shinobi appeared from the shadows.

Kneeling.

"Lord Danzo."

"The Sannin will leave soon."

"Yes."

"Do not interfere."

The operative waited.

Danzo continued.

"Observe."

"Tsunade?"

"Jiraiya."

A pause.

"And Naruto Uzumaki."

The masked shinobi bowed.

"Understood."

Danzo's eye returned to the empty chair.

"If Tsunade refuses, the village will require another candidate."

"And if she accepts?"

Danzo was silent for several seconds.

"Then Konoha will have its Fifth Hokage."

The operative waited.

Danzo's expression didn't move.

"Until it does not."

Across the village—

Sasuke Uchiha drove a kunai into a training post.

THUNK.

Another.

THUNK.

Another.

THUNK.

All three landed within an inch of one another.

Sasuke stared.

It wasn't enough.

Gaara's sand had stopped his Chidori.

He remembered that clearly.

The sensation of his hand entering the defense.

The resistance.

The screaming.

Then Gaara changing.

Growing.

Becoming something Sasuke couldn't understand.

He remembered fighting anyway.

Fire.

Wire.

Shuriken.

Chidori.

Everything he had.

He'd held Gaara off.

For a while.

Then—

Shukaku.

Sasuke's hand tightened.

Against that thing—

He'd been irrelevant.

Kakashi had trained him.

Not just his body.

His mind.

Control the anger.

Recognize it.

Don't let hatred decide the next movement.

Don't confuse desperation with strength.

Sasuke understood all of it.

He did.

That was the problem.

Understanding something didn't make the feeling disappear.

Naruto had arrived.

Carried him.

Protected him.

Then fought something Sasuke couldn't.

Sasuke remembered red chakra.

The forest shaking.

Seals spreading across the battlefield.

That impossible barrier.

Shukaku's Bijū Bomb.

And Naruto—

Standing in front of it.

Sasuke's jaw tightened.

Naruto had won.

He should've been happy.

Some part of him was.

That was his teammate.

His rival.

His—

Friend.

The word still felt strange.

But another part of Sasuke whispered something uglier.

You couldn't do that.

Sasuke formed seals.

"Fire Release: Great Fireball Jutsu!"

Flame consumed the target.

The post blackened.

Sasuke stared through the smoke.

Not enough.

He activated the Sharingan.

Again.

Again.

Again.

His chakra dipped.

He kept going.

He remembered Naruto at the Academy.

Dead last.

Idiot.

Couldn't even make a proper clone.

Sasuke had spent years ahead of him.

Then Naruto started catching up.

Then matching him.

Then—

Passing him?

Sasuke hated the thought.

Immediately.

Viscerally.

No.

Naruto hadn't passed him.

Not completely.

Sasuke was faster in certain exchanges.

More technically refined.

His Sharingan continued developing.

Chidori could kill.

He had advantages.

He knew that.

But when the threat had become something larger than a shinobi—

Naruto had possessed an answer.

Sasuke hadn't.

His neck burned.

Sasuke froze.

The Curse Mark.

His hand rose toward it.

He remembered the power.

The intoxicating surge.

How easy everything became when he let it spread.

How strong.

How fast.

How—

Angry.

Kakashi's regulation seal had helped.

But during the Gaara fight, Sasuke had pushed it.

Again.

Again.

Too much.

Ever since—

His thoughts hadn't felt right.

Not controlled.

Not entirely.

Sharper in the wrong places.

Every insecurity became an insult.

Every failure became humiliation.

Every time someone praised Naruto—

Something inside Sasuke wanted to break something.

He hated that.

Almost as much as he hated the fact that some of those thoughts felt like his own.

Sasuke threw another kunai.

It missed the center.

His Sharingan spun.

"Damn it."

"Your shoulder dropped."

Sasuke whirled.

Kakashi stood on a tree branch.

Book in hand.

Sasuke glared.

"How long have you been there?"

"Long enough."

Kakashi closed the book.

That got Sasuke's attention.

Kakashi almost never closed the book.

He dropped beside him.

"Again."

Sasuke threw.

THUNK.

Center.

"Again."

Another.

Center.

Kakashi watched him.

"You're thinking too much."

Sasuke scoffed.

"You tell me to think."

"I tell you to think clearly."

Silence.

"You're not."

Sasuke looked away.

Normally—

That would've been the end of the conversation.

He would leave.

Train harder.

Figure it out himself.

Uchiha didn't ask for help.

His father hadn't.

Itachi hadn't.

Sasuke—

Sasuke stopped.

Maybe that was the problem.

"Train me."

Kakashi blinked.

"I already do."

"More."

"Sasuke—"

"I need more."

There was something in his voice that made Kakashi stop joking.

"Why?"

Sasuke's fists tightened.

"Because I'm not strong enough."

"For what?"

"You saw it."

Kakashi waited.

"Gaara."

Sasuke's voice lowered.

"When he transformed."

His jaw tightened.

"I couldn't do anything."

"You survived."

"Naruto won."

There it was.

Kakashi's visible eye sharpened.

Sasuke immediately hated himself for saying it.

"That's not what I meant."

"Isn't it?"

Sasuke glared.

Kakashi didn't move.

Sasuke looked away first.

"...I don't know."

That answer frightened him more than anger would've.

Kakashi leaned against the training post.

"Sasuke."

Silence.

"Do you hate Naruto?"

"No."

Immediate.

Too immediate.

Kakashi noticed.

Sasuke noticed that Kakashi noticed.

His teeth clenched.

"No."

Quieter this time.

"I don't."

"Do you resent him?"

Sasuke didn't answer.

That was an answer.

Kakashi sighed.

"Rivals aren't supposed to make you comfortable."

Sasuke's eyes narrowed.

"If Naruto gets stronger, you get stronger."

"That's what I'm trying to do."

"No."

Kakashi tapped Sasuke's forehead.

Sasuke slapped his hand away.

"You're trying to prove that his growth doesn't matter."

Sasuke froze.

"There's a difference."

The Curse Mark burned again.

Sasuke grimaced.

Kakashi saw it.

His expression changed immediately.

"How often?"

"What?"

"That."

Sasuke's hand remained over his neck.

"Since the invasion?"

Silence.

"Sasuke."

"...A few times."

Kakashi stepped closer.

"Pain?"

"Sometimes."

"Chakra instability?"

"Yes."

"Urges to activate it?"

Sasuke hesitated.

"...Yes."

Kakashi's expression hardened.

"What else?"

Sasuke didn't answer.

"Sasuke."

The Uchiha looked toward the burned training post.

Then finally said it.

"My thoughts."

Kakashi went very still.

"They're..."

Sasuke struggled.

He hated struggling for words.

"Unclear."

"Explain."

"When I used the Curse Mark against Gaara, it was different."

"Different how?"

"I needed it."

Sasuke swallowed.

"And every time I used more..."

His fingers tightened.

"...it became easier to want more."

Kakashi said nothing.

"Since then, I get angry faster."

"At what?"

"Everything."

Sasuke paused.

Then forced himself to continue.

"Naruto."

Kakashi's eye narrowed.

"When people talk about what he did."

Another pause.

"When I remember what he did."

Sasuke looked disgusted with himself.

"I know he saved me."

"He saved the village."

"I know."

His voice rose.

"I KNOW."

Birds scattered from the trees.

Sasuke breathed.

Once.

Twice.

Kakashi waited.

Sasuke's voice became quieter.

"That's what makes it worse."

For several seconds—

Neither spoke.

Then Kakashi put a hand on Sasuke's shoulder.

"Thank you for telling me."

Sasuke looked at him.

No lecture.

No disappointment.

That somehow made it harder.

"I need to get stronger."

"You do."

Sasuke blinked.

Kakashi continued.

"But not like this."

His eye moved toward the Curse Mark.

"If that thing is affecting your thoughts, then treating every ugly thought it gives you as motivation is exactly what Orochimaru wants."

Sasuke's expression darkened.

"Orochimaru isn't controlling me."

"I didn't say he was."

Kakashi tapped the seal.

"I'm saying he doesn't have to."

That landed.

Kakashi stepped back.

"We'll train."

Sasuke looked up.

"More?"

"More."

"Chidori?"

"Eventually."

Sasuke frowned.

"Then what?"

"Control."

"I have control."

"Your neck is glowing."

Sasuke went silent.

"Chakra control. Sharingan endurance. Taijutsu. Mental discipline."

Kakashi's expression became serious.

"And we're going to figure out exactly what that seal is doing to you."

Sasuke nodded.

Then—

"Can you make me strong enough?"

Kakashi studied him.

"Strong enough for what?"

Sasuke thought about Shukaku.

Naruto.

Itachi.

The Curse Mark.

Everything.

"I don't know."

Kakashi's eye softened.

"Then that's the first thing we're going to figure out."

Far away—

Naruto Uzumaki was being forcibly marched back to the hospital by Sakura.

"THIS IS TYRANNY!"

"Keep walking."

"I'M A CHŪNIN!"

"You keep saying that like it makes your stitches stronger!"

"They're chūnin stitches!"

"THAT DOESN'T MEAN ANYTHING!"

Naruto complained loudly enough for half the street to hear.

Then—

PING!

He stopped.

Sakura nearly walked into him.

"What now?"

Naruto didn't answer.

A notification had appeared.

Not a quest.

Not a reward.

Something else.

RIVAL GROWTH LINK

Linked Rival: Sasuke Uchiha

Previous Stability: STRONG

Naruto's smile disappeared.

The words flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then—

CONNECTION INSTABILITY DETECTED

Emotional divergence increasing.

Competitive growth remains active.

Mutual trust compromised by unresolved negative influence.

Rival Growth Link:

STRONG → MODERATE (UNSTABLE)

Naruto stared.

Sakura waved a hand in front of his face.

"Naruto?"

He barely noticed.

Sasuke.

Nothing had happened between them.

Not that Naruto knew of.

They'd been fine in the hospital.

Sasuke had even come to visit him.

Sort of.

He'd claimed he was walking past.

Inside Naruto's hospital room.

Naruto would've laughed at that yesterday.

He didn't now.

The System wouldn't change something like this for no reason.

Naruto looked toward the Uchiha district.

For several seconds—

He said nothing.

Then Sakura's voice softened.

"What's wrong?"

Naruto dismissed the window.

"...Nothing."

Sakura frowned.

Naruto started walking again.

But his attention remained somewhere else.

Something was happening with Sasuke.

And for the first time since their rivalry had become something Naruto actually valued—

Naruto had the strange feeling that getting stronger might be pushing them apart.

Beneath Konoha—

Danzo received a report.

Above Konoha—

Kakashi began retraining Sasuke.

Across the village—

Naruto helped rebuild the home Hiruzen had died protecting.

And inside the Hokage Tower—

One chair remained empty.

For now.
