Chapter 11 - Chapter 8: Echoes After Survival

Darkness pressed in from all directions, thick and suffocating, as though it had weight. Aarav floated somewhere within it, neither awake nor fully gone, his thoughts scattered and distant. Time had no meaning there. Seconds could have been hours, or days.

Then slowly, faint sounds began to seep through.

"…he's still breathing…"

"…no way he survived that…"

"…that's the guy who killed it…"

The voices felt far away at first, like echoes traveling through water. Gradually, they grew clearer, pulling him upward from the depths.

Pain followed. It spread through his body in waves. Deep, dull, and relentless. His muscles felt torn, his limbs heavy, his chest tight with every shallow breath. Even the simple act of existing hurt.

His fingers twitched and that small movement sent another pulse of pain through his arm, sharper this time, forcing a weak reaction from his body.

His eyelids fluttered. For a moment, they refused to open, weighed down by exhaustion. Then, with effort, he forced them apart. Light flooded his vision, blinding at first. Shapes blurred together. White ceiling, rows of seats, indistinct figures moving around him.

"…where…?" he managed, his voice dry and cracked.

The world slowly came into focus.

He was inside the campus auditorium.

Students filled the space. Some sitting in silence, others lying against the steps or leaning against walls, their faces pale with exhaustion. A few stood in small groups, whispering. And many of them… were staring at him.

Not normally. Not like they were looking at a classmate.

But like they were looking at something dangerous.

"…Aarav?", The voice cut through everything.

He turned his head slowly.

Niharika rushed toward him, dropping to her knees beside him without hesitation. Relief washed over her face the moment she saw his eyes open.

Up close, Aarav noticed things he hadn't before.

Her hair which is long, dark, slightly messy from everything that had happened and fell loosely over her shoulders. A few strands clung to her face, damp with sweat. Her eyes, sharp and expressive, held a mix of worry and relief that she wasn't even trying to hide. There was strength in her posture, but also fatigue like she had been holding herself together for far too long.

"Aarav… you're awake," she said, her voice softer now but still unsteady with emotion. "Can you hear me? Are you okay?"

Aarav stared at her for a moment longer than he should have. "…yeah," he replied quietly.

Even that single word took effort.

"I'm… fine."

It wasn't true, and they both knew it.

Niharika exhaled, tension leaving her shoulders slightly, though her expression didn't fully relax.

"You were out for almost a day," she said. "You didn't move at all. We thought…"

She stopped herself, biting back the rest.

Aarav shifted, trying to sit up.

The moment he did, pain shot through his side, sharp enough to make him pause halfway. His body resisted the movement, muscles protesting as if they had forgotten how to function.

"Don't force it," Niharika said quickly, placing a hand on his shoulder to steady him. "You're still recovering."

Aarav let out a slow breath and adjusted, pushing himself up more carefully this time until he was leaning against one of the seats. His head still felt heavy. His vision wasn't fully stable.

But he was conscious.

"Rohan?" he asked immediately.

Niharika hesitated.

"He's not here right now," she said.

Aarav's gaze sharpened slightly. "Not here?"

"He went out," she explained. "Not outside the barrier. Just the expanded zones nearby. He's looking for survivors."

Aarav closed his eyes briefly, exhaling through his nose. "…that idiot."

There was no real anger in his voice. Just concern.

Silence settled between them for a moment before Niharika spoke again, more quietly this time.

"…I'm sorry."

Aarav didn't need to ask.

"…about Pranav."

The name lingered.

Something tightened in his chest.

Aarav looked down at his hands, his fingers curling slowly into fists.

"He trusted me," he said, his voice low and steady. "He followed me without questioning anything."

Images flickered in his mind. Pranav running beside them, shouting, panicking, still choosing to stay.

"And I told him to come with me." His grip tightened. "I saw how that thing moved. I knew it wasn't normal. I knew we weren't ready."

His voice wavered slightly, just for a moment, before he forced it back under control.

"And I still took him there."

Niharika didn't interrupt.

"He died right in front of me," Aarav continued, quieter now. "And I couldn't stop it."

The weight of those words hung heavy in the air.

For once, there was no system. No battle. No distraction. Just reality.

Niharika gently tightened her grip on his arm.

"You survived," she said softly. "That matters."

Aarav shook his head, "Not enough."

Silence followed again, Until a black window burst into existence in front of him.

[SYSTEM NOTICE]

You have unclaimed rewards.

Aarav stared at it for a moment before letting out a quiet breath.

"…right."

The system didn't wait.

[STAGE 1 CLEARED]

Reward: 10,000 EXP

[SPECIAL SCENARIO COMPLETED]

You have slain the Abyssal Tentacle Beast

Niharika's eyes widened.

"That… was you?" she asked. "You actually killed that thing?"

Aarav said,"…yeah."

Her gaze lingered on him, something unreadable passing through her expression.

"…I still don't understand how you're alive," she admitted.

Aarav didn't answer.

Another surge of notifications followed.

Reward: 60,000 EXP

[LEVEL UP]

You have reached Level 10

The moment it triggered, a wave of energy surged through his body.

Aarav inhaled sharply.

It wasn't painful but it was overwhelming. His muscles tightened, then relaxed as warmth spread through him, reinforcing what had been damaged.

"…this feels strange," he muttered.

"Better?" Niharika asked.

"…stronger," he replied.

"But not stable."

Another window appeared.

[NEW CLASS UNLOCKED]

Class: Ranger

Aarav read through it carefully, his mind already processing the implications.

"Increased accuracy… extended effective range…" he murmured.

"And higher mana output," Niharika added.

"…that's dangerous," he said quietly.

Not excited. Not impressed. Just… aware.

The system continued.

[LEVEL MILESTONE REACHED]

Special Skill Unlocked

[STAT POINTS: +10 AVAILABLE]

Aarav leaned back slightly, exhaling, "…this really is a game."

Niharika's expression hardened, "Except we don't respawn."

Aarav glanced around the auditorium again.

"…how many made it?" he asked.

"…not many," she replied.

She gestured toward the crowd. "After the stage ended, the barriers expanded. People started moving, trying to find others. This place… just became a gathering point."

"Defensible," Aarav said.

She nodded and said, "And necessary. Especially for what's coming next."

Aarav's gaze shifted back to her, "…what do you mean?"

"You didn't see it," she said. "You were unconscious."

"Check your system."

Aarav raised his hand.

The window appeared instantly.

And as he read,

"…you've got to be kidding me…"

[NEXT EVENT: SURVIVAL STAGE]

Objective: Survive the Monster Horde for 3 Hours

Start Time: 1 Day 18 Hours Remaining

Aarav pushed himself forward despite the lingering weakness.

"Three hours?" he said, disbelief slipping into his voice. "Against a horde?"

Several nearby students turned at the tone.

Niharika lowered her voice.

"That's why Rohan left," she said. "He's trying to gather people. Build numbers."

She met his eyes directly and said, "If we fight this alone… we die."

Aarav ran a hand through his hair, his thoughts racing now.

"…damn it…"

"He said the same thing," she added. "That survival isn't about strength anymore. It's about coordination."

Aarav went silent. Thinking. Calculating.

"…he's right," he said finally.

Niharika studied him for a moment, "You're different," she said.

Aarav didn't respond because something else had surfaced.

That voice, "You did well… my vassal."

His body stiffened slightly.

"…what was that…?" he murmured.

"What?" Niharika asked.

"…nothing."

But then,

A voice spoke again.

Clear. Close. Right beside him.

"How do you like your new class?"

Aarav froze.

His breathing stopped.

"…and your weapon?"

His eyes widened slowly.

The voice lowered, almost amused.

"Enjoying it already?"

"Aarav?" Niharika called, her brows knitting slightly as she watched his expression change.

"…did you hear that?" he asked quietly.

"Hear what?" Niharika asked with confusion.

Aarav didn't answer.

Because this time, there was no doubt.

That voice…

Was meant only for him.
