Chapter 9 - Chapter 9 — A Man Who Never Chases

Ethan's POV

There were very few things in life that Ethan Moretti could not control.

Business deals.

Territories.

People.

Even wars between rival families followed a certain predictable logic once you understood the players well enough.

But there was one thing in Ethan's life that had begun slipping outside that perfect control.

And her name was Meera Narayanan.

It annoyed him.

Not because he disliked the feeling.

But because he had never experienced it before.

The thought of someone occupying his mind so persistently was… new.

For days now, he had tried to stay away from the campus.

He had meetings to attend.

Operations to supervise.

Decisions that affected hundreds of people across cities and borders.

Yet somehow, between all of that, his mind returned to the same image.

Brown skin glowing under soft dorm lights.

Dark eyes watching the world carefully.

Small silver earrings that moved whenever she turned her head.

And that tiny red bindi resting perfectly between her brows.

He had seen thousands of women in his life.

Beautiful women.

Confident women.

Dangerous women.

But none of them had made him pause the way she did.

None of them had made him want to watch quietly instead of taking what he wanted.

That alone should have warned him.

Instead, it fascinated him.

The Moretti estate stood far outside the city, surrounded by tall iron gates and acres of carefully maintained land.

It had been the family's home for decades.

Powerful people had walked through those halls.

Allies.

Enemies.

Politicians who pretended not to know the family's true influence.

Tonight the dining room felt unusually lively.

Ethan rarely attended family dinners unless his father specifically requested it.

And when Alessandro Moretti requested something, it wasn't optional.

The long dining table was already set when Ethan entered.

His mother sat at the head beside his father.

Sofia Moretti looked up immediately, her warm smile appearing the moment she saw her eldest son.

"There he is."

Ethan leaned down and kissed her cheek lightly.

"Good evening, mother."

Across the table, his sister leaned back in her chair with an amused grin.

"Look who remembered he has a family."

Isabella Moretti had always enjoyed provoking him.

At twenty-two she had inherited the sharp intelligence of their father and the fearless confidence of their mother.

Beside her sat the youngest member of the family.

Luca Moretti, nineteen years old and constantly observing everything with quiet curiosity.

Luca grinned.

"Did the great Ethan Moretti finally run out of important criminals to threaten tonight?"

Ethan pulled out his chair calmly.

"If I had, you'd be the first one on the list."

Luca laughed.

Their father raised an eyebrow but said nothing.

Dinner began normally.

Conversation moved from business to politics to family matters.

But Ethan noticed the way his father occasionally studied him across the table.

That meant something was coming.

Alessandro Moretti never wasted attention.

And sure enough, halfway through dinner, his father set down his wine glass.

"There is a proposal we need to discuss."

Ethan already knew where this was going.

Marriage alliances were common among powerful families.

Strategic unions that strengthened influence and territory.

His father continued calmly.

"The DeLuca family has approached us."

Isabella immediately rolled her eyes.

"Oh no."

Luca leaned forward with interest.

"Their daughter?"

Alessandro nodded.

"A marriage alliance."

Silence settled briefly over the table.

Ethan didn't even react.

He simply continued eating.

His mother noticed immediately.

"You're very quiet," Sofia said softly.

Ethan finally looked up.

"I'm not interested."

The answer came too quickly.

Too firmly.

Isabella smirked.

"Well that was easy."

Alessandro studied his son carefully.

"You haven't even heard the details."

"I don't need to."

His father leaned back slightly.

"And why not?"

Ethan wiped his hands slowly with a napkin.

Because the only woman occupying his thoughts right now was a girl studying engineering on a university campus.

A girl who had absolutely nothing to do with mafia alliances.

But he didn't say that.

Instead he replied calmly.

"I'm not marrying someone for territory."

Luca laughed softly.

"That's literally how this entire world works."

"Not for me."

Alessandro's expression didn't change.

But his eyes sharpened.

"You sound certain."

"I am."

Isabella leaned forward with growing curiosity.

"Wait a second."

Her eyes narrowed playfully.

"You're rejecting a mafia princess without even thinking about it."

She tapped the table slowly.

"That means something else is happening."

Luca's grin widened.

"Oh, this is getting interesting."

Sofia watched her son carefully.

"Ethan," she said gently, "are you seeing someone?"

The room suddenly felt quieter.

Ethan held his mother's gaze.

"No."

But he didn't deny the rest.

Isabella immediately caught that detail.

"You didn't say you weren't interested in someone."

Luca snapped his fingers.

"Oh my god."

He leaned across the table.

"Our big scary brother has a crush."

Ethan sighed slowly.

"You're both children."

But his father was still watching him.

Carefully.

"You're refusing an alliance that would strengthen our position."

Alessandro's voice remained calm.

"That means whatever you have in mind must be important."

Ethan met his father's gaze without hesitation.

"I'll handle my own future."

Silence settled again.

Then Alessandro nodded slowly.

"Very well."

Isabella blinked.

"That's it?"

Her father looked at her.

"Your brother will make his own choices."

Sofia spoke next.

"But there is one thing you must promise us."

Ethan waited.

His mother's voice remained gentle, but serious.

"Whatever this is… whoever this girl is…"

She paused.

"Do not hurt her."

Ethan's eyes darkened slightly.

"I wouldn't."

Alessandro added quietly,

"And do not take the same path I once did."

For a moment Ethan saw something old and regretful in his father's expression.

A memory.

A mistake.

"I won't," Ethan said calmly.

His father nodded once.

"Good."

But Isabella was not finished.

She leaned toward Ethan with a mischievous grin.

"So when do we meet the mysterious woman who made you reject an entire mafia alliance?"

Ethan stood up.

"You won't."

Luca laughed.

"Oh we definitely will."

Ethan left the dining room before the teasing could continue.

Later that night he stood alone on the balcony overlooking the estate.

The city lights glowed faintly in the distance.

The cool air cleared his thoughts.

But not completely.

Because no matter how hard he tried, his mind returned to the same place.

Campus.

Dorm window.

Her.

He had tried staying away.

But it hadn't worked.

Watching from a distance through reports and cameras wasn't enough anymore.

He wanted to see her again.

In person.

So the next morning, Ethan Moretti did something completely ridiculous.

He drove to her college.

Students moved across campus in clusters of conversation and laughter.

No one paid attention to the tall man walking quietly among them.

But Ethan noticed everything.

Security patterns.

Building entrances.

Camera placements.

Old instincts never switched off.

Then he saw her.

Standing near the engineering building.

Talking to someone.

The man beside her was tall and broad-shouldered.

Dark skin.

Relaxed posture.

Laughing easily.

Ethan recognized him immediately.

Marcus Johnson.

He had seen the name in the background reports.

A classmate.

Friend.

Nothing dangerous.

Still.

Watching them together created an unfamiliar tension inside Ethan's chest.

Marcus said something that made Meera laugh.

The sound carried faintly across the courtyard.

Ethan's jaw tightened slightly.

He didn't like it.

Not the laugh.

But the fact that someone else had caused it.

Ridiculous.

He knew it was irrational.

She wasn't his.

She didn't even know him.

Yet something inside him resisted the idea of anyone standing too close to her.

His thoughts turned darker.

Possessive.

Protective.

Confusing even to himself.

Meera said goodbye to Marcus and started walking across the courtyard.

Straight toward Ethan.

She wasn't looking where she was going.

Her eyes were fixed on something in her bag.

The collision happened before she even noticed him.

Her shoulder bumped into his chest.

Hard enough that she nearly lost balance.

Ethan reacted instantly.

His hand caught her arm.

Steady.

Firm.

For the first time their eyes met properly.

Dark brown eyes lifted toward him in surprise.

Recognition flickered there.

The same face she had glimpsed in the shadows.

For a second neither of them spoke.

Then Meera pulled her arm back quickly.

"I'm sorry," she said softly.

Ethan said nothing.

He simply watched her.

Studying every detail up close for the first time.

She was even more striking than he remembered.

Her brows knitted together slightly as she looked at him again.

Like she was trying to place something.

Trying to remember.

Ethan felt a slow smile forming inside him.

Because something had just changed.

The girl who had only seen shadows before…

Had finally seen him.

And the game between them had officially begun.
