Chapter 18 - CH 18 - Precious People

Night fell quietly over the Land of Waves.

The mist rolled low across the ground, curling between trees like something alive.

Most of the village had gone dark, Sakura and Sasuke making sufficient progress had holed up in Tazuna's house for much needed rest.

But deep in the forest—

A small clearing flickered with faint chakra light.

Naruto sat cross-legged on the ground.

Seven Gravity Sealing Tags – Prototype lay spread out before him.

Alongside them—

A blank strip of paper.

A brush.

And ink he definitely did not borrow.

"…Alright."

He picked up one of the tags.

Stared at the intricate markings.

"…Swirls… lines… weird squiggles…"

He flipped it over.

"…More squiggles."

The Shinobi Codex hovered beside him.

Analysis Mode Active

Fuinjutsu Pattern Recognition: Partial

Naruto scratched his head.

"Okay so…"

"If Uzumaki are good at this…"

He dipped the brush in ink.

"…Then I should be too, right?"

He pressed the brush down.

Drew a line.

Stopped.

"…That looks terrible."

He tried again.

Slower this time.

Following the pattern.

Carefully copying the structure of the original seal.

Minutes passed.

Then—

Hours.

Attempts: 12

Failures: 12

Naruto flopped backward onto the grass.

"…This is hard."

The Codex chimed.

Progress Detected

Pattern Familiarity Increasing

Naruto groaned.

"Yeah well familiarity doesn't make it work!"

He sat up again.

"…One more."

He picked up the brush.

Focused.

Carefully—

He replicated the outer spiral.

Then the inner markings.

Then the kanji making up its center point.

His hand shook slightly.

"…C'mon…"

He finished the final stroke.

The paper sat still for a moment.

Nothing happened.

Naruto stared.

"…Bruh."

Then—

The ink flickered.

Just slightly.

Naruto's eyes widened.

"…WAIT—"

The Shinobi Codex pulsed brightly.

"…Okay mine looks like garbage but it kinda worked."

The Codex chimed again.

Naruto studied the seal he created.

"…I'm basically a genius."

The Codex remained silent.

"…Don't ruin this for me."

Time passed.

The moon rose higher.

Naruto kept practicing.

More attempts.

More failures.

A few minor successes.

*Ping*

User has much higher odds to create Minor gravity seals!

Each tag drained him further.

4 new Minor Gravity seals lay next to his lottery rolled prototypes.

Fuinjutsu LVL1 -> (5/10)

His hands trembled.

"…Okay…"

"…maybe I overdid it…"

He leaned back.

The world tilted slightly.

"…Just a quick nap…"

Naruto collapsed onto the grass.

Out cold, Morning quickly came to the clearing out protagonist found himself grinding in.

A graceful young woman approached the sleeping boy, nudging him awake, "…You'll catch a cold out here."

Naruto's eyes opened slowly.

"…Oh...Inspect."

"…You're the girl from before."

Growing more guarded Haku tilted his head slightly.

"From before what? You'll have to be more specific."

Naruto yawned.

"From when you rescued your boss from my Sensei."

Haku's eyes turned cold, senbon bristling in the herb basket she carried.

"For someone who acts so brash you have a surprising amount of foresight. You seeing me here isn't going to be a problem is it?"

Naruto sat up, rubbing his head.

"I'm not trying to start a fight lady, you could've done all kinds of stuff to me while i was sleeping" A sharp glint appeared in Naruto's eyes, "thanks for keeping it PG."

Choosing to ignore the cheeky MC, Haku looked at the scattered papers.

"…You were training?"

Naruto nodded.

"Trying to."

"…Sealing stuff."

Haku's gaze lingered on the crude tags.

"…You're not very good yet."

Naruto snorted.

"Yeah no kidding."

Silence settled between them.

The mist drifted softly.

Then Haku spoke again.

"…Why do you train so hard?"

Naruto leaned back on his hands.

"…Dunno."

"…Guess I always have."

Haku watched him quietly.

"…For someone?"

Naruto paused.

"…Yeah."

He looked up at the sky.

"…At first?"

"…It was kinda dumb."

Haku tilted his head.

Naruto scratched his cheek.

"I just wanted people to notice me."

"…Acknowledge me."

He laughed quietly.

"…Pretty lame, right?"

Haku shook his head gently.

"…No."

Naruto's expression shifted slightly.

"…But now…"

He looked down at his jacket used as a make-shift blanket, the spiral symbol glaring at him mockingly.

"…Now it's different."

Haku listened.

Naruto exhaled slowly.

"…I wanna figure out where I belong."

"…Like—who I am."

He tapped his pouch lightly.

"…My clan… my family…"

"…All that stuff."

His voice quieted.

"…Feels like there's something there. …And I just don't get it yet.""

Haku watched him for a long moment.

"…Having someone precious changes everything."

Naruto blinked.

"…Precious?"

Haku nodded.

"…When you have someone precious to protect…"

"…You become truly strong."

Naruto tilted his head.

"…You talking about that sword guy?"

Haku smiled softly behind the mask.

"…Something like that."

Naruto stared at him.

"…You're weirdly nice for someone that works for such an asshole."

Haku chuckled.

"…And you're strangely honest for a shinobi."

Naruto grinned.

"…Yeah I get that a lot."

The mist shifted.

Haku turned slightly.

"…You should head back."

"…Tomorrow will be difficult."

Naruto narrowed his eyes.

"…You know something?"

Haku didn't answer.

"…Goodnight."

And then—

He was gone.

Naruto sat there for a moment.

"…Yeah."

"…Definitely not suspicious at all."

He stood up slowly.

Still tired.

But his mind clearer.

"…Precious people, huh…"

He picked up his sealing supplies and meandered out of the forest towards the remaining members of his team.

"…Guess I've got a few of those now."

Morning would come soon.

The bridge would be finished.

Zabuza would return.

And this time—

It wouldn't be training.

The final confrontation was coming.
