CHAPTER 31 — THE REST DAY
The next morning, the mansion was unusually quiet. The sun was gentle, painting gold across the high ceilings, but inside, the group moved slowly, exhausted from the previous day's grueling semi-finals. Everyone knew that today was their one day of rest before the finals—but no one could rest easily, not when Care's wellbeing was hovering over everyone's minds.
Cole sat in the living room, arms crossed, eyes fixed on Care as she stirred under the warm blanket on the couch. She had slept curled up, small and fragile, yet somehow exuding that silent strength that had always left him speechless.
"She looks like she's made of glass," he muttered under his breath, the tension in his jaw betraying the worry he couldn't voice fully.
Care woke slowly, blinking at the sunlight, her voice soft. "Morning…" She stretched gently, careful with her movements, still aware of the lingering aches from semi-finals.
"Morning," Cole replied, sitting closer. His eyes scanned her, lingering on the scraped elbows and knees she'd gotten from the tug of war. "How are you feeling?"
Care hesitated. "I'm fine… just tired. I'll rest more today."
But Cole knew better. The way she breathed, slight wheezing, faint pink in her cheeks, he knew she was pushing herself too much. He wanted to argue, to tell her to stop, but she gave him that faint smile, and he couldn't bring himself to scold her.
Meanwhile, Kevin and Ash were in the kitchen, laughing quietly over a simple breakfast. Kevin teased, "I still can't believe you ran that whole 1 km yesterday, Daisy… I mean Care. You guys are insane."
Ash smirked, pouring a glass of juice. "It's the Care effect. She makes everyone push their limits."
Lyra and Alex sat on the balcony, their heads close together. Alex was quietly adjusting Lyra's hair as she traced patterns on his hand with her finger. "You looked amazing yesterday," Lyra whispered. "So calm, so… focused."
Alex smiled softly, brushing sand from his sleeve. "You noticed."
Lyra leaned slightly closer, a blush creeping up her cheeks. "Of course I did."
Across the room, Daisy and Joong exchanged playful glances. Daisy nudged him lightly. "You're not just staring at me because I finished second, are you?"
Joong laughed, scratching the back of his neck. "Maybe a little. But mostly because I didn't expect you to push yourself like that. You were incredible."
Daisy's cheeks turned pink, but she smiled, leaning slightly into him. "Care should meddle more often," she whispered, earning a small laugh from the group nearby.
Ben and Nova, standing by the staircase, watched everyone quietly, sipping their drinks. They weren't romantically involved, but both felt a sense of responsibility over the group. Nova muttered to Ben, "We need to plan something… a proper outing. The beach tomorrow, maybe?"
Ben nodded. "Yeah… everyone needs it. And Care especially."
Cole, noticing Care had gotten up, followed her quietly to the living room, where everyone slowly gathered. Care, still cautious, smiled faintly. "Thanks for worrying," she whispered, "but I'm okay."
The day passed slowly, with laughter, teasing, and soft moments sprinkled everywhere. Care's coughs were occasional, but faint, mostly hidden. At night, everyone curled up in the living room—Care leaning against Cole, Lyra and Alex close together, Daisy and Joong quietly teasing each other, Ben and Nova sitting side by side, their attention split between conversation and keeping an eye on Care.
Around midnight, Care woke suddenly, her chest tight, a violent cough breaking through. Blood flecked her lips as she clutched the edge of the couch, breathing harshly. Lyra stirred immediately, alarmed.
"Care! Why are you doing this to yourself?" Lyra whispered sharply, kneeling beside her.
Care shook her head, weak but firm. "Lyra… shh… don't tell anyone. Not now. After finals… I'll get checked. I promise."
Cole stirred at the sound, but Lyra held him back with a glance. She understood—Care didn't want anyone to panic. She wrapped a hand gently around Care's shoulders, steadying her, while Cole's jaw tightened in frustration and fear.
Alex quietly grabbed a glass of water, gently offering it to Care. She drank slowly, the coughing easing slightly, the blood gone as quickly as it had appeared.
"You can't keep hiding this," Lyra whispered, voice tight. "We all care about you. We can't lose you because you're trying to protect everyone else."
Care shook her head, exhausted. "I'll manage… I have to. I'll be careful. But not now… just let me sleep."
Slowly, she sank back, leaning against Cole once more, who held her firmly, almost possessively, as if he could shield her from the world with his presence alone. Around them, the group settled again, whispers fading into soft laughter, teasing murmurs, and quiet moments of connection.
Alex rested a hand lightly on Lyra's arm, smiling softly. Daisy and Joong exchanged shy smiles across the room. Ben and Nova watched everyone, content in the simple presence of their friends.
Care's breathing steadied, soft and shallow, but she was still fragile. Cole tightened his hold subtly, whispering, "You're not alone. Not tonight, not ever."
The mansion was quiet now, except for soft laughter, whispered conversations, and the occasional cough from Care. Outside, the wind whispered against the windows, a faint promise of the beach outing tomorrow.
For the first time in a long while, Care allowed herself to feel the warmth of being surrounded, protected, and cared for—not as a warrior, but as someone fragile who deserved love and concern.
The group, too, felt it. For all the teasing, all the competitive fire, all the pride and rivalry—they were family now. And for Care, that mattered more than any trophy or victory ever could.
