Chapter 43 - 43

Chapter 7: The Choice of the Sovereign

The High Council Chamber was not a room of debate, but the literal brain of the city-beast Aethelgard. Pulsing violet translucent floorboards revealed massive, organic mana-nerves beneath, all converging toward a central throne.

Sitting there was Chairman Valerius, his face a calm mask of ancient, cold intelligence. In his hand, he held the Third Fragment—a jagged shard of pure white light that hummed with the frequency of creation itself.

"You've arrived, Leo Heart," Valerius said, his voice echoing not from his throat, but from the walls of the city. "You bring the two pieces of the lock to the final door. The Primal Maw is hungry, and the harvest is overdue."

The Final Bargain

Leo stood at the edge of the platform, his Void-Sovereign Avatar flickering. The strain of holding the fusion was tearing at his soul space.

"I'm not here to open the door, Valerius," Leo spat, his voice a chorus of his own and Kael's growl. "I'm here to break the key."

"With what? That 'System' in your head?" Valerius laughed, standing up. "That System was built by your ancestor using the Maw's own logic. It is a tether, Leo. As long as you have the Shop, the Points, and the Interface, you are just a well-fed dog on a very long leash. The Maw owns that System."

[SYSTEM: Warning! External Override Detected.]

[Status: Initiating Self-Destruction Protocol...]

Leo gasped, falling to one knee as a searing pain erupted in his mind. The blue screens flickered violently, turning red with error codes.

"The only way to stop the City-Beast," Valerius whispered, stepping closer, "is to return the System to its origin. It was never a gift; it was a fragment of the Void itself. If you let it go, you lose your 'Cheats.' You lose the Shop. You lose the guidance. You become... a normal human."

The Return to Origin

Leo looked at the ghosts of his progress: the thousands of points he'd earned, the shop items he'd relied on. He realized Valerius was right. The System was a crutch that the Cult could kick away at any moment.

"Nova... Amber... Kael..." Leo whispered into the mental link. "Do you trust me without the screens?"

A wave of warmth and fierce loyalty washed back from his pets. They didn't care about the Rank-Gauges or the Evolution-Paths. They cared about him.

"Fine," Leo roared, reaching into his own mind. "System! I renounce the Interface! Return to your origin!"

[SYSTEM: Final Command Received.]

[Protocol: 'Sovereign's Independence'...]

[Status: All Data Purged. Shop Closed. Interface... Deleted.]

A blinding flash of indigo light erupted from Leo's chest. The floating blue screens shattered into a thousand glass-like shards, which condensed into a single, dormant black stone—the First Fragment, returned to its raw state.

The Awakened Power

Valerius smirked, raising his hand to strike the now "powerless" boy. "Now, die as a mortal."

But as Valerius lunged, he froze. The air around Leo didn't turn cold; it turned heavy.

The power didn't leave Leo. Without the System acting as a filter, the energy he had cultivated—the years of breeding, the soul-merges, the draconic essence—finally settled into his own DNA. The violet glow in his eyes didn't flicker; it became a permanent, burning fire.

He didn't need a Rank-Gauge to tell him he was Grade-SSS.

"The System didn't give me this power," Leo said, his voice deep and steady. "It just helped me find it. Now, it's just me and my partners."

Leo raised his hand. Without a command prompt, Nova created a spatial rift, Amber infused it with white-sun fire, and Kael channeled the void. It was a Triple-Resonance born of pure bond, not a programmed skill.

The Breaking of the Throne

Leo didn't use "Dimensional Erasure." He simply willed the space around Valerius to cease existing.

The Chairman's eyes widened in terror as his artificial "God-Body" began to flake away. "No! Without the System, you shouldn't be able to calculate the mana-ratios! You should be blind!"

"I'm a Heart," Leo said, stepping through the air as if it were solid ground. "We don't calculate life. We feel it."

Leo struck the central throne—the city's brain—with a fist wreathed in the combined aura of his family's legacy. The white marble cracked. The obsidian nerves beneath shriveled.

The Third Fragment flew from Valerius's hand. Leo caught it.

As the three fragments—the Black, the Blue, and the White—came together in his palm, they didn't form a weapon for the Maw. They formed a New Heart.

The city of Aethelgard let out a final, shuddering groan and began to settle, its "hunger" extinguished. The giant eye in the sky—the Primal Maw—blinked in confusion as its tether to the Earth was severed.

The New Dawn

The High Council Chamber was in ruins. Valerius had vanished, his physical form unable to withstand the loss of the Void-link.

Leo stood in the wreckage, breathing heavily. He looked at his hands. No screens appeared. No points were added. He felt... quiet. But he also felt stronger than he ever had before.

Samuel and Jason Heart burst through the doors, followed by a confused but safe group of students.

"Leo! You did it!" Samuel shouted. "The city... it stopped moving. The people are safe!"

Leo looked at his friends, then down at the small black stone in his hand—the remains of the System. It was dormant, peaceful.

"The harvest is over," Leo said, smiling at his father. "But the world is different now. The magic isn't in the machines anymore. It's in us."

Jason Heart looked at his son, seeing the same fire that had been in the first Leo's eyes 10,000 years ago. "So... what do we do now? Without the Alliance? Without the System?"

Leo looked out over the city as the sun rose, no longer blocked by purple clouds. He felt Nova on his shoulder, Amber at his side, and Kael on his wrist.

"We go back to the ranch," Leo said. "We have a lot of pets to heal. And this time... we're going to teach the world how to breed them for real."

[THE END... OF THE BEGINNING.]
