The safehouse didn't hold them anymore.
Not after that.
Not after the truth had been spoken out loud.
By the time they stepped outside, the night felt sharper—like something unseen had drawn a boundary across Beacon Hills and dared anything powerful enough to cross it.
Aiden walked ahead without hesitation.
No pause.
No second glance.
The others followed.
Not because he told them to.
Because there wasn't any other direction that made sense anymore.
They didn't go far.
Just deep enough into the forest to put distance between them and the safehouse—but not so deep that they lost awareness of the town.
Aiden stopped in a small clearing.
Familiar ground.
Training ground.
Control ground.
Now—
Something else.
Scott exhaled, running both hands through his hair. "Okay. That was officially worse than anything we've dealt with so far."
Stiles nodded immediately. "Yep. Ancient balance-keeping system that wants to erase our friend here? Not on my list of 'fun high school problems.'"
Derek didn't speak right away. His gaze stayed on Aiden, measured, calculating.
"You believe him," Derek finally said.
It wasn't a question.
Aiden didn't turn.
"Yes."
That answer settled something—and unsettled everything else.
Scott frowned. "You're just… okay with that?"
"No."
Now Aiden turned.
"But I don't waste time denying reality."
That landed harder than expected.
Scott opened his mouth—
Closed it again.
Because there wasn't a real argument there.
Behind them, Allison stepped forward, stopping just to Aiden's side. Not too close. Not distant either.
Balanced.
"If what he said is true," she said, "then whatever's coming isn't just another enemy."
Aiden nodded slightly. "It isn't."
Stiles raised a hand halfway. "Cool, cool. Love that. So instead of a psycho Alpha or hunter problems, we now have… what exactly? Supernatural government?"
Peter chuckled softly from the edge of the clearing. "That's not entirely inaccurate."
Derek shot him a look. "Explain."
Peter's smile faded just slightly—not gone, just… more thoughtful.
"There are forces that don't involve themselves unless something disrupts the natural order," he said. "Old things. Patient things."
His eyes flicked toward Aiden.
"And he qualifies."
Scott groaned. "Fantastic. He's a walking disruption."
Aiden ignored the comment.
"What matters," he said, "is how they act."
Allison crossed her arms slightly. "You think they'll attack directly?"
"No."
Everyone looked at him.
Aiden's gaze shifted toward the town, visible in the distance through the trees.
"They'll test again," he said. "Different angles. Different pressure."
Stiles frowned. "That sounds like exams, and I hate it."
Lydia, who had been quiet until now, stepped forward.
"No," she said calmly. "It's worse than that."
All eyes turned to her.
She didn't look at them.
She looked at Aiden.
"They're not just testing him," Lydia continued. "They're testing everything around him."
Silence.
Because that—
Made sense.
Scott's expression changed. "You mean… us?"
Lydia nodded faintly.
"If he's the center of this," she said, "then the people closest to him are variables."
Aiden didn't deny it.
Didn't soften it.
"Correct."
Scott let out a slow breath. "Okay… that's officially not great."
Derek's jaw tightened. "Then they're going to target us."
Aiden finally faced them fully.
"Yes."
The bluntness hit harder than anything else.
Stiles raised both hands. "I would just like to point out that I am human and very targetable."
"No one asked you to stay," Aiden said.
That could've been harsh.
But it wasn't.
It was honest.
And that made it harder to argue against.
Scott stepped forward. "We're not leaving."
Aiden's eyes flicked to him.
"You don't understand what that means."
Scott held his ground. "I understand enough."
A pause.
"I'm not walking away."
That was the first line drawn.
Derek stepped up beside him.
"Neither am I."
Second line.
Peter tilted his head slightly, amused but not dismissive.
"Oh, this is going to be interesting," he murmured. "Loyalty in the face of something that can actually end you."
Allison didn't speak.
She didn't need to.
She stepped forward—
Standing just slightly closer to Aiden than before.
That was her answer.
Clear.
Unspoken.
But absolute.
Lydia watched all of it.
Every movement.
Every choice.
And then—
She moved too.
Not dramatically.
Not obviously.
But enough.
Enough to be included.
Enough to matter.
Aiden looked at them.
Really looked.
For a moment—
He didn't speak.
Because this wasn't control.
This wasn't dominance.
This was something else.
Choice.
And that—
Was more unpredictable than anything the man in the safehouse had warned about.
"You're making a mistake," Aiden said finally.
Scott almost smiled. "Probably."
"But we're still here," Stiles added.
Derek didn't say anything.
He didn't need to.
Aiden's gaze shifted to Allison last.
She met it without hesitation.
"No one's forcing you," he said quietly.
"I know."
A pause.
"And?"
Her voice didn't waver.
"I'm choosing this."
That—
Changed something.
Not visibly.
Not dramatically.
But enough.
Aiden turned away slightly, looking back toward the town.
"Then you follow my lead," he said.
Not a demand.
A condition.
Scott nodded first. "Fine."
Derek followed. "Agreed."
Stiles hesitated. "…I'm going to regret this, but okay."
Peter smirked faintly. "I'm curious enough to stay."
Lydia didn't say anything.
She just watched Aiden.
And that was enough.
Allison spoke last.
"Tell us what to do."
The shift was complete.
Aiden stepped forward slightly.
"First," he said, "we stop reacting."
Scott frowned. "Meaning?"
"We move before they do."
Derek's eyes narrowed. "You have something in mind."
"Yes."
Aiden's gaze sharpened.
"The messenger."
Scott blinked. "The guy from the forest?"
Aiden nodded.
"He's not just observing," he said. "He's guiding."
Peter's expression grew more interested. "A handler."
"Exactly."
Allison stepped closer. "So we find him."
Aiden shook his head slightly.
"No."
That caught them off guard.
"We make him come to us."
Stiles groaned softly. "Of course we do."
Lydia tilted her head. "How?"
Aiden's eyes flickered faintly.
"We give them a reason to escalate."
Silence.
Scott stared at him. "That sounds like a terrible plan."
Aiden didn't disagree.
"It's the only one that forces them out."
Derek considered it for a moment.
Then nodded.
"He's right."
Scott sighed. "I hate that you said that."
Peter chuckled. "Oh, I'm starting to enjoy this already."
Allison's gaze stayed on Aiden.
"You're not just reacting to them," she said quietly.
Aiden met her eyes.
"No."
A pause.
"I'm pulling them in."
That sent a chill through the clearing.
Because it wasn't reckless.
It wasn't emotional.
It was deliberate.
Calculated.
And dangerous in a way none of them had dealt with before.
Lydia smiled faintly.
Not because it was safe.
Because it was inevitable.
The game had changed.
The rules didn't apply anymore.
And Aiden—
Was no longer something being tested.
He was something drawing everything toward him.
Far away—
Deeper than the forest.
Deeper than anything they could see.
The man stood alone.
Watching.
Waiting.
And for the first time—
He wasn't entirely sure—
If they were still in control of what came next.
