Chapter 35 - Secrets and Schemes

The following morning, Chelsea arrived at school with a sense of unease she couldn't shake.

Vanessa's smirk from the hallway yesterday had planted a seed of dread in her mind. She had no doubt that the Queen of Drama was plotting something, and it wouldn't be small.

Mia spotted her near the lockers.

"Morning, nerd queen," Mia teased, nudging Chelsea.

Chelsea forced a small smile.

"Morning," she replied, though her eyes scanned the hallway constantly.

"Relax," Mia whispered. "It's just school."

Chelsea exhaled.

"Just school, she said. Yeah, right."

As soon as they reached the first corridor, Chelsea could hear whispers.

"Did you see what happened at the party?"

"Vanessa is furious."

"Adrian was totally protective of her."

Chelsea's jaw tightened.

She hated being the center of attention, especially when it came with Vanessa's scheming gaze lurking somewhere.

Vanessa arrived shortly after, making her entrance with her entourage as usual. She moved with confidence, flipping her hair dramatically, all while scanning the hallway for Chelsea.

Her eyes locked on Chelsea instantly.

Chelsea caught sight of her and immediately straightened, folding her arms.

Vanessa's smile was sharp, venomous even.

"Good morning," Vanessa said sweetly, though her words were anything but.

Chelsea replied calmly, almost smugly.

"Morning."

Vanessa stepped closer, her presence almost suffocating.

"You know, I almost admired your bravery yesterday," Vanessa said, leaning slightly toward Chelsea. "Almost."

Chelsea didn't flinch.

"And why almost?"

Vanessa's lips twitched into a smirk.

"Because today, you'll see just how dangerous I can be."

Before Chelsea could respond, Ryan and Cole appeared beside Vanessa.

Chelsea noticed the subtle glances between them. They were already scheming something, and it wasn't subtle.

During the first class, the whispers followed Chelsea everywhere.

Even though she answered every question flawlessly, her classmates couldn't stop staring, whispering about the drama from the party and how Adrian had been there, "protecting" her.

Mia leaned over from the desk behind her.

"You're basically a legend now," she whispered.

Chelsea rolled her eyes.

"Great. Just what I wanted."

By lunch, the tension had escalated.

Chelsea sat at her usual spot in the courtyard, quietly eating her sandwich, when Vanessa approached. This time, Vanessa's expression was different. She was calculated, predatory even.

"Alone again?" Vanessa asked, casually leaning on the table.

Chelsea looked up, unimpressed.

"Yes. And what's it to you?"

Vanessa's smile widened.

"You know, most people would run at the first sign of trouble. But not you."

Chelsea tilted her head.

"I'm not most people."

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

"Exactly. Which is why I like you. And also why I'm going to make your life miserable."

Chelsea swallowed, keeping her calm.

"I'm not intimidated."

Vanessa's smirk returned.

"You should be."

Just as Vanessa was about to step closer, a shadow fell over the table.

Adrian.

He didn't say a word. He didn't threaten. He just stood there, silent and imposing.

Vanessa froze for a moment, realizing that Chelsea wasn't alone.

Adrian's presence was enough to make her pause.

"You're protective," Vanessa said, her voice cold.

Adrian didn't answer. His eyes were fixed on her, calm and unreadable.

Vanessa's friends shifted uncomfortably.

"Well, this isn't over," Vanessa hissed before walking away, flanked by Ryan and Cole.

Chelsea exhaled slowly.

"Thanks," she whispered, almost shyly.

Adrian finally looked at her, his expression unreadable.

"You don't need to thank me," he said softly.

Chelsea frowned.

"Then why?"

Adrian smirked faintly.

"Because it had to be done."

And with that, he turned and walked away, leaving Chelsea frustrated, confused, and oddly aware of the tension simmering between them.

After school, Chelsea found herself in the library, trying to bury herself in books to escape the gossip and Vanessa's schemes.

Her thoughts wandered to Adrian constantly—how he acted calm no matter what, how he protected her without admitting anything, and how much she wanted to understand him.

Mia arrived shortly after, plopping into the chair beside her.

"You're obsessed," Mia said, smirking.

Chelsea groaned.

"Not obsessed. Just… frustrated."

"Sure, frustrated," Mia said knowingly. "You can't even admit you're intrigued by him."

Chelsea glared.

"Shut up."

Mia laughed.

"You're ridiculous. Admit it. You like him."

Chelsea buried her face in her hands.

"Maybe. Maybe not. None of your business."

Mia grinned.

"Exactly what I thought. But mark my words—things are about to get crazy."

Chelsea peeked through her fingers, sighing.

"More than they already are?"

Mia nodded.

"You haven't even seen the tip of Vanessa's plan yet."

Chelsea leaned back in her chair, realizing that this slow-burning tension with Adrian, the gossip, and Vanessa's plotting was only getting started.

And she knew one thing for sure: Adrian would never tell her how he really felt.

But that didn't stop her from wanting him to.
