Chapter 14 - First Year Books

Raven stood in the middle of Diagon Alley, slowly turning her head as she took in the crowded street. Enchanted signs creaked softly overhead, voices overlapped in a dozen accents, and magic hummed through the stone beneath her feet. Her expression tightened slightly as a practical thought surfaced. I don't have any money. The realization settled in with calm clarity. Purchasing anything normally is impossible.

Her gaze shifted, settling on the broad storefront of Flourish and Blotts. The tall windows glowed faintly with warded light, shelves packed tight behind the glass. Raven exhaled quietly. "That bookstore is an excellent place to acquire the magical knowledge that I need."

She moved into a narrow, shadowed corner beside the building, pressed her back to the brick, and let her power flow. Her body slipped out of normal space, substance thinning until she passed cleanly through the wall without sound or resistance. Inside, she remained invisible and phased, watching the interior of the shop with focused attention.

Rows of shelves stretched upward, packed with machical books humming softly with enchantments. This place is filled with magical knowledge. It's perfect. Raven drifted between the shelves, eyes scanning book spines until one title caught her attention. She reached out, fingers brushing it free.

A Complete History of the Wizarding World in Britain.

She inclined her head slightly. "I'll take this." Her shadow stretched upward, swallowing the book smoothly into her shadow.

Continuing on, Raven noticed a parchment list resting on a table while no one was nearby. She floated closer and read it, immediately recognizing it as the first-year required book list for Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Her eyes narrowed thoughtfully. First years are eleven. That meant she still had a full year before she would normally be recruited.

She memorized the list, then began moving through the shop with purpose, locating each title in turn.

The Standard Book of Spells (Grade 1).

A History of Magic.

Magical Theory.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

One Thousand Magical Herbs and Fungi.

The Dark Forces: A Guide to Self-Protection.

Each book vanished one by one into her shadow. There's nothing wrong with helping myself to a few free books, she thought. Then she paused, her eyebrows furrowing. Still, I should do something to make up for this.

Her attention shifted downwards. Several mice were nibbling at damaged bindings near the lowest shelves. Raven raised her hand. The creatures were killed instantly, leaving no blood behind, or trace. "That should help," she said quietly.

She considered further, then tapped the floor with her foot and whispered, "Azarath… Metreon… Zinthos." A subtle hex spread outwards, threading through the foundations of the building. Rodent-warding magic settled permanently into place.

Raven nodded once. At least I gave something back.

She phased back through the wall and emerged into open air, floating above Diagon Alley once more. "Where to next?" she said.

She reflected briefly. She would need a wand. Money. Other supplies. She hovered in place, arms folding loosely as she considered her options. "Should I rob Gringotts?" she muttered under her breath. Her expression remained neutral, analytical. "They're goblins. They won't miss a little gold."

Gringotts Wizarding Bank loomed ahead, white stone rising like a fortress. Raven drifted forwards and passed directly through the massive doors, unnoticed. Inside, goblins moved briskly between counters, ledgers, and carts, sharp eyes focused on their work.

Her attention was drawn immediately to the tunnel system descending deep beneath the bank. I should explore there she thought.

It was the weekend. Claire wouldn't check on her until in the late morning. Raven floated downwards, slipping into the tunnels as rails curved away into the depths. She noted with interest that none of the magical defenses reacted to her presence. My magic originates from outside this worlds magical system. So it doesn't register properly.

Vault numbers slid past as she descended. She entered Vault 349 and surveyed the piles of goblin gold stacked within. "I don't think anyone will miss this," she said quietly. Several thousand gold coins vanished into her shadow.

Funding secured.

She continued deeper. The magic grew heavier, denser, more complex the deeper she went. Protections layered on top of protections. The stronger the defenses, Raven thought, the more secrets they're hiding.
