"I tune the Level 2 [Plaguespreader Zombie] with the Level 6 [Changshi the Spiridao]!"
Phila's voice became distorted under the strain of four hundred kilometers per hour. The rotten zombie hanging from the motorcycle frame transformed into two green rings of light that enveloped the robed figure seated behind her.
"The requirements for a Synchro Summon are a Zombie Tuner plus 1 or more non-Tuner Zombie monsters. 2 plus 6 equals 8!"
"The blade of ignorance that rends apart the endless night. Dance upon the boundary between flame and frost! Synchro Summon! Appear!"
[Shiranui Shogunsaga] Level 8│FIRE│Zombie│3000 ATK
A third massive burst of energy erupted from Phila's D-Wheel.
A handsome man with long purple hair appeared beside [Red-Eyes Zombie Dragon Lord], dressed in a purple Shinto hunting robe. He wielded two katana. Flames blazed along the blade in his left hand, while the blade in his right emitted bone-piercing frost.
Phila's D-Wheel speed was forcefully pushed even higher by this Synchro Summon. She had completely left Niobe behind, and the distance between them rapidly widened.
"I activate the first effect of [Shiranui Shogunsaga]: If this card is Special Summoned, banish 1 Zombie monster from your Graveyard; this card gains Attack equal to the banished monster's original Attack until the end of the turn."
Phila's right hand swept across the Duel Disk.
"I banish [Changshi the Spiridao] from my Graveyard. [Shiranui Shogunsaga] gains 2000 Attack, becoming 5000–"
[Shiranui Shogunsaga, ATK: 3000 → 5000]
"What?!"
From the corner of her rearview mirror, Niobe saw the Attack value skyrocket in an instant, causing her pupils to shrink.
"Then I activate the second effect of the [Changshi the Spiridao] that was just banished: If this card is banished, banish 1 Zombie monster from your Graveyard; Special Summon this card. If this card Special Summoned by this effect leaves the field, place it on the bottom of the owner's Deck."
Phila banished [Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring] from her Graveyard.
"I banish [Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring] from my Graveyard and Special Summon [Changshi the Spiridao] in Attack Position."
At this moment, four gigantic monsters stood on Phila's field. The jet-black dragon lord, the war god of ice and flame, the axe-wielding minotaur, and the zombie taoist who had just returned to the battlefield.
"Battle Phase!" Phila shouted into the raging wind.
"[Shiranui Shogunsaga] attacks [Scrap Dragon]! Iceflame Lotus Slash!"
[Shiranui Shogunsaga, ATK: 5000] vs [Scrap Dragon, ATK: 2800]
The swordsman in purple flashed forward, instantly appearing above the steel dragon. The twin blades in his hands crossed as one freezing and one burning slash carved lotus-shaped trails through the air.
Once the blades descended, the Scrap Dragon had no chance of returning alive.
BOOM!
A massive explosion erupted behind Niobe. Steel fragments mixed with flames and ice crystals poured down onto the sea like a storm of metal.
Niobe's D-Wheel shook violently from the tremendous energy impact. The vehicle swayed hard, and its speed dropped sharply.
[Niobe, LP: 8000 → 5800]
"It's not over yet! I activate the second effect of [Scrap Dragon]: If this card is destroyed by your opponent and sent to the Graveyard, target 1 non-Synchro 'Scrap' monster in your Graveyard; Special Summon it. I Special Summon [Scrap Raptor] in Defense Position!"
From the wreckage of Scrap Dragon, a small mechanical velociraptor reassembled itself and curled beside Niobe's D-Wheel.
"Then [Red-Eyes Zombie Dragon Lord] attacks [Scrap Raptor]!"
The black dragon above Phila opened its jaws. Without the slightest pause, ghostly blue flames melted the newly revived mechanical dragon into molten iron.
"After that, [Gozuki] and [Changshi the Spiridao] attack directly!"
The axe-wielding minotaur and the zombie taoist charged through the aftermath of the explosion. Their attacks materialized and slammed heavily into Niobe's D-Wheel.
[Niobe, LP: 5800 → 2100]
The violent chain of attacks caused Niobe's D-Wheel to completely lose speed control. The front wheel veered uncontrollably to one side, nearly crashing into the sea barrier.
"Tch!"
Niobe gritted her teeth and forcefully twisted the handlebars, her right foot pressing down hard on the vehicle stabilizer. The tires scraped across the track, scattering a long trail of blinding sparks.
She stabilized the D-Wheel.
"I end my turn." Phila pressed the End Turn button on the Duel Disk.
"My turn! Draw!"
Niobe violently drew the top card of her Deck. Her left hand remained firmly on the handlebar. The violent impacts from earlier had splashed bitter seawater across her goggles, but that did nothing to dim the astonishing brightness in her eyes.
She glanced at her hand.
"There's still hope… Everything rides on this one turn!"
Niobe gave Phila no chance to catch her breath. She precisely pulled out two cards from her hand.
[Junk Converter] Level 2│EARTH│Warrior│400 ATK
"I activate the first effect of [Junk Converter]: I discard this card and 1 Tuner from my hand to activate it. Add 1 'Synchron' monster from my Deck to my hand."
She inserted both [Junk Converter] and another [Scrap Synchron] from her hand into the Graveyard.
"I discard these two cards and add [Junk Synchron] from my Deck to my hand."
A card depicting a warrior with a red scarf popped out from the search slot.
[Junk Synchron] Level 3│DARK│Warrior│1300 ATK│Tuner
"Next, I Normal Summon [Junk Synchron]!"
The small mechanic-like warrior wearing a red cape appeared atop Niobe's engine hood. It nimbly flipped through the air and waved its little fist toward Phila ahead.
"I activate its first effect: When this card is Normal Summoned, target 1 Level 2 or lower monster in the Graveyard; Special Summon it in Defense Position. Come back, [Junk Converter]!"
The yellow little warrior that had just been sent to the Graveyard appeared once more.
"And then… I activate the Normal Spell Card in my hand, [One for One]!"
"A Normal Spell Card?!"
Phila's pupils shrank. She quickly glanced toward the Life Point display on the left side of Niobe's dashboard. In a Turbo Duel, this was almost suicidal.
"But…"
"Yeah. According to the rules of Turbo Duels, activating a Spell Card other than a Speed Spell costs 2000 LP!"
Niobe clenched her fist.
VMMMM!
The white-and-purple D-Wheel beneath Niobe released a violent whining screech. Black smoke burst from the exhaust pipes at the rear as the entire vehicle seemed to lose power in that instant. Its speed plummeted, and the chassis shook violently across the track.
[Niobe, LP: 2100 → 100]
Her Life Point display turned into a dangerous blood-red warning.
"Then watch me struggle, Phila! Don't think you can shake me off!"
Niobe shouted amidst the roar of the nearly stalling engine.
[Jet Synchron] Level 1│FIRE│Machine│500 ATK│Tuner
"First effect of [One for One]: Send 1 monster from the hand to the Graveyard; Special Summon 1 Level 1 monster from the Deck. I send [Sonic Chick] from my hand to the Graveyard and Special Summon [Jet Synchron] from my Deck!"
A monster resembling a miniature jet turbine engine appeared beside Niobe. It desperately sprayed flames behind itself, and the resulting airflow barely stabilized her violently shaking D-Wheel.
"Adjusting my hand! Level 3 [Junk Synchron] tunes with Level 2 [Junk Converter]!"
The light of Synchro Summoning reflected in Niobe's eyes.
"The gathered stars shall awaken a new power and become a shining path of light! Synchro Summon! Come forth!"
[Junk Warrior] Level 5│DARK│Warrior│2300 ATK
The warrior clad in a purple cape completed an incredibly flashy split in midair before landing firmly on the track ahead of Niobe.
With the burst of energy brought by the Synchro Summon, the perpetual motion engine of Niobe's D-Wheel released another high-frequency roar. The speed that had nearly dropped to zero instantly recovered. The white afterimage of the motorcycle stretched wildly across the track as she rapidly closed in on Phila once more.
"[Junk Warrior]?!"
Phila pressed her right hand against the control panel as she watched the purple warrior's Attack begin to flicker.
"After that, I chain block! Chain-1 [Junk Warrior], Chain-2 [Junk Converter]. The later Chain resolves first!"
Niobe manipulated her Duel Disk.
"I activate the second effect of [Junk Converter]: If this card is sent to the Graveyard as Synchro Material, target 1 Tuner in your Graveyard; Special Summon it. The monster I Special Summon is the [Scrap Raptor] that was destroyed earlier!"
[Scrap Raptor] Level 4│EARTH│Dinosaur│1400 ATK│Tuner
The shattered mechanical velociraptor reconstructed itself behind Niobe once again.
Right after, the effect of [Junk Warrior] began resolving.
"Effect of [Junk Warrior]: When this card is Synchro Summoned, it gains Attack equal to the combined Attack of all Level 2 or lower monsters I control."
Niobe pointed toward the miniature jet engine still circling the field.
"I still control the Level 1 [Jet Synchron]. Therefore, [Junk Warrior] gains 500 Attack!"
[Junk Warrior, ATK: 2300 → 2800]
The purple warrior swung his right fist, and the blue spiraling aura gathered around it locked onto the black dragon ahead.
Niobe had already closed to within less than ten meters behind Phila.
