Chapter 17 - Chapter 16 - The Stranger's Name

Age 22 — Crimson Cloud Sect — Senior Inner Disciple Quarters

Three days since the judgment.

Gu Chen's new room had walls. A door that locked. A window that faced the mountains instead of a stable wall. It was larger than the old one, cleaner, quieter.

He had not slept.

The Beggar: Waiting for the knife.

The Soldier: Waiting for the enemy.

The King: Waiting for information.

A knock.

Not Liang. Heavier. Authoritative.

Gu Chen opened the door.

Elder Xu.

She stood in the hallway, arms folded, eyes cold.

"You've attracted attention."

Gu Chen said nothing.

"The wrong kind of attention." She stepped inside without waiting for permission. "There are people asking about you. People who don't belong here. People who make even me uncomfortable."

The King: The stranger.

The Soldier: She knows.

Elder Xu turned to face him.

"I don't care what you are. I don't care where you came from. But I care about my sect." Her voice dropped. "If you bring destruction to these gates, I will remove you myself. Permanently."

Gu Chen met her gaze.

"I understand."

Elder Xu studied him for a long moment.

Then she left.

The door closed.

The Beggar: Friendly place.

The Soldier: She's scared.

The King: Good. Scared people make mistakes.

---

That afternoon

The stranger was waiting.

Not in the shadows this time. In plain sight. Standing at the edge of the training ground, watching disciples practice.

Watching Gu Chen.

Gu Chen walked toward him.

The stranger smiled. Same smile. Same hunger.

"You've done well."

Gu Chen stopped five paces away. Close enough to see. Far enough to react.

"What do you want?"

The stranger laughed. "Straight to the point. I like that." He stepped closer. "I'm here to deliver a message."

"From who?"

The stranger reached into his robe. Pulled out a scroll. Old. Sealed with wax. A symbol Gu Chen did not recognize.

"Your birth father wants to meet you."

The Soldier: Trap.

The Beggar: Obvious trap.

The King: But why?

Gu Chen stared at the scroll.

"I don't have a father."

"Everyone has a father." The stranger tossed the scroll. It landed at Gu Chen's feet. "Yours just happens to be the leader of the Gu Clan. One of the Eight."

The King: Blood Clan.

The Beggar: Abandonment #6. Too early.

The King: Or the perfect time.

Gu Chen did not pick up the scroll.

"Why now?"

The stranger tilted his head. "Because you've stopped being invisible. The sect knows. The disciples know. Soon the whole region will know." He paused. "The Gu Clan doesn't claim trash. But they're very interested in weapons."

Weapon.

The word hit like a blade.

The Orphan: That's all we are to them.

The Beggar: That's all we've ever been.

The stranger turned to leave.

"Read the scroll. Don't read it. Come or don't. It doesn't matter." He glanced back. "The clan always gets what it wants. Eventually."

He walked away.

Gu Chen stood alone.

The scroll lay at his feet.

He did not pick it up.

---

That night

He sat on his bed, staring at the wall.

The scroll was on the table. He had picked it up eventually. He did not remember doing it.

The King: Open it.

The Monk: Knowledge is not always power. Sometimes it's chains.

The Soldier: Open it or burn it. Choose.

Gu Chen broke the seal.

The scroll unfurled.

One sentence.

"Come home. Or we'll come to you."

No signature. No date. No warmth.

Just a threat wrapped in silk.

The Beggar: That's family.

The Orphan: That's not family.

The Soldier: That's a trap.

The King: That's opportunity.

The Monk: That's a choice.

Gu Chen looked out the window.

The mountains were dark. Somewhere beyond them, the Gu Clan waited.

Somewhere closer, the stranger watched.

Somewhere even closer, Liang was probably worrying.

---

The next morning

Liang found him at breakfast.

"You look terrible."

Gu Chen said nothing.

Liang sat across from him. "Everyone's talking about you. Senior inner disciple. Elder Xu's favorite. The ghost who killed Luo Heng with words." He lowered his voice. "They're scared of you now."

The Soldier: Good.

The King: Useful.

Gu Chen looked at Liang.

"You should stay away from me."

Liang blinked. "What? Why?"

"Because people who stay near me get used. Or killed. Or both."

Liang was quiet for a moment. Then he shook his head.

"I'm not going anywhere."

The Orphan: Loyal.

The Beggar: Stupid.

The Soldier: Useful.

Gu Chen did not argue.

---

One week later

The stranger appeared again.

Same place. Same smile. Same hunger.

"You haven't left."

Gu Chen said nothing.

"The invitation still stands. The clan is patient." The stranger stepped closer. "But patience has limits. Eventually, they'll stop asking and start collecting."

Gu Chen met his gaze.

"Who are you?"

The stranger smiled wider.

"My name is Gu Tianming. I'm your uncle." He paused, letting the words settle. "Your father's younger brother. Sent to watch you. To report on you. To decide if you're worth bringing home."

The Soldier: Family.

The Beggar: Family left him on steps.

The King: Information.

Gu Chen's core pulsed. Warning. Recognition. Something else.

"Why should I believe you?"

Gu Tianming reached into his robe. Pulled out a small object. Tossed it.

Gu Chen caught it.

A jade pendant. Broken. Clean break, like someone had snapped it on purpose.

"Your mother gave that to your father. He broke it the day she left." Gu Tianming's voice was flat. "He kept the pieces. I took one. To show you, when the time was right."

Gu Chen stared at the pendant.

The Orphan: It's real.

The Beggar: It's a prop.

The King: It's proof.

He did not know which was true.

Gu Tianming turned to leave.

"Think about it. But not too long." He glanced back. "The clan is patient. But I'm not."

He vanished into the crowd.

---

That night

Gu Chen sat alone, the broken pendant in one hand, the scroll in the other.

The voices argued.

The Orphan: They sent someone. They're reaching out.

The Beggar: They're reaching out to take, not to give.

The Soldier: Either way, we go. Face them. Learn the truth.

The King: Either way, we prepare.

The Monk: Either way, we choose.

Gu Chen looked at the pendant.

His mother's face — he did not remember it. He had never seen it. But something in his chest ached when he looked at the broken jade.

The Universe: Still silent. But closer.

He made his choice.

He would stay. For now. He would train. For now. He would learn everything he could about the Gu Clan.

And when the time came — when they came to "collect" him — he would be ready.

Not as property.

As something else.

---

Outside the sect walls

Su Wan stood in shadow.

Her hand pressed against stone.

It cracked.

"Five down," she whispered.

"Four to go."

She looked toward the small window where a single lamp burned.

"He knows now," she breathed. "About the clan. About his father. About everything."

The wind carried her words away.

"He's going to stop running."

She did not move for a long time.
