Chapter 8 - Vivienne

While the soft, rhythmic breathing of the others filled the dark lab, I sat with my back against the cold brick wall. My eyes were heavy, but my mind wouldn't stop racing.

Suddenly, the air in front of me didn't just glow—it pulsed. A deep, violet window appeared, much darker than the usual blue ones. It made no sound, as if it didn't want the others to wake up.

[SECRET QUEST TRIGGERED: THE OBSERVER'S BURDEN]

[TYPE: SOLO / PSYCHOLOGICAL]

[OBJECTIVE: ANALYZE THE "CORE" OF YOUR TEAM.]

[TASK: Identify one hidden trauma or secret for each party member without asking them directly. Use your [Pattern Recognition] skill to observe their behavior, their belongings, or their reactions to the new world.]

[REWARD: SUB-CLASS UNLOCK — 'THE PUPPETEER' OR 'THE GUARDIAN']

[FAILURE: LOSS OF PARTY TRUST / -20% CHARISMA]

I stared at the screen. The System wasn't just asking me to fight; it was asking me to experiment on my friends. It wanted me to use my degree to deconstruct the people I cared about.

I looked over at Neveah. She was clutching her nursing bag even in her sleep. I noticed for the first time that her knuckles were bruised—not from a fight, but from nervous picking. Observation: High-functioning anxiety masked by a savior complex.

Then I looked at Nicholas. He was leaning against the door, eyes closed for a second. His baseball jersey had a name stitched on the inside collar that didn't match his: C. Chavez. It was an older shirt. A brother? A father? He wore it like armor. Observation: Identity tied to a legacy he's afraid to lose.

Finally, I looked at Grayson. Even while resting, his fingers were twitching, moving as if he were turning a wrench. He had a small, faded scar on his neck that looked like an old burn. Observation: A history of mechanical failure or a past accident that drives his need to "fix" everything.

[PROGRESS: 3/3 ANALYSIS COMPLETE]

The violet window flickered.

[ANALYSIS ACCEPTED. YOU HAVE SEEN BEYOND THE CHARACTER SHEETS.]

[CHOOSE YOUR REWARD PATH:]

PATH A: THE PUPPETEER.(Gain the ability to manipulate ally emotions to force them to fight harder, even if they are terrified.)

PATH B: THE GUARDIAN. (Gain the ability to absorb a portion of an ally's mental stress, keeping them sane at the cost of your own mental health.)

I looked at my sleeping friends. The System was offering me power, but it felt like a test of my own morality.

I stared at the violet screen, the cold glow reflecting in my eyes. The choice felt like the ultimate psychological test.

The Puppeteer offered control—the power to turn my friends into perfect soldiers. But that wasn't leadership; it was a violation. If I chose that, I wouldn't be Vivienne Romanov, Psychology student. I'd be just another monster in a gown.

I tapped The Guardian.

The violet window shattered into a thousand tiny sparks that flowed into my chest. It didn't feel like a power-up; it felt like a heavy stone settling in my heart. A sudden wave of Neveah's lingering fear and Grayson's hidden exhaustion washed over me, making my head throb.

[SUB-CLASS UNLOCKED: THE GUARDIAN]

[NEW SKILL: EMPATHIC SHIELD (PASSIVE)]

Effect: Automatically absorbs 15% of the mental fatigue and terror from nearby party members.

Cost: Vivienne's "Sanity Meter" will deplete faster during high-stress encounters.

[NOTIFICATION: YOUR BURDEN HAS INCREASED, BUT THE BONDS OF 'THE ALUMNI' ARE STRENGTHENED.]

I let out a long, shaky breath. My head felt heavy, but when I looked at Neveah, she seemed to stop twitching in her sleep. Her breathing became deeper, calmer. I was taking her nightmares, and in exchange, she was getting the rest she desperately needed.

"I can handle it," I whispered to the empty room. "I've spent four years studying the mind. What's a little extra stress?"

The sun rose, bleeding a dull orange through the cracks in the metal shutters. I didn't sleep at all, but the System's rest bonus kept me upright.

"Everyone up," I said, my voice slightly raspier than usual.

Nicholas jumped, his bat ready in a second. Grayson blinked his eyes open, looking surprisingly refreshed. "Whoa. I actually feel great. Best sleep I've had in weeks."

Neveah sat up, rubbing her eyes. "Me too. I usually have such bad dreams during finals, but I feel... peaceful."

They didn't know why, and I wasn't going to tell them. I just stood up and grabbed my reinforced thesis.

"Check your gear," I commanded. "We're heading for the roof. We need to see the layout of the campus and find out where the 'Core' of this system is located. Plus, the System mentioned a reward for reaching Level 5. We need to find some high-XP targets."

Grayson checked the saw blades on his buffer. Nicholas practiced a few swings. We were ready.

[RANK #38: THE ALUMNI (Rising due to 'Team Cohesion' bonus)]

As we opened the lab door, a new message flashed in the air—this one was blood-red.

[WORLD EVENT: THE FIRST HARVEST]

[OBJECTIVE: REACH THE CAMPUS BELL TOWER BEFORE NOON.]

[BOSS DETECTED: THE OVERSEER (LEVEL 10)]

"Level ten?" Nicholas swallowed hard. "We're only Level one and two."

"Then we better find a way to level up on the way to that tower," I said, checking the hallway. "Because if we don't reach it, I have a feeling the 'Harvest' isn't going to be fun for anyone."
