Chapter 6 - Chapter 6 — The Signal

The black car disappeared into the night.

For a few seconds, the street became quiet again.

Too quiet.

Adrian stood still, replaying every moment in his mind.

The men.

The device.

The word they used.

Observers.

Detective Marcus Hale watched the empty road carefully.

Then he looked back at Adrian.

"You want to tell me who those guys were?"

Adrian answered honestly.

"I don't know."

Marcus narrowed his eyes.

"You don't know… or you don't want to say?"

Adrian didn't respond.

Inside his mind, thousands of thoughts were moving rapidly.

Marcus already suspected too much.

But telling him everything would only create more problems.

Marcus sighed.

"Alright."

He leaned against a streetlight.

"But those guys weren't amateurs."

He continued calmly.

"The way they moved, the way they talked… that was professional."

His voice lowered slightly.

"The kind of professionals that work for organizations that don't appear in government files."

Adrian's mind immediately connected that statement to something else.

The memory.

The laboratory.

The voices.

"Subject 19."

Marcus suddenly spoke again.

"You're not safe."

Adrian looked at him.

Marcus continued.

"If they tried once, they'll try again."

Adrian's brain agreed.

The probability calculation was simple.

Chance of another attempt within 48 hours: 83%.

Marcus stood upright.

"I'll have patrol units in the area tonight."

He paused.

"But honestly?"

"That might not be enough."

Adrian asked quietly,

"Why are you helping me?"

Marcus shrugged slightly.

"Because I hate mysteries."

Then he smiled faintly.

"And your brain is the biggest mystery I've seen in years."

Marcus turned and began walking back toward his car.

Before leaving, he added one final sentence.

"Try to stay alive tonight, Adrian."

The detective drove away.

Now Adrian stood alone under the streetlight.

His mind slowed slightly.

But only slightly.

Because a new thought had appeared.

A strange one.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

His brain began analyzing the earlier conversation again.

The observers said his brain activity exceeded expected limits.

Which meant they were monitoring it somehow.

Adrian's eyes widened slightly.

Monitoring required signals.

Sensors.

Tracking systems.

Some kind of data transmission.

His brain immediately began searching for the source.

Possible implants.

External trackers.

Environmental scanners.

Then suddenly—

A small sensation appeared behind his left ear.

A faint warmth.

Something he had ignored his entire life.

Adrian's fingers slowly touched the spot.

His brain scanned the memory instantly.

Childhood hospital visit.

A "routine procedure."

Doctors saying everything was normal.

But now his mind saw the truth.

It wasn't normal.

Adrian whispered quietly.

"…A transmitter."

Across the city…

Inside the dark observation room…

Dozens of screens displayed Adrian's brain activity.

Numbers were moving rapidly.

Graphs rising.

Data streaming.

The mysterious man watched carefully.

One of the scientists nearby spoke nervously.

"Sir… Subject 19's cognitive levels are increasing again."

The man nodded calmly.

"Yes."

Another scientist asked,

"Should we disable the signal?"

The man shook his head.

"No."

His eyes remained on the screen.

"I want to see what happens when he discovers it."

Back on the street…

Adrian's brain had already reached the same conclusion.

If the transmitter existed…

Then they were watching him right now.

Adrian looked slowly at the street cameras.

Then the streetlights.

Then the buildings.

His mind imagined invisible eyes everywhere.

Watching.

Measuring.

Waiting.

Adrian spoke quietly.

"So you're watching."

Inside the observation room, the mysterious man smiled.

"Very good."

Adrian continued speaking softly.

"If you're watching… then you already know something."

His brain calculated the probability of the observers hearing him.

97%.

Adrian's voice became colder.

"You failed."

The scientists in the observation room looked confused.

But the mysterious man's smile grew wider.

"Interesting."

Adrian continued walking toward his house.

But inside his mind, a new plan was forming.

For years they had watched him.

Studied him.

Measured his thoughts.

But now…

Adrian's mind had awakened.

And if they wanted to observe him…

Then he would observe them back.

Inside the observation room, one of the scientists suddenly shouted.

"Sir!"

The man turned.

"What is it?"

The scientist pointed at the screen.

"Subject 19's brain is doing something strange."

The graphs began rising rapidly.

Faster.

Higher.

More intense than before.

The mysterious man leaned closer.

"What is he doing?"

The scientist answered nervously.

"He's… calculating something massive."

Back on the quiet street…

Adrian whispered to himself.

"Let's see who's really watching who."

His mind had just begun analyzing something enormous.

A pattern.

A hidden system.

A network.

And if his calculations were correct…

Within three days…

He would discover the location of the organization watching him.

But Adrian's mind also predicted something else.

Something dangerous.

Someone else was already moving.

Someone whose brain was just as fast as his.

And that person had just seen Adrian for the first time.

Far away…

Inside another building…

A young woman stared at a screen showing Adrian's brain activity.

She smiled slightly.

"So…"

She whispered.

"Another one finally woke up."

Her fingers moved across a keyboard.

Her mind already running calculations.

"Let's see how fast you really are, Adrian Vale."
