A lump rose in my throat, but I swallowed it down quickly, lifting my gaze to the tree before me as though it were the most beautiful thing in the world.
At that moment… it almost was. At least, it would have been… If the man sitting across from me was not there.
My gaze shifted to him despite myself. And for a brief moment, I simply looked.
There was something unfair about it. The way he carried himself. The way he looked.
It made it seem as though the heavens had chosen him deliberately… shaping him with care while the rest of us were merely left to exist.
A quiet, almost bitter thought crossed my mind. God must have favourites. And he had clearly favoured this man.
I looked away at once, my expression tightening slightly before I could embarrass myself any further.
"Have you thought of a way to apologise?" he asked suddenly.
My head snapped up. His eyes were already on me.
"…For what?" I asked.
"For accusing me of murder," he said calmly.
