"It all started with a bolt of lightning in the rolling dark clouds..."
Standing atop the jagged, smoldering ruins of what used to be the Baxter Building on Earth-2149, Victor Von Doom crossed his heavy, steel-plated arms. His silver armor and green cloak cut a sharp silhouette against the rotting, ash-choked sky. He slowly turned his masked head, glancing sideways at Spider-Man. He silently questioned why this hyperactive teenage vigilante felt the need to narrate their arrival in a dead universe like a cheap radio host.
Did the boy ever stop talking?
The evidence of a brutal struggle was carved into the rooftop. Deep plasma scorch marks and a massive impact crater indicated where the 616 Fantastic Four's Fantasti-car had recently crashed.
Doom didn't care about the collateral damage. He simply raised his gauntlet, his fingers tracing a sharp geometric pattern in the foul air. A shimmering, emerald energy shield materialized around Peter. Doom hadn't cast the protective ward out of any paternal instinct or concern for the boy's safety; Spider-Man's biological connection to the Web of Fate made him the only viable vehicle for multiverse transit. If the boy got bitten by a zombie, Doom would be stranded.
As for Doctor Doom himself? He required no such protection. Doom feared no infection.
"So," Peter said, tapping the side of his mask as he looked out over the burning, apocalyptic hellscape of New York City. "How do we find them?"
Doom looked at him, his mechanical voice dripping with absolute, aristocratic disdain. "This question is meaningless."
Before Peter could ask for a clarification, a catastrophic explosion detonated a few miles to the south, sending a towering plume of orange fire and black debris high into the polluted clouds.
Several blocks away, the streets were a meat grinder.
The Fantastic Four of Earth-616 stood back-to-back, fighting a desperate, losing battle against a tidal wave of the undead. They weren't alone. Fighting at their flank was a grizzled, white-haired Magneto—the sole surviving mutant powerhouse of this doomed reality.
Magneto's face was etched with unimaginable grief and rage. He had managed to secure a dozen human survivors in his orbital space station, Asteroid X, along with three terrified civilians cowering behind him now. Their desperate extraction plan had been simple: reach the Baxter Building, hijack whatever dimensional shuttle Reed Richards had built, and abandon this dying reality for Earth-616.
But the horde of zombified heroes had cut them off, swarming forward in a terrifying, relentless flood of rotting spandex and decaying flesh.
"My goodness," Johnny Storm yelled, hovering ten feet off the ground and unleashing a sweeping torrent of white-hot fire into a pack of undead X-Men. "Are there really this many superpowered people in this universe?!"
Below him, Ben Grimm's massive stone fists became blurs of crushing kinetic force. The Thing drove a right hook directly into the decaying skull of Zombie Elektra, shattering her jaw and sending her spinning into the rubble.
"Looks like the chances of Match Head ever becoming a superstar over here are pretty slim," Ben grunted, shaking dark, coagulated blood off his rocky knuckles.
"Watch your six, Ben!" Johnny shouted, incinerating Zombie Daredevil mid-leap. "It's gonna be real troublesome if one of these freaks gets a bite out of you!"
"Ha!" Ben roared, slamming both fists into the asphalt to create a shockwave that threw three undead Avengers off their feet. "They gotta chew through solid rock first!"
In the center of the formation, Susan Storm stood with her hands thrust forward, veins popping on her temples. She maintained a massive, invisible force field dome over their group and the three civilians. Undead fists, claws, and energy blasts pounded relentlessly against the barrier, spider-webbing the construct with stress fractures.
Beside her, Reed Richards wasn't fighting. Lacking the raw defensive capability to survive close-quarters combat with the infected, he was hyper-focused on a portable scanner, rapidly analyzing chunks of necrotic flesh blasted into their perimeter.
Magneto didn't bother with science. He was an avatar of pure vengeance. The Master of Magnetism ripped the steel skeletons out of abandoned cars, tearing the vehicles into jagged shrapnel and hurling them through the zombie horde like a localized hurricane of razor blades. He was seeking atonement for failing his world, and he was delivering it in blood.
"Fresh meat!" a horrifyingly distorted voice shrieked. "Fresh meat!"
Zombie Quicksilver broke from the pack. He was a terrifying blur of decaying silver and blue, moving far faster than the eye could track. He bypassed Magneto's shrapnel storm, phasing through a tiny gap in Susan's flickering shield, and sprinted straight for Ben's blind spot.
Just as Quicksilver's rotting teeth snapped open to bite into the Thing's neck, a thick, white strand of webbing shot out of the shadows.
The web-line slammed directly onto Quicksilver's face.
Peter's upgraded web formula boasted a twenty percent tensile strength increase over the original base formula. It did not snap. Quicksilver's extreme kinetic momentum slammed against the unbreakable tether. Physics took over.
With a sickening, wet tear, Zombie Quicksilver's body kept running forward, while his head was violently ripped from his shoulders, tumbling uselessly across the cracked pavement.
Peter dropped down from a ruined streetlamp, landing in a perfect crouch. His red and blue spider suit stood out like a pristine beacon in the gray ash.
"I have to say," Peter quipped, popping his knuckles, "watching zombies on TV is disgusting enough, but fighting them in person is definitely a one-star Yelp review."
In the back of the undead crowd, Zombie Iron Man paused, his rusted, blood-stained faceplate tilting upward. He stared at Peter, then at his drastically different uniform.
"Wait, is that... Spider-Man?" Zombie Iron Man rasped, the mechanical vocoder warped by blood in the circuitry. He noticed the heavy, bundled package strapped securely to Peter's back. "Did Reed's dimensional machine actually work?"
It was a success, and simultaneously, a complete failure.
A shadow fell over the battlefield. The ground beneath the zombie horde began to violently tremble.
The asphalt and concrete of the ruined street buckled, cracking apart as massive, invisible forces molded the terrain. Three towering, fifty-foot golems made entirely of jagged concrete, rebar, and crushed cars rose from the earth. The concrete giants swung their massive fists, mindlessly crushing entire rows of undead heroes, temporarily splitting the horde down the middle.
Doctor Doom descended gracefully from the sky, his boot thrusters burning cold and green. He ignored the carnage, walking directly through the chaos to stand before Reed and Susan.
Reed looked up, his exhausted eyes widening. "Victor... I truly didn't expect you to cross realities just to save me."
"Do not flatter yourself, Richards. Opportunities to witness your unmitigated folly in person are exceedingly rare," Doom said coldly. He raised a gauntlet, and a massive, swirling green portal tore open the fabric of reality behind him. "Doom have already destroyed the half-finished teleportation device at Baxter Tower. It was a chaotic mess. Meaningless. Now, follow me."
The three terrified civilians didn't hesitate; they sprinted through the portal. Magneto gave the zombie horde one last, hateful glare before following them. The Fantastic Four filed in right behind him.
Peter was the last one through. He adjusted the heavy, tarp-wrapped bundle strapped to his back. His superhuman strength, benchmarked as exceeding Captain America's strength-to-weight ratio, made carrying the weight trivial, but the implications of what he was holding made his stomach turn.
Doom snapped his armored fingers, issuing a final arcane command that commanded the concrete giants to fight until they crumbled. Then, the monarch of Latveria stepped through his own portal, letting it snap shut behind them.
They emerged into a sprawling, immaculate throne room. The air was sterile, quiet, and completely free of the stench of decay. The architecture was cold, gothic, and dripping with defensive armaments.
Johnny Storm immediately powered down, his flames dying off to reveal his blue uniform. He looked around the pristine castle, wildly confused.
"Dude," Johnny said, staring at the 616 Doctor Doom. "This isn't your universe. Why are you bothering to save Latveria here?"
In the original timeline of this doomed world, the zombified Reed Richards had immediately targeted Latveria for a feast. However, the timeline had fractured; warnings from the 616 universe had caused the undead Reed to pivot his attention toward dimensional travel instead, unintentionally sparing Doom's kingdom.
But it was only a matter of time. Once the undead stripped the rest of the planet down to the bone, they would inevitably lay siege to these castle walls.
"I am the King of Latveria," Doom stated, his voice echoing off the stone pillars. He did not look at Johnny. "And I will save the people of Latveria. The universe is irrelevant."
"It has nothing to do with ego, Johnny," Reed interrupted, pulling his scanner from his belt. "This is the very last bastion of human survival in this universe. If Doom's borders fall, this reality has absolutely zero hope left."
Johnny shrugged, conceding the point, and turned to Peter. "Hey, Spider-Man. Buddy. Glad you decided to tag along for the rescue mission. But seriously, what the hell are you carrying?"
Peter let out a heavy sigh. He carefully unslung the large bundle from his back and gently lowered it to the stone floor. He pulled back the tarp.
"Um. It's King T'Challa," Peter said softly.
The Fantastic Four recoiled. T'Challa was unconscious, wrapped in heavy medical bandages. His right arm and left leg had been surgically amputated.
"I saw Zombie Hank Pym sneaking out of a secure basement," Peter explained, keeping his voice steady to hide the fact that his fourth-wall awareness had tipped him off to this exact plotline. "So, I swung down to investigate. Found this poor guy strapped to a table. Pym was keeping him alive as a... as a late-night snack dispenser."
The room fell into a horrifying silence. High above the atmosphere, Magneto's secure orbital haven, Asteroid X, was slowly descending through the stratosphere, having received the Master of Magnetism's all-clear signal.
While the others tended to the broken King of Wakanda, the two brilliant, arrogant men at the center of the crisis began to speak.
"I have carefully analyzed the necrotic tissue samples," Reed said, typing rapidly on his wrist-mounted holographic display. "From a purely biological standpoint, this virus is entirely unsolvable. Once the cellular infection is complete, the process is absolute. It cannot be reversed. Even extreme self-healing factors, like Wolverine's, are completely overwhelmed."
Doom stood with his arms crossed, listening in silence.
"However," Reed continued, tapping the hologram to highlight a specific protein chain. "This state is theoretically capable of being neutralized mid-cycle. As long as I have access to a fully equipped laboratory and sufficient time, I can synthesize a neutralizing serum. It won't cure a zombie, but if injected before the transformation completes, it halts the necrosis entirely."
The heavy iron doors at the end of the hall hissed open.
Sitting atop a massive, imposing throne was the Doctor Doom of Earth-2149. He sat surrounded by glowing monitors and mystical tomes, tirelessly calculating probability algorithms to halt the apocalypse outside his walls.
The 616 Doctor Doom locked eyes with his dimensional counterpart. The air between the two iron-masked monarchs tasted of ozone and static, heavy with unspoken judgment.
The 2149 Doom slowly shifted his gaze from himself to Reed Richards.
"You heard what he said," 616 Doom stated coldly.
"You will have every resource you require, Richards," the 2149 Doctor Doom commanded, his voice identical in its metallic arrogance. "But Doom sincerely hope you are not as catastrophically foolish as the version of yourself that damned this universe. As for you..."
The 2149 Doom turned his masked face back to his 616 counterpart. "I trust that I am smart enough to know precisely what I am doing."
Beneath his iron mask, the Doctor Doom of Universe 616 frowned in deep, unbridled displeasure.
