Chapter 6 - The Weight Of An Empty Space

"What happened?" Lily asked.

The idea flashed his head.

"No, no, sh-sh-she probably just did her teleport thingy again."

"If that's the case why are you panicking and saying no?"

"Uhm, cuz it can't be what I think it is!"

"Zane, what did you do?" She started getting concerned.

"Mom!" He ignored the question. Prancing about the house with speed.

"Mom, it's not funny, whoosh back to us or something." No response.

"She won't just leave, Zane you know something and that scares me."

"Shut up! Ok?" He was getting agitated.

"I'm sorry, I'm sorry." He hugged her before collapsing to the ground, tears running down his cheeks.

"It can't be," he said.

He gulped.

"The past few days, something's been happening to me, and now mom isn't even here to explain it to me." He sat up and leaned against her legs, hands deliberately away from her. She began playing with his hair.

"Things I touch have been disappearing, I've been writing them off as coincidences, till today when my soap disappeared from one hand and appeared in the other immediately, but the soap felt off, like it was altered. That's why I took a stroll, and then a bloody tsunami happened which isn't even supposed to be possible."

"Damn Zane, well if you made mom disappear, she's strong, she stopped the tsunami before it started, she should be back any moment now."

"I don't think so, something in me knows she's not coming back soon." He dropped his hands.

Lily stepped back.

"What'd you mean? Is there anything that hasn't come back?"

"Some things I've touched have come back in pieces. But this is the first life."

"Don't put it that way, mom would be back soon." Now panicking.

He looked at her and tried to hug her again, she stepped back three paces, now scared.

"Lily?"

"Don't come any closer Zane."

"What have you done with our mom?"

"I, I haven't done anything, I don't know ok." He began crying.

"It just happens, she said Dad left to protect us, where's he? Perhaps he knows what to do." He got up and took a step closer to Lily.

"Stay away from me Zane, I'm warning you." She picked up the nearest thing she could find, a pillow.

He looked at her, seeing the fear in her eyes, he left the house with nothing but the jacket he had on him.

I feel bad for him though, having to lose your mom this way, it's terrifying. Let's just keep our fingers crossed.

After an hour, he came back home with gloves on that he bought from the store. But there was a cop car in front of his house. He entered to see Lily surrounded by neighbors and cops.

"Mr. Dagonet, welcome. Please have your seat, we're here for your missing mom's case."

He looked at Lily.

"She called us, told us you hadn't seen your mom after the alarm, and you ran out to look for her. Clearly, you didn't find her."

He still stood looking puzzled before eventually sitting beside his sister. He held her hand, she was about pulling away with fear but she noticed the gloves.

"I, we don't know what happened or where she went." He managed to say.

"Would you please follow us to the station to-"

All phones began buzzing again. Tsunami alert.

"What is happening, the last tsunami we've ever seen before today was seven hundred years ago." A neighbor said.

He grabbed his sister, knowing it wasn't a normal tsunami and dashed into the car. This wave wasn't taking ten minutes to hit, it was going to hit in a matter of seconds.

He began driving inland as fast as he could, but it seems the laws of reality were against Eldermere that night. They were hit by an earthquake causing the car to swivel into a tree.

They both woke up to the car getting filled with water.

"Zane, Zane!!"

He took off his gloves and began touching the door, expecting it to disappear. Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way. They kicked, struggled, tried every way to escape. The car was already full with water, his sister's lungs could hold only so much air. She was giving in.

He kept hitting and pushing, doing what he could, all four doors were jammed. He looked to see his sister floating, she'd passed out.

He looked at his hands, focused and placed them on the door. Nothing. Just then, a figure made of pure light, shaped like a woman, appeared in front of the car.

"Mom?" He thought to himself.

She pointed her arm at the car, and all the water in it began to vaporize at an insane speed. The water around her and the car also gave way, almost as if it was avoiding them. She opened the door and took his sister out, and began to fly. A tether of light extended to Zane and wrapped around him, pulling him with them as she took them to the nearest skyscraper.

He looked at her. She was shorter than his mom, her aura was pure white, she was covered in it. She was literally light itself.

"Sleep." That was the last word he heard before he blanked.
