Chapter 10 - Watching From Afar

The morning market was alive with the chatter of vendors and the scent of fresh produce, mingled with the delicate fragrance of flowers from Lian Hua's shop. She had just finished arranging a new bouquet of crimson lotuses when she felt, almost instinctively, that someone was watching her.

She glanced toward the street.

Zhen Wei stood across the road, leaning slightly against a lamppost, his eyes fixed on her. Not a passerby, not a casual observer—he was studying her, every movement, every gesture.

Her heart skipped, a flutter of nerves and something darker she didn't want to name. She looked away, focusing on the bouquet, but she could feel his gaze lingering.

Then a young man approached her shop, smiling. "Excuse me, miss, could I get some of your lotuses for my girlfriend?"

Lian Hua smiled politely, beginning to prepare the flowers. But she noticed Zhen Wei's eyes narrow ever so slightly, a shadow of something possessive flickering across his features.

"You…" he murmured under his breath, the words almost lost in the bustle of the market, "she's mine."

She felt her chest tighten at the intensity in his voice, even though she couldn't see his full expression from her angle. A strange mix of unease and… thrill coursed through her.

The young man left with the bouquet, and Zhen Wei crossed the street, appearing in the shop doorway almost silently. "You handled that well," he said softly, though his eyes betrayed a storm beneath the calm tone.

"Handled what?" she asked cautiously, heart racing.

"The distraction," he said, a faint smirk tugging at his lips. "But I don't like it when others… take your attention."

Lian Hua's cheeks flushed. "It was just flowers," she murmured.

"Perhaps," he said, stepping closer, letting his presence fill the space beside her. "But even small things matter."

For a long moment, silence stretched between them. Lian Hua could feel the unspoken tension—something intoxicating, something dangerous. The market outside buzzed with life, but inside the shop, the world seemed to narrow to him and her.

Finally, he straightened, voice softer, almost tender. "I'll leave you to your work. But know this… I notice everything about you."

And with that, he turned and disappeared into the street, leaving behind a quiet warmth and the faint scent of his cologne lingering in the air.

Lian Hua's fingers hovered over the petals of the crimson lotuses. She realized, with a mix of fear and fascination, that he wasn't just watching her… he was a storm she couldn't escape, and maybe she didn't want to.
