Chapter 26 - The Alpha Killer

(Part 1)

The Blackwood compound had never been this crowded.

Wolves from different territories filled the massive courtyard, their banners hanging from wooden posts and stone walls.

Each banner carried a symbol.

Silver Ridge.

Iron Fang.

Red Valley.

Mooncrest.

Four packs that had suffered attacks from the council the previous night.

Now they had come together under one territory.

Under one call.

The call of the Moon Queen.

Ava stood on the high stone balcony overlooking the courtyard.

Below her, warriors trained together despite belonging to different packs.

It was chaotic.

But also powerful.

For the first time in centuries, wolves from rival territories were standing side by side.

And it was all happening because of her.

Ava exhaled slowly.

"This is a lot of responsibility."

Kael stood beside her.

"You asked for it."

"I didn't exactly expect an army."

Kael crossed his arms.

"You'll need one."

Ava glanced at him.

"You really think the council will attack directly?"

Kael didn't answer immediately.

Instead he watched the wolves below carefully.

Then he said quietly,

"They will send something worse than an army."

Ava frowned.

"What could be worse than an army?"

Before Kael could answer—

Ronan burst through the door behind them.

His face looked serious.

"Alpha."

Kael turned.

"What happened?"

Ronan stepped closer and lowered his voice.

"A scout just returned from the eastern mountains."

"And?"

"He found something."

Kael's eyes narrowed.

"What?"

Ronan looked at Ava briefly.

Then he said one word.

"Blood."

Ava's stomach tightened.

"What do you mean blood?"

"Lots of it."

Kael's voice turned cold.

"Explain."

Ronan took a breath.

"The scout found three dead alphas."

The air on the balcony suddenly felt heavier.

Ava blinked.

"Three?"

Ronan nodded.

"All killed the same way."

Kael's jaw tightened.

"How?"

"One strike."

Silence fell between them.

Then Damon's voice spoke from the doorway.

"The Alpha Killer."

Everyone turned.

Damon stepped into the room slowly.

His expression looked darker than usual.

Ava frowned.

"That sounds dramatic."

"It's not a title," Damon said.

"It's a warning."

Kael's eyes locked on him.

"You're sure?"

Damon nodded.

"Yes."

Ronan muttered under his breath.

"That's bad."

Ava looked between them.

"Okay, someone explain."

Kael finally spoke.

"Years ago, the council created a weapon."

"What kind of weapon?"

Damon answered.

"A wolf trained to kill alphas."

Ava raised an eyebrow.

"That sounds like every wolf."

"No," Damon said quietly.

"This one is different."

Ronan added,

"He hunts alphas specifically."

"And he never loses."

Ava crossed her arms.

"Great."

Damon continued.

"The council uses him when they want to destroy a pack without sending an army."

Kael looked toward the forest.

"And now he's here."

Ava blinked.

"Here?"

Ronan nodded slowly.

"If three alphas are already dead… he's moving through the region."

Ava felt a chill run down her spine.

"So he's hunting the packs that joined us."

"Yes," Damon said.

"Which means…"

Ava finished the sentence.

"He's coming for Blackwood."

No one argued.

The silence in the room confirmed it.

Kael finally moved away from the balcony.

"Call the war council."

Ronan nodded immediately and rushed out.

Within minutes, the large strategy hall inside the Blackwood compound filled with alphas.

Six pack leaders sat around the massive wooden table.

Each of them carried the scars of leadership.

Each of them looked uneasy.

Ava sat beside Kael at the head of the table.

Aldric from the Silver Ridge Pack leaned forward.

"We've all heard the stories."

Another alpha nodded.

"If the Alpha Killer is involved… we're already in trouble."

Ava frowned.

"You're making him sound unstoppable."

Damon leaned against the wall.

"That's because he almost is."

Ronan entered the room again.

"He just killed three alphas in one night."

The Iron Fang Alpha slammed his fist on the table.

"Then we hunt him first."

Kael shook his head.

"You won't find him."

"Why not?"

"Because he'll find us."

Ava rubbed her temples.

"This is encouraging."

The Mooncrest Alpha spoke next.

"What exactly are we dealing with?"

Damon answered calmly.

"His name is Varak."

The room went silent.

Even the alphas who had been speaking confidently looked uneasy.

Ava noticed immediately.

"Okay… clearly that name means something."

Aldric sighed.

"Varak used to be an alpha himself."

Ava blinked.

"Used to?"

"Yes."

Ronan continued the story.

"Years ago his pack was wiped out during a war."

"And?"

"The council found him afterward."

Damon finished the sentence.

"They turned him into a weapon."

Ava leaned back in her chair.

"That's horrible."

Kael nodded.

"They trained him for years."

"To do what?"

"Kill alphas."

Ava looked around the room.

"So this guy just walks into packs and kills the leaders?"

Damon shook his head.

"No."

"Then how?"

"He challenges them."

The Iron Fang Alpha frowned.

"A duel?"

"Yes."

"And they accept?"

Damon's voice was calm.

"They don't have a choice."

Ava looked confused.

"What do you mean?"

Ronan answered quietly.

"Varak carries the council's mark."

"And?"

"That mark means any alpha who refuses the challenge loses their title."

Ava stared at him.

"You're kidding."

"I wish I was."

The room fell silent again.

Kael stood up slowly.

"If Varak arrives here… he will challenge me."

Ava's heart skipped.

"And you'll fight him?"

Kael looked at her.

"Yes."

"Is that a good idea?"

"No."

"But it's the only one."

Ava crossed her arms.

"Or we could just not follow the council's ridiculous rules."

Aldric shook his head.

"If Kael refuses the duel, every pack here will lose legitimacy."

Ava frowned.

"So the council basically blackmails alphas into fighting him."

"Exactly."

Ronan sighed.

"And he's never lost."

Ava looked at Kael.

"Not even once?"

Kael's voice was calm.

"No."

The weight of that answer settled heavily over the room.

Ava's wolf stirred uneasily inside her mind.

Something about this situation felt wrong.

Dangerous.

But also…

Familiar.

A strange feeling crept into her chest.

Like the moon itself was warning her.

Suddenly—

A loud explosion echoed outside the compound.

Everyone in the room jumped to their feet.

Ronan rushed to the window.

His eyes widened.

"Well…"

"That didn't take long."

Kael walked to the window beside him.

Ava followed.

Smoke rose from the outer gates.

The massive iron doors had been blown open.

Warriors were already rushing toward the courtyard.

And standing calmly in the center of the road beyond the broken gates…

Was a single wolf.

Tall.

Broad.

Covered in dark armor.

He carried no weapons.

Because he didn't need them.

Even from a distance, Ava could feel something terrifying about him.

The warrior didn't move.

He simply stood there.

Waiting.

Ronan whispered quietly,

"That's him."

Kael's voice turned cold.

"Varak."

The Alpha Killer had arrived. 🌙

(Part 2)

Smoke drifted slowly through the broken gates of the Blackwood compound.

Warriors surrounded the courtyard instantly, their weapons drawn and eyes locked on the lone figure standing outside the walls.

But the stranger didn't move.

He simply stood there.

Waiting.

Ava felt the tension ripple through every wolf around her.

Fear.

Not panic.

But something close.

Ronan muttered beside her,

"Well… that's definitely him."

Kael stepped forward slowly.

His posture was calm.

Too calm.

The gathered alphas followed behind him as they walked toward the damaged gate.

Ava stayed close to Kael's side.

When they reached the entrance, the lone wolf finally lifted his head.

He was taller than most wolves.

Broad shoulders.

Dark hair that fell slightly over his face.

Scars covered his arms and neck.

But what stood out the most…

Were his eyes.

Cold.

Empty.

Like someone who had stopped caring about life a long time ago.

The courtyard fell completely silent as he stepped forward.

His boots crunched softly against the gravel ground.

He stopped about ten feet away from Kael.

His voice was deep and steady.

"Alpha Kael of the Blackwood Pack."

Kael didn't flinch.

"You already know who I am."

The man nodded slightly.

"Yes."

His gaze shifted briefly toward the gathered pack leaders.

Then toward Ava.

For a moment, something flickered in his eyes.

Recognition.

But it disappeared quickly.

He looked back at Kael.

"I came to issue a challenge."

Ronan whispered quietly,

"Right on schedule."

Kael crossed his arms.

"On whose authority?"

The man reached into his coat.

Several warriors immediately stepped forward, ready to attack.

But the stranger simply held up a small metal pendant.

A dark symbol was carved into its surface.

The council's mark.

A ripple of tension spread across the courtyard.

Several alphas muttered under their breath.

The man spoke calmly.

"By the authority of the Moon Council."

Kael's eyes darkened.

"I don't recognize their authority."

"That changes nothing."

Ava stepped forward.

"Actually, it does."

Everyone looked at her.

The stranger studied her carefully now.

His gaze lingered for a moment longer than necessary.

"You must be the Moon Queen."

Ava crossed her arms.

"That depends."

"On what?"

"On whether I feel like being polite."

Ronan quietly covered his mouth to hide a grin.

The stranger didn't react.

He simply nodded once.

"Your power awakened recently."

Ava raised an eyebrow.

"Word travels fast."

"The council felt it."

Kael stepped slightly in front of her.

"Enough."

His eyes locked on the stranger.

"You came here for something."

The man nodded.

"Yes."

Kael's voice dropped slightly.

"Then say it."

The stranger's voice echoed across the courtyard.

"I challenge you, Alpha Kael… for leadership of this territory."

A murmur spread through the gathered wolves.

The challenge had been spoken.

There was no taking it back.

Kael didn't hesitate.

"I accept."

Ava grabbed his arm immediately.

"Wait."

Kael glanced down at her.

"Ava—"

"No."

Her voice was firm.

"We're not doing this."

Ronan sighed quietly.

"I was wondering how long that would take."

Ava looked directly at the stranger.

"Varak, right?"

He nodded.

"Yes."

"Well, Varak…"

She stepped forward.

"I'm the reason you're here."

"Correct."

"Then challenge me."

The entire courtyard froze.

Kael immediately grabbed her wrist.

"Absolutely not."

Varak tilted his head slightly.

"You are not an alpha."

"I'm the Moon Queen."

"That title does not give you the right to answer a challenge."

Ava shrugged.

"Seems like a technicality."

Damon finally spoke from behind the crowd.

"The council's laws are very specific."

Ava looked back at him.

"You're not helping."

"I'm explaining."

Varak looked back at Kael.

"The challenge stands."

Kael nodded.

"It does."

Ava stepped in front of him.

"You're seriously going to fight this guy?"

Kael's voice was calm.

"Yes."

"Why?!"

"Because if I refuse…"

Ava finished the sentence.

"Every pack here loses their leadership."

Kael nodded once.

"Exactly."

Ava ran a hand through her hair.

"This is ridiculous."

Ronan shrugged.

"Welcome to wolf politics."

Varak removed his coat slowly.

His movements were calm and controlled.

Underneath the coat, his body was covered in old battle scars.

Dozens of them.

Some looked decades old.

Others looked recent.

Ava felt her wolf stir uneasily again.

Danger.

She whispered under her breath,

"I noticed."

Varak stepped into the center of the courtyard.

"First blood… or death."

The gathered alphas stepped back to create space.

Kael began removing his own jacket.

Ava grabbed his arm again.

"You don't have to do this alone."

Kael looked at her.

"I do."

"But—"

His voice softened slightly.

"Trust me."

Ava hesitated.

Then slowly let go.

But her heart was pounding.

Kael stepped forward.

The courtyard became a perfect circle of wolves.

Watching.

Waiting.

Varak rolled his shoulders once.

Then spoke calmly.

"You're the strongest alpha in the region."

Kael didn't respond.

Varak continued.

"That's why the council sent me."

Kael finally spoke.

"They're afraid."

Varak shook his head slightly.

"No."

"Then why send you?"

Varak's voice was almost emotionless.

"To prove a point."

Kael smirked faintly.

"And what point is that?"

Varak looked directly into his eyes.

"That no alpha can stand against the council."

The tension in the courtyard snapped.

Varak moved first.

He launched forward with terrifying speed.

Even the other alphas gasped.

But Kael reacted instantly.

Their fists collided with a thunderous crack.

The shockwave sent dust across the courtyard floor.

Ava's heart jumped into her throat.

Ronan whispered,

"Oh… this is going to be ugly."

Kael struck again.

Varak blocked.

Varak countered.

Kael dodged.

Their movements were almost too fast to follow.

Two alpha-level wolves fighting at full strength.

Each strike shook the ground.

Each blow could kill a normal wolf instantly.

The watching warriors stepped farther back.

No one wanted to be caught in the middle.

Varak suddenly shifted partially into his wolf form.

Claws extended.

He slashed toward Kael's chest.

Kael twisted aside but the claws still cut his shoulder.

Blood appeared instantly.

Ava gasped.

"Kael!"

Kael ignored the wound and slammed his fist into Varak's ribs.

The Alpha Killer barely reacted.

Instead he grabbed Kael's arm and threw him across the courtyard.

Kael crashed into a stone pillar.

The impact cracked the stone.

Several wolves shouted.

Ronan clenched his fists.

"Get up…"

Kael stood slowly.

Blood ran down his arm now.

But his eyes burned with determination.

Varak studied him carefully.

"You're stronger than the others."

Kael wiped the blood from his lip.

"I'm just getting started."

Varak nodded slightly.

"Good."

His eyes turned colder.

"Because I haven't even tried yet."

Ava felt her stomach twist.

The real fight had only just begun.

And suddenly—

Her wolf whispered something terrifying inside her mind.

He's not here to win.

Ava frowned.

"What do you mean?"

But her wolf didn't answer.

Instead—

The silver power inside Ava's chest began to stir again.

Because something about Varak felt…

Wrong.

And she was about to realize something shocking.

The Alpha Killer might not be the real enemy. 🌙
