Chapter 21 - The First Challenge

The next morning at Riverview Academy, Chelsea felt an odd mixture of dread and determination. Vanessa had made her presence known yesterday, and it was clear she wasn't the kind of girl to let anything go. Her gang of loyal followers lingered in the hallways, eyes sharp, waiting for any misstep.

Chelsea tightened the strap of her bag. She wasn't about to let anyone intimidate her, no matter how rich, popular, or cunning they were.

First period was chemistry, and Adrian was seated two rows behind her. She could feel his presence, dark eyes scanning the class occasionally, smirk permanently in place. Vanessa was at the front of the room, whispering something to her group, but she kept sneaking glances at Adrian and, every so often, Chelsea caught the smirk that came when he noticed her noticing him.

Chelsea rolled her eyes. Why does he have to be so… infuriatingly perfect?

During the lab session, Vanessa tried her first move. She leaned over Adrian's station, laughing softly as if something was the funniest thing in the world. Adrian glanced at her, smirked, and whispered something Chelsea couldn't hear. Vanessa giggled, throwing a glance at Chelsea a challenge in her eyes.

Chelsea's hand tightened around her test tube. "Focus," she muttered to herself.

Vanessa's followers whispered, nudging each other, clearly daring Chelsea to react. But Chelsea didn't. She focused on the experiment with the precision of a surgeon, ignoring the whispered insults. Her hands moved deftly, mixing chemicals with perfect care, while Vanessa's smirk slowly faded frustrated that her usual tactics weren't working.

Adrian, of course, noticed everything. When Vanessa finally moved away, he leaned toward Chelsea, his dark eyes glinting. "Impressive," he murmured, voice low. "Most girls would crumble. You didn't even flinch."

Chelsea's face burned, partly from the compliment, partly from the proximity. "I… I wasn't even looking," she said quickly, turning back to her experiment.

"Sure," he said, smirk returning. "Keep telling yourself that."

By lunch, the hallway was buzzing. Vanessa had gathered a small group of girls, all carefully blocking Chelsea's path to the cafeteria.

"Well, well," Vanessa said, tilting her head, blonde hair falling perfectly over one shoulder. "Look who thinks she can just walk through the school and steal attention."

Chelsea's jaw clenched. "I don't steal anything."

Vanessa smiled, all honeyed charm. "Not yet. But you will."

Before Chelsea could respond, Adrian appeared, dark eyes narrowing. He leaned casually against the lockers, arms crossed. "I don't think so," he said quietly. "Step aside."

Vanessa's smile faltered. Chelsea's heart thudded. Adrian wasn't just teasing anymore he was serious.

The group slowly dispersed, muttering under their breath. Vanessa shot Chelsea one last glare before striding away, clearly planning her next move.

After school, the student council announced the picnic and party the perfect setting for tension, jealousy, and subtle flirtation. Chelsea groaned. Vanessa would surely try to dominate the event, using her wealth and influence to shine in front of Adrian.

Chelsea, however, had a plan. She wasn't just a nerd she was clever, strategic, and she knew Adrian's teasing meant he was paying attention. This would be her chance to hold her ground, not just academically, but socially.

Adrian appeared at the hallway entrance, dark eyes locking on hers. "Looks like things are about to get… interesting," he said, smirking.

Chelsea glared, cheeks hot. "You mean… ridiculous?"

"Maybe," he murmured, voice low, leaning just slightly closer. "Or maybe… fun."

Fun. Right. Chelsea thought bitterly. Because with him, nothing is ever simple.

That night, as Chelsea prepared for the picnic, she couldn't stop thinking about the day. Vanessa, the gang, Adrian's teasing, and the subtle protective moments it was all a storm inside her. A storm that made her heart beat faster, cheeks burn, and mind spin.

And she hated that she couldn't stop thinking about Adrian.
