Chapter 45 - Ch45:The First Injury

Chapter 45: The First Injury

The plains were quieter than the forest.

But not safer.

Alicia followed a small human group moving along the river's edge. Five of them this time. Closer together than before. One kept watch while the others gathered thicker grass from a Vital Grass patch.

They were getting better at this.

Not fast. Just… consistent.

"…You're learning," Alicia said.

They didn't stay long. The watcher stiffened, glanced toward the tree line, then signaled the others. They began to move.

Alicia shifted her focus.

At the forest edge, something was there.

Not rushing.

Waiting.

A mid-sized predator stepped out from the shadows.

Lean. Controlled. Not desperate.

It didn't charge.

It watched the humans the same way it watched resource zones.

Assessing.

The humans froze.

One backed up. Another picked up a branch—more for courage than effect.

No one ran.

Not yet.

Alicia narrowed her awareness.

"…Bad timing."

The wind shifted.

The predator moved.

Fast.

It didn't go for the group.

It targeted the one slightly separated.

A short sprint. A clean angle.

Impact.

The human fell.

Not dead.

But hit hard enough to stay down.

The others reacted immediately—shouting, pulling back, dragging the injured one by the arms.

Messy.

Uncoordinated.

But not frozen.

The predator didn't chase.

It stopped near the edge of the Vital Grass zone and held position.

Claiming space.

Alicia watched the distance grow between them.

"…You're not hunting them."

It wasn't about food.

It was about territory.

The group retreated farther into the plains.

They didn't stop until the forest was well behind them.

Only then did they slow.

The injured one tried to stand.

Failed.

The others kept moving.

Then finally lowered him near a thicker patch of grass.

Alicia focused.

The injury wasn't fatal.

But it mattered.

Movement slowed.

Breathing uneven.

Pain clear even without understanding the language.

"…So this is the limit."

Before this, humans had avoided direct consequences.

Now they had one.

Time passed.

The group didn't leave.

They stayed.

One kept watch.

Two gathered nearby grass.

One stayed with the injured.

Alicia tilted slightly.

"…You didn't abandon him."

That was new.

She shifted her attention to the surroundings.

The Life Energy in this area was stable.

Not strong like the forest.

But steady.

The injured human's breathing slowed over time.

Still weak.

But not getting worse.

Alicia observed quietly.

"…You chose the right place."

Not by knowledge.

By instinct.

Back at the forest edge, the predator remained.

Not moving.

Guarding.

Alicia compared both sides.

Forest—stronger, faster, dangerous

Plains—slower, safer, limited

"…If this continues…"

She didn't finish the thought.

Didn't need to.

Her attention returned to the injured human.

The others had formed a loose circle.

Watching.

Waiting.

Alicia considered intervening.

Then didn't.

"…Not yet."

Minutes passed.

Then longer.

The injured one moved again.

Slowly.

But this time—

he managed to sit up.

Alicia paused.

"…Recovery's working."

Not fast.

But real.

She watched a bit longer.

Then pulled her awareness back.

Across the plains, small groups continued moving.

Careful now.

Less direct.

More alert.

The change was immediate.

Subtle.

But clear.

"…You learned."

One injury.

And behavior shifted.

Far in the forest, another clash began.

Alicia didn't look.

She already knew how that would go.

Instead, she looked at the plains.

At the slower pace.

At the small groups adjusting.

"…Different path."
