Chapter 47 - Reconstruction Protocol

Light didn't fade—

It collapsed.

Like reality itself had been folded… then forced back open.

Maya gasped as her vision snapped back.

Cold floor.

White walls.

The room.

But something was wrong.

Very wrong.

She lifted her hand slowly—

Then froze.

"…what?"

Her fingers—

Glitched.

Just for a second.

Like they weren't fully there.

Across from her—

The man in black was watching.

But this time—

Even he looked unsettled.

"…so it finally started," he murmured.

Maya's heart pounded.

"What did you do to me?"

A pause.

Then—

"I didn't do this," he said.

A beat.

"You triggered it."

Her chest tightened.

"No," she said immediately.

"That thing did."

The man in black shook his head slowly.

"It responded to you."

Silence.

Heavy.

Then—

"Reconstruction isn't activation," he continued.

"It's alignment."

Maya's breathing became uneven.

"…alignment of what?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Which made it worse.

Then—

"Of everything that was split."

Meanwhile—

Ethan hit the ground hard.

Air knocked out of his lungs.

"…okay," he groaned.

"That was new."

He pushed himself up—

Then stopped.

Because the corridor—

Was gone.

Instead—

He stood in a space that looked incomplete.

Walls half-formed.

Lights flickering in and out.

Like the world was still loading.

"…yeah," he muttered.

"That's not good."

He took a step forward—

And the ground beneath him shifted slightly.

Not physically—

Structurally.

Like it was adjusting to him.

Then—

He saw it.

A reflection.

But not on a mirror.

In the air.

Faint.

Distorted.

Him—

And someone else.

Standing in the same space.

Ethan's eyes narrowed.

"…Maya?"

The reflection glitched—

Then stabilized.

And for a second—

He saw through her eyes.

The room.

The man in black.

The fear she wasn't showing.

Then—

Gone.

Ethan exhaled slowly.

"…yeah," he said.

"That's definitely new."

Back with Maya—

The connection didn't fully break.

It lingered.

Like an echo.

Her thoughts weren't entirely hers anymore.

Not in a dangerous way—

But in a shared one.

She turned sharply.

"…Ethan?"

No response.

But she felt him.

Faint.

Distant.

Alive.

The man in black noticed.

"Interesting," he said quietly.

Maya's eyes snapped to him.

"What is happening to us?"

He stepped closer.

Studying her carefully.

"Reconstruction merges compatible subjects," he said.

A pause.

"Not physically."

Another pause.

"But structurally."

Her mind raced.

"…you mean—"

"Yes," he said.

"Your abilities."

A beat.

"Your memories."

Another.

"Your perception of reality."

Her heart dropped.

"…they're combining."

He didn't deny it.

Ethan clenched his jaw.

"Yeah, no," he said.

"I'm not sharing my head with anyone."

The space around him flickered again—

Then responded.

Almost like it heard him.

But didn't care.

Instead—

It adjusted.

And suddenly—

He wasn't alone.

Maya appeared.

Not fully real.

Not fully there.

But visible.

Standing a few steps away.

They both froze.

"…you see this too, right?" Ethan asked.

Maya nodded slowly.

"…yeah."

A pause.

"This isn't good."

Ethan huffed lightly.

"Understatement."

They stood there—

Facing each other—

In a space that wasn't supposed to exist.

Then—

The system spoke again.

"Phase two initiated."

Ethan rolled his eyes slightly.

"Of course it is."

Maya stepped forward slightly.

"What is phase two?"

Silence.

Then—

"Stability test."

The space around them shifted violently.

The incomplete world—

Snapped into something else.

A city.

Familiar.

But broken.

Distorted.

Buildings bending at impossible angles.

Sky flickering like a damaged screen.

Maya's breath caught.

"…this is—"

Ethan finished it.

"Your world."

A pause.

"…and mine."

The same place.

But wrong.

Very wrong.

Then—

People appeared.

Dozens.

Walking.

Talking.

Living.

But—

Glitching.

Repeating movements.

Frozen expressions.

Like copies.

Maya stepped back slightly.

"They're not real…"

"Not completely," Ethan said.

Then—

The system clarified.

"Simulated reality based on combined memory structures."

Ethan exhaled slowly.

"…yeah, that checks out."

Maya's chest tightened.

"What's the test?"

Silence.

Then—

"Stability under conflict."

Ethan's expression darkened.

"…meaning?"

The answer came instantly.

Cold.

Clear.

"Only one structure can stabilize."

Maya froze.

Ethan didn't move.

Then—

"…translate that," he said flatly.

A pause.

Then—

"Only one of you can maintain control."

Silence fell.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Maya's voice came out quietly.

"…you're saying—"

Ethan finished it.

"Yeah."

A beat.

"It's choosing between us."

The world around them flickered again.

Unstable.

Waiting.

Watching.

Maya looked at Ethan.

For the first time—

Not as a mystery.

Not as a threat.

But as someone connected to her fate.

"…what do we do?" she asked.

Ethan didn't answer immediately.

His eyes scanned the broken world.

Calculating.

Thinking.

Then—

A faint smirk appeared.

"…we break the test."

Maya blinked.

"…what?"

Ethan looked at her.

Sharp.

Certain.

"They want one winner?" he said.

A pause.

"Then we don't play."

The system reacted instantly.

The sky cracked slightly.

"Non-compliance detected."

Ethan's smirk widened.

"Yeah," he said.

"Get used to it."

Maya stared at him—

Then—

For the first time—

She smiled slightly.

"…okay."

A pause.

"Let's break it."

And just like that—

The rules stopped mattering.
