Harry looked at Raven and said, "Raven, do you have any idea where we are supposed to get all these books and supplies and stuff that we need for our first year at Hogwarts?"
Raven smiled faintly and replied, "I suppose there's no point in keeping it from you now, Harry. I have a bit of a rough understanding of the magical world."
"A rough understanding?" Harry echoed.
Raven raised her hand and pinched her fingers together, holding them about an inch apart. "This much understanding."
Harry let out a scoff. "I bet you have more than just one inch of understanding, Raven."
Raven gave a soft laugh. "All right, all right. It's not that hard to find the stuff we need. So I've interacted with the magical world a little bit. I may have some extra responsibilities that you don't honestly need to know about. All you need to do is be happy that I'm accompanying you to Hogwarts, okay?"
"Fine," Harry said, crossing his arms. "Anyways, let's go and get these books."
"All right, all right, Harry," Raven said.
Harry turned to Claire, who was folding laundry nearby, and asked, "Claire, can you take us to this place that Raven wants to go to so we can get our stuff for school?"
Claire raised an eyebrow and replied, "All right. Let me get my car keys."
Once they were inside the car and pulling out of the driveway, Claire glanced at Raven in the rearview mirror and asked, "Raven, where do we need to go?"
Raven leaned forward and said, "Head to a bar called the Leaky Cauldron."
Claire gave her a long, unimpressed side glance. "You want me to take minors to a bar called the Leaky Cauldron? Are you serious, Raven?"
"I know the name sounds kind of weird, but just trust me on this, okay? Everything will be fine," Raven said. "We're not actually drinking alcohol there. In fact, I think a lot of kids actually go there to drink a beverage they have called butterbeer. I've actually had it. It's not bad tasting, honestly. It's like a malted butter-laced drink. It's actually pretty good, kind of like a buttery root beer."
Harry raised his eyebrows. "Hmm, that actually doesn't sound too bad."
From Raven's shoulder, Medusa stirred and hissed, "Shh." Then snake said, "That sounds good, too."
Raven reached up and gently rubbed the top of Medusa's head.
Harry looked at the snake, his eyes widening. "Jeez, Raven, did that snake get twice as big again? Now that thing's over a foot long, isn't it?"
"Yep," Raven said with a laugh. "It's getting bigger and bigger. I think this little thing is absorbing my magical energy."
Claire sighed. "All right, Raven, just don't let things get out of control with your little snake Medusa. After all, I think both of you have quite unique tastes in pets."
Harry shook his head. "Speak for yourself, Claire. I'm not the one who took that snake as a pet. I was just letting it hang around."
Raven turned and looked directly at him. "You let that snake sleep on your foot while you were sleeping."
Harry blinked. "What? I was just letting it keep an eye out so that Claire wouldn't spy on me and see that I was sleeping through self-study time."
Claire turned her head with a frown. "You were sleeping through self-study time?"
Harry straightened in his seat. "No, no, no, I wasn't doing that, Ms. Claire. I swear I wasn't. I was learning. I know all that math stuff. I did well on the test."
"Mm-hmm," Claire said, unconvinced. "You better not be napping during self-study at Hogwarts."
They drove through the city until finally, Claire pulled up and parked in front of a narrow, grimy-looking establishment tucked between two modern buildings. She looked up at the old wooden sign and frowned.
"This is the place?" she said. "It looks like some sort of 1965 dive bar that a bunch of hippies and people who never shower go to."
Raven sighed. "Ms. Claire, you would be surprised at the distinct lack of hygiene a lot of these wizards have. So when we go in there, don't say anything about that."
Claire looked between the two of them and pointed a firm finger. "Both of you better not pick up any bad hygiene habits, okay? If I see either of you coming home during break and you haven't showered or look like you're half-shaven or something like that, you're both grounded for your entire summer vacation."
Raven and Harry replied in unison, "Yes, Ms. Claire."
Claire nodded. "All right, let's go."
They walked together through the weathered wooden door into the Leaky Cauldron. Inside, the dim pub smelled of old wood, smoke, and something slightly sweet. As they entered, a barkeeper behind the counter turned and called out in a gravelly voice, "Oh, Mrs. Raven, you are back again. Did you want a butterbeer?"
Raven waved him off. "No, no, I'm good. I'm just showing my guardian and Harry to Diagon Alley."
The man's eyes suddenly looked at Harry. He stepped out from behind the bar and peered closely.
"Bloody hell, is that Harry Potter?"
Harry pointed to himself. "Do you know me?"
The barkeeper, Tom, stared at him, his face slowly shifting into stunned recognition.
