Chapter 15 - The Power Within

The warehouse had turned into a battlefield.

Broken crates littered the floor. Dust floated through the air. The flickering lights above us cast long, twisting shadows across the cracked concrete.

Perfect territory for my bloodline.

The remaining hunters moved cautiously now.

Gone was the confidence they walked in with.

Now they understood something important.

I wasn't the same person they came to kill.

My chest rose and fell slowly as the darkness around my feet shifted like restless water.

Beside me, Kael stood with his blade raised, calm as ever.

Five hunters remained.

The leader stood at the front, his silver-marked armor glinting faintly in the weak light.

His glowing eyes locked onto me again.

"You are adapting faster than predicted."

I shrugged slightly.

"Yeah, that seems to happen when people try to murder me every other day."

The hunter didn't react to the joke.

"Your bloodline is awakening."

Kael spoke before I could respond.

"That is not your concern."

The hunter tilted his head.

"Everything about him is our concern."

Then he lifted his weapon.

The remaining hunters spread out instantly, forming a semicircle around us.

My pulse quickened.

"They really like surrounding people," I muttered.

Kael didn't move.

"Focus."

"I am focused."

"Then stop talking."

Fair enough.

The leader stepped forward.

"This will be your final test, Adrian Cole."

I raised an eyebrow.

"Funny. I thought the twelve assassins were the test."

"They were merely the introduction."

"Great."

Without another word, the hunters attacked.

Two rushed Kael.

Three came for me.

The first hunter moved fast, swinging a curved blade toward my ribs.

I shifted sideways and let the shadows carry my movement.

The blade missed by inches.

A tendril of darkness wrapped around his wrist and twisted violently.

The weapon clattered to the floor.

Before he could recover, I slammed a wave of shadow energy into his chest.

He flew backward and crashed into a stack of metal containers.

Two left.

The second hunter didn't hesitate.

He lunged low, aiming for my legs.

I jumped backward, but he was faster than the others.

His blade sliced across my jacket, grazing my side.

Pain flared instantly.

"Okay," I hissed, pressing a hand to my side. "That one counts."

The hunter advanced again.

But something inside me snapped.

Not fear.

Not panic.

Something deeper.

The bloodline surged violently through my chest, spreading like wildfire through my veins.

The shadows in the warehouse reacted instantly.

They rose from the floor.

From the walls.

From the ceiling.

All drawn toward me.

The hunter froze.

For the first time, hesitation flickered in his glowing eyes.

"What… are you?" he whispered.

I looked at my hands.

Dark energy spiraled around my fingers like living smoke.

"I'm still figuring that out."

The shadows exploded outward.

A wave of darkness slammed into the hunter and sent him skidding across the floor.

The third attacker came from behind.

But this time, I felt him before he moved.

Kael's training clicked into place.

The bloodline whispered its warning.

I turned before the blade could strike.

A coil of shadow wrapped around the hunter's arm mid-swing.

Another wrapped around his legs.

He struggled, but the darkness tightened like iron chains.

Then I clenched my fist.

The shadows slammed him into the concrete floor.

Hard.

The entire warehouse went silent.

I stared down at the three hunters lying motionless around me.

My heart was pounding.

But the power inside me…

It felt steady.

Controlled.

Across the warehouse, Kael finished disarming one of the attackers with a clean strike.

The last hunter standing was the leader.

He stepped forward slowly, studying the destruction around us.

"You are evolving faster than expected."

I wiped sweat from my forehead.

"You guys keep saying that like it's surprising."

The leader ignored the comment.

Instead, he lowered his weapon slightly.

"You have potential."

Kael's voice turned sharp.

"Do not listen to him."

The hunter continued calmly.

"You could survive what is coming."

I frowned.

"Pretty sure that's the plan."

"Not alone."

Kael stepped forward, blade raised again.

"That will not happen."

The hunter looked between us.

"You misunderstand."

His glowing eyes focused on me.

"I am offering you a choice."

I blinked.

"A choice?"

"Yes."

Kael's voice was ice cold.

"Adrian, do not—"

"Join us."

The words echoed through the warehouse.

For a moment, even the shadows seemed to pause.

I stared at the hunter.

"You're serious."

"Yes."

"You came here to kill me… and now you want me to join you?"

"Because now we understand what you are."

"And what's that?"

The hunter's voice lowered.

"A weapon."

The bloodline pulsed uneasily in my chest.

Something about his words felt wrong.

Cold.

Like chains tightening around my future.

I shook my head slowly.

"Yeah… that's not happening."

The hunter sighed.

"A disappointing answer."

Kael stepped beside me.

"You already knew his decision."

"Yes," the hunter admitted.

"But protocol required that we ask."

I raised an eyebrow.

"Protocol?"

The hunter lifted his weapon again.

"Termination will now resume."

I groaned.

"Why does it always come back to that?"

The hunter lunged forward.

Faster than before.

His blade flashed through the air toward my chest.

But this time, I didn't step back.

I stepped forward.

The shadows surged like a tidal wave.

They wrapped around the hunter's weapon, freezing it inches from my body.

His glowing eyes widened.

The darkness climbed up his arm like living vines.

"What… is this?"

I looked directly into his mask.

"This," I said quietly, "is why you should've stayed home."

Then I released the power.

The shadows slammed the hunter across the warehouse.

His body crashed into the far wall with a thunderous impact.

Silence followed.

The remaining hunters on the floor began retreating slowly, dragging their injured comrades toward the broken entrance.

Even the leader struggled to stand.

Before leaving, he looked back at me one last time.

"This is not over, Adrian Cole."

I leaned against a crate, breathing heavily.

"Yeah," I said. "I figured."

The hunters disappeared into the night.

The warehouse fell quiet again.

After a long moment, I looked at Kael.

"Well… that escalated."

Kael studied me carefully.

His expression wasn't relief.

It was concern.

"You felt it, didn't you?" he asked.

I nodded slowly.

"The bloodline."

"Yes."

I looked down at my hands again as faint shadows curled around my fingers.

"It's getting stronger."

Kael's voice was quiet.

"And harder to control."

Thunder rolled outside the warehouse as the storm finally reached the city.

Rain began to fall against the broken roof.

Somewhere in the distance, lightning flashed across the skyline.

I had survived another battle.

But deep down, I knew something had changed tonight.

The hunters were afraid of me now.

And somehow…

That scared me even more.
