Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: Evolution Begins

The library lobby remained silent except for the steady sound of rain striking the shattered doorway. The mutated beast lay motionless on the marble floor, its blood slowly mixing with the water seeping in from outside. Cassian Vale stood over the corpse, breathing in measured rhythms as his body adjusted to the sudden surge of power from leveling up.

Energy flowed through him differently now.

His muscles felt lighter. His senses sharper. The air itself seemed clearer, as though invisible fog had lifted from his perception.

The system interface hovered calmly in front of his vision.

[Level: 3]

[Experience: 0 / Next Level]

[Stat Points Available: 10]

[Inventory System Unlocked]

Cassian stepped away from the creature and carefully avoided the blood pooling across the floor. He focused on the new notification.

"Inventory," he said quietly.

A translucent grid opened in his vision.

[Inventory Capacity: 20 Slots]

Empty squares filled the display, each one faintly glowing.

Cassian raised an eyebrow.

"So I can store items in some kind of dimensional space."

He glanced at the beast's corpse.

If the system allowed storage of materials, this could be useful.

But looting a dead monster in the middle of chaos felt secondary to survival.

Outside the library, distant screams echoed across campus again. The sound was closer now. Whatever was happening in Ravencrest had spread far beyond a single courtyard encounter.

Cassian moved toward the entrance carefully and looked out through the broken frame.

The fractured sky above the city was dimmer than before, but the blue cracks still pulsed faintly in the clouds. In the distance, several buildings glowed with unnatural light.

And near the edge of the campus grounds, something else was forming.

The air shimmered.

Mana condensed in a specific area between two administrative buildings. It swirled in a tight spiral, growing denser with each passing second.

Cassian narrowed his eyes.

[Warning]

[High Mana Concentration Detected]

[Spatial Distortion Imminent]

He felt it too now.

The ground beneath his feet vibrated faintly.

The swirling mana above the campus began to take shape. It compressed inward, forming a circular distortion in the air.

A tear.

Cassian's expression hardened.

"So that's what the system meant by dungeon formation."

The spiral expanded suddenly, and the air split open with a sharp crack.

Inside the distortion was not darkness, but something else entirely.

A corridor made of stone.

The entrance resembled an ancient archway carved from blackened rock, suspended within the air itself. Flickers of blue energy surrounded its edges like a protective barrier.

The system chimed again.

[Dungeon Identified]

[Type: Evolution Trial]

[Difficulty: Low]

Cassian exhaled slowly.

A dungeon.

In most fantasy settings, dungeons meant monsters, resources, and rewards.

But they also meant danger.

And if this one had formed on campus, it would inevitably attract creatures from the surrounding area.

The mutated beast behind him suddenly began dissolving.

Cassian turned just in time to see its body break apart into particles of light.

The fragments lifted into the air and flowed toward him like a glowing stream.

The system responded immediately.

[Dungeon Core Residue Absorbed]

[Inventory Updated]

[Monster Materials Stored]

Cassian blinked.

"So killing inside the dungeon boundary gives rewards."

That confirmed his suspicion.

He glanced toward the newly formed archway across the campus lawn.

Students who were still alive were gathering at a distance, pointing and shouting in confusion.

Some were filming with their phones, though most devices were likely already malfunctioning due to the mana wave.

Cassian frowned.

If people entered blindly, they would die.

The system interface expanded again.

[Dungeon Entry Recommended for Rapid Growth]

[Warning: Increased Threat Level Inside]

Cassian folded his arms.

He could feel it clearly now.

The dungeon radiated dense mana. Far stronger than the surrounding environment.

Entering it would accelerate his development.

But rushing in without preparation would be reckless.

He looked down at his hands.

Mana still lingered inside him, but not much.

[Mana: 4 / 60]

The level-up had increased his total mana capacity.

That alone was significant.

He opened the stat interface.

[Strength: 8]

[Health: 10]

[Agility: 9]

[Mana: 12]

[Stamina: 11]

The numbers felt low compared to fictional heroes, but Cassian knew progression systems were exponential. Early improvements mattered most.

He allocated his stat points carefully.

He added four points to Mana.

Three to Agility.

Three to Health.

The system processed the allocation.

[Stats Updated]

[Mana Capacity Increased]

[Agility Improved]

[Health Improved]

Cassian felt the changes immediately.

His energy pool expanded, and his movements felt more responsive.

Good.

Now he had a foundation.

A faint glow began forming near the dungeon entrance.

Cassian noticed movement inside the archway.

Shadows.

Something was approaching from within.

The dungeon was not empty.

He adjusted his stance and created a small mana spike in preparation.

This time he kept the construct minimal.

Efficiency mattered more than complexity.

[Mana Construct Activated]

The spike formed quickly.

Less mana consumed.

Sharper design.

Outside the library, a group of students ran toward the archway, drawn by curiosity or desperation.

Cassian stepped forward and raised his voice.

"Stop! Don't go near that thing!"

Several of them hesitated.

One boy pointed at the glowing structure.

"It looks like a portal!"

"It's not a game," Cassian replied firmly. "Something is forming inside it."

As if responding to his words, a low growl echoed from within the dungeon corridor.

A pair of glowing eyes appeared in the archway's darkness.

Cassian's expression tightened.

The first dungeon monster was arriving.

The creature stepped into view.

It resembled a wolf, but its body was thinner and its limbs elongated unnaturally. Blue veins pulsed beneath translucent skin, and faint mana sparks flickered around its jaws.

[Dungeon Creature Identified]

[Level: 4]

Cassian assessed it quickly.

Stronger than the previous beast.

But not overwhelmingly so.

The wolf crouched and prepared to leap.

Cassian reacted instantly.

Arcane Pulse activated.

The mana spike shot forward in a straight line and struck the creature mid-jump.

The impact staggered it, but it remained upright.

Cassian frowned slightly.

It was tougher than the library monster.

The wolf recovered quickly and charged out of the dungeon toward the group of students.

Panic erupted.

Cassian stepped between them without hesitation.

He created two small mana plates this time.

Not large shields.

Compact barriers designed to deflect rather than absorb.

The wolf lunged.

Arcane Pulse triggered again.

The spike hit the creature's side while the barriers redirected its momentum.

The wolf crashed into the ground, injured but alive.

Cassian didn't waste the opportunity.

He formed a second spike immediately.

Focused.

Dense.

Efficient.

[Mana Remaining: 18 / 60]

The spike struck directly through the wolf's chest.

The creature convulsed once before collapsing.

Silence followed.

Then the system chimed again.

[Dungeon Creature Defeated]

[Experience Gained]

[Level Up]

Cassian felt another surge of energy.

His body strengthened again.

The students stared at him in shock.

One of them whispered, "He just killed that thing…"

Cassian didn't respond immediately.

His eyes remained fixed on the dungeon archway.

Because inside it, more glowing eyes were now visible.

The dungeon had only begun to open.

And Ravencrest City was about to learn what survival truly meant.
