Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: The Heart of the Dragon

The morning after the dungeon visit was bright and clear. The sun felt warm on my skin as I stood on the high balcony of the castle. I was thinking about how much my life had changed. I was no longer a girl reading a book in the rain. I was a Queen loved by a Dragon King.

I heard the sound of heavy wings. I looked up and saw a giant shadow over the courtyard. It was Alaric in his dragon form. He was beautiful—his scales were like black diamonds, and his eyes were like glowing suns. He landed softly on the stone floor, the wind from his wings making my hair fly.

He shifted back into his human form in a flash of gold light. He walked up the stairs to me, his chest bare and his skin glowing with heat. He held a small, wooden box in his hands.

"You saved my mind from the poison, Seraphina," he said. His voice was soft but strong. "I want to give you something that no other Queen has ever owned. It is more than a jewel. It is a piece of my life."

He opened the box. Inside was a necklace with a single, glowing red stone. It looked like a drop of fire frozen in glass.

"What is it?" I whispered, touching the stone. It felt warm, just like his skin.

"It is a Dragon Heart Stone," Alaric explained. He stepped behind me and put the necklace around my neck. His fingers were hot against my skin, giving me that familiar "shiver."

"When I am a dragon, my mind is different," he said. "It is hard for me to speak. I feel only hunger and anger. But this stone is linked to my soul. As long as you wear it, you will be able to hear my thoughts. You will know what the Dragon is thinking."

As the stone touched my chest, I felt a sudden shock. It wasn't painful, but it was intense. It felt like a golden thread was being pulled from my heart and tied to his. This was a Soul-Link. In the book, Alaric never shared this with anyone. He was always afraid that if someone saw his thoughts, they would be disgusted by the animal instincts of the dragon.

But now, he was opening his mind to me.

"I can feel your pulse," I gasped, holding the stone. "It's not just thoughts, Alaric. I can feel your emotions."

"Yes," Alaric whispered, his eyes searching mine. "If I am angry, the stone will turn a dark crimson. If I am calm, it will glow like a soft sunset. You will always know if I am in danger, no matter how far away I am."

To test the gift, Alaric closed his eyes. He didn't speak with his mouth, but suddenly, I heard a voice inside my head. It was Alaric's voice, but it sounded deeper, like the rumble of a mountain.

'I love you,' the voice said in my mind. 'I will protect you until the stars fall from the sky.'

But it wasn't just words. Through the stone, I suddenly saw the world through his eyes. For a split second, my vision shifted. I could see the heat rising from the ground. I could hear the heartbeat of a bird in a tree miles away. I could smell the distant scent of the ocean.

"I can see what you see," I breathed, my eyes wide with wonder.

"That is the true gift," Alaric said. "The Dragon sees the truth. You cannot be lied to while you wear this. If someone speaks to you with hate in their heart, the stone will grow cold. It will protect you from the secrets of the court."

However, the stone also carried a heavy truth. Alaric took my hands, his expression becoming serious.

"There is one more thing, Seraphina. This stone is a part of my life force. If I am hurt, the stone will crack. If I fall in battle, the stone will shatter."

I looked at the beautiful red gem and felt a heavy weight. This wasn't just a gift; it was a responsibility. He was putting his life in my hands. If I lost the stone, I lost him.

"I will never let it break," I promised, my voice filled with determination. "I will protect this stone just like I protect you."

Alaric pulled me close, his arms wrapping around my waist. He looked deep into my violet eyes. "You are the only one who ever looked at the monster and saw a man. I am not afraid of you, Seraphina. I am afraid of a world where you cannot hear me."

I leaned my head against his chest, listening to his real heartbeat and the thoughts in my mind at the same time. I had changed the book in many ways, but this was the greatest change of all. The lonely King was finally understood.

"Thank you, Alaric," I whispered. "It is the best gift I have ever received. It makes me feel... connected to you in a way I never thought possible."

We stood there on the balcony, watching the kingdom below. I knew that with this gift, no enemy could ever trick us again. I was the voice of the Dragon, and he was my heart. I could feel his warmth, his love, and his fierce protectiveness flowing through the stone and into my soul.

The Villainess was gone. The Savior was here, and she was wearing the heart of a King.
