Chapter 19 - New Direction

Ray woke to the sound of a firm knock on his door. The light through the narrow window was still early and pale, the kind that belonged to the first hours after a long night.

He rose, pulled on the darker of the new clothing sets, and opened the door. Lira stood in the corridor, posture neat as always, expression unreadable.

"Lady Seris wants you in her office," she said. "Now."

Ray locked the room behind him and followed her through the quiet upper halls. The Black Orchid felt different in the morning—less heat, more order, the staff moving with the efficient silence of people who had already begun the day's work.

They stopped at the familiar heavy door marked with the small black orchid. Lira knocked once, waited for the clear reply from inside, then opened it and stepped aside.

Ray entered alone.

Seris sat behind her desk, already dressed for the day, dark hair pinned with the same precision as always. A thin stack of papers rested at her elbow. She did not look up immediately, finishing whatever note she was writing before setting the pen aside and fixing her full attention on him.

"Sit."

He sat in the chair across from her.

Seris studied him for a moment in silence, eyes moving over his face and the clean lines of the new clothes.

"Lady Calira left satisfied," she said at last. "She also left a request for a possible second booking at a later date. That is useful."

Ray waited patiently for her to finish he knew Seris rarely wasted words on simple praise.

She leaned back slightly in her chair, fingers resting lightly on the desk.

"I have been considering the limits of your current role. Private bookings bring coin and reputation, but they are still reactive. Clients come to us. We provide. That model has value, yet it is not the only way a man of your… particular qualities can be put to use."

She paused, watching his reaction. Ray kept his expression even.

"There are women of standing who do not wish to be seen entering a place like the Black Orchid," Seris continued. "Some require discretion of a different kind. Others require instruction. A few require influence applied in quieter ways. Until now I have not had stock reliable enough to consider placing outside these walls for anything beyond simple escort work."

She reached into a drawer and placed a small sealed envelope on the desk between them.

"This is the first test of that idea. A minor noblewoman from the eastern district. Recently married. The match is politically convenient but personally cold. She has quietly requested help learning how to… manage her husband's attention. She will not come here. You will go to a private residence under escort, remain for the afternoon, and provide whatever practical instruction she requires."

Ray glanced at the envelope, then back at Seris.

"Instruction."

"Yes. Teaching. Demonstration. Whatever proves effective. She has already paid a substantial retainer for discretion and results. You will not discuss the Black Orchid by name. You will not leave the residence without the escort I provide. And you will return before evening."

Seris's gaze sharpened.

"This is not a standard booking. It is an experiment. If it goes well, there will be more of this kind of work—situations where your presence is useful beyond the bed. If it goes poorly, we return to the previous arrangement without further discussion. Do you understand the difference?"

"I understand."

"Good." She slid the envelope closer to him. "Lira will give you the address and the escort details downstairs. You leave within the hour. Do not disappoint the standard you have already set."

Ray took the envelope. The paper was thick, the seal unmarked.

Seris returned to her papers, the conversation clearly finished.

"Dismissed."

He stood, left the office, and found Lira waiting in the corridor exactly as before. She led him downstairs without comment, already holding a second, smaller note that contained the practical details of the assignment.

The morning air in the private courtyard felt cooler than the day before. A plain covered carriage waited near the side gate. Two silent female escorts in dark, unremarkable clothing stood beside it.

Ray climbed in. The door shut. The wheels began to turn.

The sealed envelope rested in his pocket, the collar remained locked at his neck, and for the first time since the auction the work Seris had given him would take place beyond the walls of the Black Orchid.
