Chapter 79 - Chapter 79: The Steam-Core

The interior of Ferrum-Sect was a masterpiece of desperate ingenuity. If the Bit-Cloud was a world of invisible silk, the Iron City was a world of heavy, vibrating brass.

Massive chains clanked overhead, moving crates of scrap metal through the humid air. The walls—the inner hulls of the ancient carriers—were covered in glowing orange pipes that hissed like angry snakes. Here, the "Wild Aether" wasn't just filtered; it was shackled.

"Watch your step, kid," Silas shouted over the roar of a nearby furnace. "The floor is hot enough to melt your soles if the coolant pipes burst."

Renny looked around, her eyes wide as she clutched her worn cloak. "How do they live like this? It's so... loud."

"It's the sound of staying alive," Silas replied. He led them deeper into the ship, past hundreds of workers who were training in a large open bay.

***

Hope stopped for a moment to watch the workers. Unlike her, they didn't have orange lines glowing under their skin. They looked exhausted. Some were sitting in a circle, breathing in a heavy, rhythmic pattern that sounded like a bellows. Others were lifting massive iron weights while trying to hold a small spark of Aether between their palms.

"They're trying to cultivate," Hope whispered.

One of the men, a giant of a worker with soot-stained arms, let out a frustrated yell. The spark between his hands turned into a puff of black smoke, singeing his hair.

"Dammit!" he growled. "I've been at this for three months and I can't even light a candle!"

"Patience, Bram," a voice called out. A woman with a mechanical eye and a tool belt stood nearby. "The Aether is wild now. We're not 'Admins' anymore. We're just ants trying to move a mountain."

Silas looked at Hope. "They're getting stronger, but it's slow. A month of their training is like an hour of yours. That's why you're a target, Hope. You're the only one who still has the 'Key'."

***

They reached the very heart of the ship—the Steam-Core.

This room was different. It was circular, filled with a massive brass turbine that reached fifty feet into the air. In the center of the turbine was a thick lead-glass window. Inside, a sapphire-blue crystal pulsed with a rhythmic, heartbeat-like light.

"Silas! You're back!"

A man slid down a ladder from the upper walkways. He was covered in oil, with a pair of brass goggles pushed up onto his forehead. This was Bax, the Master-Engineer of the Iron City.

"Bax, this is the girl," Silas said, gesturing to Hope.

Bax wiped his hands on a greasy rag and stared at Hope. His eyes shifted to the orange lines on her neck. "By the Source... she's glowing in [PRIMARY_ORANGE]. Silas, you didn't tell me she was a 'Root-Child'."

"She's more than that," Silas said. "She has AIDA."

Bax's jaw dropped. He looked at the massive turbine behind him. "Then maybe we can finally stabilize the [ARTHUR_SHARD]. It's been 'Red-Lining' for weeks. If it blows, it'll take this whole shipyard with it."

***

Bax led Hope to a small pedestal directly in front of the Steam-Core. The heat here was intense—nearly 180°C near the vents—but Hope felt a strange attraction to the sapphire light inside the glass.

[ AIDA: "HOPE, THAT_CRYSTAL_CONTAINS_THE_ 'LOGIC_CENTER' OF_ARTHUR_VANCE. IT_IS_CURRENTLY_IN_A 'FEEDBACK_LOOP'. IT_IS_TRYING_TO_CALCULATE_THE_WORLD, BUT_IT_HAS_NO_INPUT_DATA." ]

"What do I do?" Hope asked.

[ INITIATING: SYSTEMATIC_REFINEMENT_v2. ]

AIDA's orange interface flooded Hope's vision. She saw a complex set of "Data-Tunnels" inside her own body. To rank up, she had to force the Aether through her [LATENCY_POINTS]—knots in her nervous system that were still "Offline."

The process was scientific, precise, and incredibly painful.

While the workers outside were simply "guessing" how to move energy, AIDA was providing a mathematical map. Hope sat cross-legged, her skin beginning to steam.

"Agh!" Hope gasped as the first "Latency Point" in her spine shattered. It felt like a bolt of lightning had been driven into her marrow.

Renny and Silas watched from the walkway. Renny was horrified. "She's burning! Silas, stop her!"

"No," Silas said, his voice hard. "Watch."

He pointed to the workers on the floor below. They were watching too. They saw the orange light around Hope becoming so dense it started to form a physical shield. Unlike their messy, flickering sparks, Hope's energy was Order.

"She's doing in ten minutes what we've been trying to do for a year," Bram, the giant worker, whispered from the doorway. He looked at his own hands with a new kind of determination. "She's showing us the way."

Silas nodded. "She's the 'Update' we've all been waiting for. But she's paying the price for it."

***

Hope's scream echoed through the Steam-Core as the final knot in her neck snapped open. A massive wave of orange energy erupted from her, hitting the brass turbine and making it spin with a deafening whistle.

[ RANK_UP_COMPLETE. ]

[ NEW_RANK: RANK_2 (PROCESSOR_STAGE). ]

[ CAPABILITIES_UNLOCKED: 'AETHER_SENSE' AND 'DATA_OVERLAY'. ]

Hope slumped forward, her breath coming in heavy, ragged gasps. But when she opened her eyes, the world was different. She didn't see "Gears" and "Steam" anymore. She saw the [CODE] behind them.

She saw the heat signatures in the pipes. She saw the "Stress-Levels" in the metal. And she saw the Arthur Shard.

It wasn't just a blue crystal anymore. It was a [CONSCIOUSNESS].

[ AIDA: "SYNCING_WITH_ADMIN_SHARD_001... ]

[ ARTHUR_VANCE: '...H-O-P-E...?' ]

The voice in the crystal was faint, like a memory of a memory, but it was him.

"Arthur?" Hope whispered, her hand trembling as she touched the glass.

The blue light surged, meeting her orange energy. For a split second, the Iron City didn't just vibrate—it [SANG]. Every pipe, every gear, and every worker's heart beat in a single, perfect synchronization.

***

The moment passed. The light dimmed, and Hope pulled her hand away, her fingers burnt.

"He's in there," Hope panted, looking at Silas. "He's awake. But he's... he's fragmented. Like a puzzle with half the pieces missing."

Bax checked his gauges and let out a long whistle. "The pressure stabilized. By the Source, girl... you just saved the city."

But the victory was short-lived. AIDA's voice suddenly turned sharp and cold.

[ WARNING: LONG-RANGE_PULSE_DETECTED. ]

[ AIDA: "YOUR_RANK_UP_CREATED_A_ 'BEACON' _IN_THE_WILD_AETHER. THE_ARCHIVE_SECT_HAS_YOUR_COORDINATES." ]

"How long?" Silas asked, his hand going to his mechanical arm.

[ ESTIMATED_ARRIVAL: 2_HOURS. ]

Silas turned to the workers who were still staring at Hope in awe.

"You heard the lady!" Silas roared. "The dream-time is over! Man the harpoons! Feed the boilers! We've got company coming, and they aren't here for a 'Sync'!"

Hope stood up, her legs shaky but her eyes burning with a new, processed power. She looked at Bram and the other manual cultivators.

"I'll show you how to fight them," Hope said, her voice resonant. "I'll show you how to 'Buffer' the pain."
