Chapter 2: The Duel of Sovereigns
The roots of the World-Tree were not made of wood; they were massive, translucent conduits of solidified mana, pulsing with a rhythmic, sickly violet light. As the group reached the "Cortex"—the hollowed-out center of the tree's base—the air became so dense with the Quarantine's Authority that Samuel and Marcus were forced to drop to one knee, their lungs burning.
"Stay back," Leo commanded, his Eye of Truth spinning with a golden ferocity. "This isn't a physical fight. It's a battle of Soul-Ownership."
Standing before the glowing Fourth Fragment—a heart-shaped diamond the size of a house—was a figure cloaked in ancient, tattered robes. He had no face, only a void beneath a hood, but his stature was unmistakable. This was the Ancestor's Shadow, the guardian of the 10,000-year-old lie.
The Corrupted Interface
Suddenly, the air around the Shadow flickered. Dozens of glowing red screens manifested—the Original System. Unlike Leo's helpful interface, these were cold, mathematical, and aggressive.
[AUTHORITY DETECTED: UNIT-001 (PROGENITOR)]
[TARGET: ANOMALY-HEART (REBEL)]
[SKILL ACTIVATED: SOVEREIGN'S EXECUTION]
"He's using the System against me!" Leo shouted.
The Shadow didn't move, but a wave of red "Error-Code" energy surged forward. It didn't aim for Leo's body; it aimed for his Link. Nova, Amber, and Kael let out a collective shriek as the Shadow attempted to "Force-Unbind" them, treating them like glitchy data points to be deleted.
The Clash of Will
"You think a screen can break a bond?" Leo roared. He didn't summon a weapon; he stepped into the red energy, his own golden Sovereign's Link flaring to life.
Leo's power wasn't a series of commands; it was a Shared Heartbeat.
[Eye of Truth: Analyzing Sub-Routine...]
[Observation: The Shadow's System relies on 'Logic'.]
[Counter-Strategy: 'Chaos-Resonance'.]
"Nova, Spatial Distortion! Amber, White-Sun Flare! Kael, Void-Erosion!"
Leo performed the Triple-Sovereign Fusion, but he didn't use the old System-presets. He let the three spirits take the lead, their emotions—love, rage, and loyalty—flooding the Cortex. The Shadow's red screens began to glitch.
"Logic Error: Emotional Variable detected. Cannot compute 'Bond-Coefficient'."
The Mirror of Betrayal
The Shadow struck back by activating the Memory Mirror. It projected the scene Lira had described: the First Sovereign pushing millions of innocent people into the Mist, locking the gate with a cold, tearless gaze.
"You are of his blood!" the Shadow's voice boomed, a thousand echoes of the past. "You are the Jailer! Your power exists only because of this Sacrifice! If you break the Wall, you vanish!"
"Then let me vanish!" Leo countered.
He didn't look away from the horrific images. He used his Eye of Truth to look through them. He saw the Fourth Fragment at the center of the Shadow's chest. It wasn't just a battery; it was a Soul-Lock.
"I am a Breeder!" Leo's voice shook the very roots of the tree. "And a Breeder never keeps his partners in a cage!"
The Breaking of the Lock
Leo charged. He didn't use a skill. He used the Sovereign's Link to pull the power of Samuel, Marcus, Lira, and Kahn into himself. The five of them became a singular, blinding spear of light—the Resonance of the Two Worlds.
CRACK.
Leo's fist, wreathed in the combined starlight of the Star-Sect and the primal fury of the Tribes, slammed into the Shadow's chest.
The red screens shattered. The hood fell back, revealing nothing but a fading wisp of smoke. The Ancestor's Shadow dissipated, leaving behind only the Fourth Fragment, which turned from violet back to a clear, blinding white.
[WARNING: QUARANTINE LIFTED]
[MERGER STATUS: 100% INITIALIZED]
The World-Tree began to glow with such intensity that the Mist-Wall itself started to turn into golden rain. The "Cage" was gone.
The Horizon of the New World
As the light faded, Leo stood at the roots, gasping for air. The System Stone at his belt didn't pulse indigo or violet anymore. It turned Gold.
He looked out from the roots. The Mist-Wall was gone. For the first time in 10,000 years, the people of Earth could see the violet skies of the Outer Lands, and the people of the Outer Lands could see the green oceans of Earth.
But the two worlds weren't colliding; they were Intertwining.
"Leo... look," Samuel whispered, pointing at the sky.
The Primal Maw—the giant eye in the clouds—let out a scream of agony. Without the "Sacrifice" of the Quarantine to feed on, it was starving. It began to shrivel, its dark influence being pushed back by the sheer volume of "New Mana" flooding the atmosphere.
"It's not over," Lira said, looking at the fused horizon. "The Maw is retreating to its home dimension. But now... the door is open both ways."
Leo looked at the Fourth Fragment in his hand. He had the Eye, the Mirror, and the Link. He had the truth of the past and the keys to the future.
"Then we're going to chase it," Leo said, his eyes burning with the light of a Thousand Stars. "The Second Year is over. Now, we go to the Source."
