Chapter 29 - Chapter 28 - The Return

Age 24 — Road to the Blood Domain — Dawn

The gates of the Neutral Zone closed behind them.

Gu Chen walked at the center of the delegation, flanked by Gu Lian and Gu Mei. Warriors surrounded them. No one spoke.

The sky changed as they traveled. Blue gave way to gray. Gray gave way to red. The weight returned to Gu Chen's chest, heavier than before.

The Soldier: Home.

The King: Not home. Territory.

The Beggar: Cage.

The Monk: Familiar.

Gu Chen touched the objects hidden in his robe.

Pendant. Token. Hourglass.

Three secrets. Three possibilities.

---

Day three

They stopped to rest.

Gu Mei sat beside him, away from the others.

"You're quiet. More than usual."

Gu Chen said nothing.

She glanced at him. "You're thinking about them, aren't you? The things you collected."

The Soldier: She knows.

The King: She watches.

The Beggar: She's still here.

Gu Chen met her gaze.

"You notice everything."

Gu Mei smiled. It was a tired smile. "I have to. In this family, noticing is survival."

The Orphan: Like us.

The Beggar: Like always.

The Soldier: Like her.

Gu Chen nodded.

"What do you see?"

Gu Mei was quiet for a moment. Then: "I see someone who's collecting weapons. Not swords — options. Favors. Debts." She met his eyes. "I see someone preparing for a war no one else knows is coming."

The King: She's smart.

The Soldier: She's dangerous.

The Beggar: She's right.

Gu Chen did not confirm or deny.

Gu Mei stood. "Whatever you're planning, be careful. My uncle isn't blind. And he's not patient."

She walked away.

---

Day five

The Blood Domain.

Red sky. Black stone. Heavy air.

Gu Chen breathed deeper, forcing his body to accept the weight.

Gu Lian appeared at his side.

"We're back."

Gu Chen nodded.

"Whatever happened in the Neutral Zone — whatever deals you made — they'll find out eventually." Her voice was low. "Be ready."

The Soldier: She's warning.

The King: She's loyal.

The Beggar: She's still here.

Gu Chen looked at her.

"I'm always ready."

Gu Lian held his gaze for a moment. Then she nodded and walked away.

---

That night — Gu Clan Compound

Gu Tianxiong summoned him immediately.

The throne room was the same — dark, cold, heavy. His father sat on the black stone throne, expression unreadable.

"The gathering is over."

Gu Chen said nothing.

"You met with Mo Yu. Twice." Gu Tianxiong's voice was flat. "You met with Shi Yuan. Once."

The Soldier: He knows everything.

The King: Of course.

The Beggar: He's been watching.

Gu Tianxiong leaned forward. "What did they offer you?"

The Orphan: Tell him.

The Soldier: Lie.

The King: Truth — but not all.

The Monk: Choose.

Gu Chen met his father's gaze.

"Mo Yu offered a truce. One year. In exchange for a favor."

Gu Tianxiong nodded slowly. "And Shi Yuan?"

"A gift. An hourglass. He said it would show me how much time I have left."

Gu Tianxiong's eyes narrowed. "Show me."

Gu Chen reached into his robe. Pulled out the hourglass.

Gu Tianxiong studied it. Then he laughed. It was a cold sound.

"The Shi Clan. Always playing their games." He handed it back. "Keep it. It might be useful."

The Soldier: He let us keep it.

The King: He's not threatened.

The Beggar: Or he's waiting.

Gu Chen tucked it away.

Gu Tianxiong waved a hand. "Go. Rest. There will be more missions soon."

Gu Chen bowed.

Turned to leave.

"Boy."

He stopped.

"You're becoming interesting. That's dangerous."

Gu Chen walked out.

---

One week later

The missions resumed.

Mo Clan skirmishes. Territory disputes. Assassinations that no one spoke about. Gu Chen moved through them like a ghost, efficient, silent, lethal.

His reputation grew.

But something had changed.

He was not just a weapon anymore. He was collecting. Planning. Waiting.

The Soldier: For what?

The King: For the right moment.

The Beggar: For the trap to spring.

The Monk: For the choice.

Gu Chen did not know.

But he could feel it coming.

---

Two weeks

Gu Mei found him at training.

"You've changed."

Gu Chen paused mid-form.

"How?"

"You're... calmer. More focused." She tilted her head. "Like you've decided something."

The Orphan: Have we?

The Soldier: Not yet.

The King: Soon.

The Beggar: Maybe.

Gu Chen met her gaze.

"Maybe I have."

Gu Mei studied him for a long moment. Then she nodded slowly.

"Good. Whatever it is, I hope it works." She turned to leave. Stopped. "And Gu Chen?"

He waited.

"If you need someone to watch your back — really watch it — I'm here."

She walked away.

Gu Chen watched her go.

The Orphan: Another one.

The Soldier: Another ally.

The King: Another thread.

The Beggar: Another chance for betrayal.

The Monk: Another choice.

He touched the pendant.

Then the token.

Then the hourglass.

Three objects. Three promises. Three people who had offered something.

He did not know which would last.

But for the first time, he had options.

And options meant he could choose.

---

Outside the compound walls

Su Wan stood at the edge of the Blood Domain.

Her hand pressed against black stone.

It cracked.

"Five down," she whispered.

"Four to go."

She looked toward the compound, toward a small window where a figure stood motionless.

"He's collecting allies now," she breathed. "Preparing."

The wind moved through dead air.

"He's becoming what they fear."

She did not move for a long time.
