Chapter 21 - Chapter 20: The plan

The meeting proceeded mirroring the events Ulquiorra remembered from the Solo Leveling narrative save for one glaring, monstrous variable. The Deep Sea Dweller.

As Chairman Go Gun-hee spoke and Hanakawa translated, Ulquiorra remained a statue of pale indifference, though his mind was dissecting the anomaly. Back in Japan, he and Grimmjow had theorized about this creature's existence. There were only two logical conclusions: either this was an alternate reality where the "rules" of the original world were slightly skewed, or the entity that had resurrected them, the one pulling the strings of their new life was intentionally adding new obstacles to ensure their "entertainment" value remained high.

The thought of being a puppet for some cosmic audience made Ulquiorra's chest feel even hollower, but Grimmjow had merely laughed it off.

"Who cares if some god is watching?" Grimmjow had barked back in Tokyo. "New monsters mean new ways to break things. I'd rather fight something I don't recognize than spend eternity repeating the same damn script."

Ulquiorra knew his brother's "philosophy" was just influenced by his new powers and body and was nothing but a thin veil for his bloodlust, but as the Chairman detailed the Dweller's latest path of destruction, he had to admit the variable made the tactical landscape... unpredictable.

However, as the meeting dragged on, Ulquiorra noticed something far more practical. He realized he wasn't actually waiting for Hanakawa to translate. As Go Gun-hee spoke in his native tongue, the Korean words didn't sound like foreign noise; they translated instantly in Ulquiorra's mind, clear as the ringing of a bell.

He glanced sideways at Grimmjow. The blue-haired Arrancar was leaning back, his eyes darting toward the Chairman a fraction of a second before the translator even opened her mouth. For a fleeting moment, a look of sharp, genuine shock crossed Grimmjow's face, a subtle twitch of the eyebrow that only a brother would recognize.

'So, he feels it too. Whatever brought us here didn't just give us bodies but it would seem it also implanted the linguistic geography of this world directly into our consciousness. Efficient.' Ulquiorra thought.

Grimmjow caught Ulquiorra's gaze and gave a microscopic smirk, his eyes saying what his mouth couldn't in a room full of S-Rankers: mThis world is practically begging us to take it over.'

The high-resolution monitors in the conference room flickered to life, bathing the faces of the gathered leaders in a cold, blue glow. Chairman Go Gun-hee gestured toward the screen, where a series of satellite captures and sonar reconstructions began to play.

"This," the Chairman said, his voice dropping an octave, "is the Deep Sea Dweller."

The image that coalesced was nightmarish and the creature looked like a colossal, cephalopod-like titan that looked less like a natural creature and more like an ancient god of ruin. It resembled the legendary Kraken of myth, with a massive, armored mantle and eight primary tentacles that acted as colossal, muscular limbs, each reaching hundreds of meters in length. Its skin was a mottled, obsidian hide, thick enough to withstand the crushing pressures of the deepest trenches.

"It is not merely a beast of size," the Chairman continued. "It emits a localized bio-acoustic vibration. Those who get too close and survive describe a feeling of intense vertigo as if their very equilibrium is being liquified. On top of that, it possesses a form of sensory sonar; anything that touches the surface of the water within a five-mile radius is detected instantly. A surprise attack from the sea is impossible. To make matters worse, its hide is functionally impervious to conventional weaponry. Only concentrated S-Rank mana strikes have managed to even scratch it, and the mana cost for such an endeavor is... taxing, to say the least."

Grimmjow leaned back while staring at the eight-legged monstrosity on the screen with an expression that could only be described as hungry.

"Impervious, huh?" Grimmjow's voice cut through the professional tension of the room, speaking in fluid, effortless Korean. "Sounds to me like you've just been hitting it with toothpicks. You talk about air strikes and mana taxing like it's some complicated math problem."

The room stiffened. The Korean officials and Hanakawa stared at Grimmjow, their eyes wide not just at his arrogance, but at the fact that he was speaking their language with the casual inflection of a native.

Grimmjow smirked, pointing a thumb at himself and then at Ulquiorra. "A strike from above will do with me and my brother. We will drop in and peel that overgrown calamari out of its shell, long enough for your ships to get a clear path to the island. Simple. No need for your 'tactical maneuvers' or your spreadsheets."

Woo Jinchul adjusted his glasses, with his expression hardening at how simple the blue haired individual made it look, "Hunter Grimmjow, I understand you possess considerable confidence, but we are discussing a monster that has capsized fortified cargo ships and shrugged off coordinated military fire. As strong as you and your brother may think you are, an S-Rank designation does not make you a invincible. A creature of that scale cannot simply be taken down by two individuals, regardless of their origin."

Ulquiorra, who had been as still as a tombstone, finally shifted his gaze toward Jinchul. His emerald eyes were cold, reflecting the light of the monitors with a terrifying lack of emotion.

"Your mistake lies in your reliance on quantification," Ulquiorra said, his Korean was smooth and chillingly formal, "You attempt to measure our capability against a scale that you yourselves have defined. Because your hunters find the task 'taxing' or 'impossible,' you assume the limitation is universal. It is a flaw in your mentality."

He didn't raise his voice, yet the air in the room seemed to grow thin, as if the very oxygen were being squeezed out by his presence.

"Just because your 'S-Ranks' cannot pierce its hide does not mean its defense is absolute," Ulquiorra continued flatly. "To us, that creature is not a 'god of the deep.' It is merely a biological mass that has yet to be properly erased. Do not get me wrong, this isn't me bragging, we simply state a fact of efficiency."

The silence that followed was heavy. It wasn't the silence of disagreement, it was just astonishment at the way this man spoke and with such confidence in his words to believe it as merely stating a fact.

Suddenly, Chairman Go Gun-hee let out a deep, booming laugh that shook his massive frame. He leaned forward, his eyes twinkling with a mixture of amusement and genuine intrigue.

"Bravado!" the Chairman chuckled, shaking his head. "It has been a long time since I've heard such absolute certainty in this room."

The Chairman's laughter subsided, and he looked at the two brothers with a piercing, analytical stare.

'They don't have the eyes of liars. They have the eyes of someone who believes what they're saying. Is it possible? Could these two truly be capable of holding off the dweller long enough for us to carry out our raid? If they can actually bring that titan down without support... then Goto hasn't just brought hunters. He's brought a new world order.'

"Very well then," the Chairman said, standing up to signal the end of the meeting. "The joint operation begins in five days. If you are so eager to test your 'efficiency' against the Dweller, the world will be watching from the observation ships. I suggest you get some rest. You'll need it if you plan on making the ocean bleed."

The luxury sedan pulled away from the Grand Shilla's entrance, leaving the two brothers standing in the crisp night air of Seoul. The city's neon lights reflected in Ulquiorra's emerald eyes as he adjusted the collar of his tailored suit with a thoughtful expression on his face.

"It is confirmed, then," Ulquiorra said quietly, his voice carrying only to his brother. "The presence of the Deep Sea Dweller, an entity that did not exist in the records of the world we. We really are in an alternate iteration of this reality. Things will not proceed exactly as they were written."

Grimmjow let out a short, sharp huff of air and shrugged, his grin returning with a jagged edge. "I told you, didn't I? It means there are possibilities for things to be different. Maybe the 'King' of those ants isn't the only thing worth killing on that island. It would have been boring with you, me and Jin woo ganging up on beru you know." He cracked his knuckles, "This is gonna be a hell of a lot more fun than a scripted play."

Ulquiorra let out a soft, weary sigh, "Your definition of 'fun' remains consistently exhausting. We shall see. Regardless of the changes, we must prepare for the joint assembly. Tomorrow, we finally meet the Korean S-Rankers."

Grimmjow's eyes sparked with a predatory light. "Finally. It's about time we get to see the local 'talent' face-to-face, don't you think? I want to see if they've got more backbone than the suits in that meeting."

Ulquiorra nodded slowly while thinking to himself,'About time indeed. I need to see if Jinwoo is truly the anomaly he was meant to be, or if this world's changes have affected him as well. Plus who the hell wouldn't want to see the fucking drippy woo in real life?'

As they pushed through the gilded revolving doors of the hotel, they found Akari leaning casually against a marble pillar, rhythmically kicking a lollipop from one side of her mouth to the other. She was accompanied by Atsushi, who was checking his watch with a focused frown.

"Hey, guys!" Akari chirped, jumping off the wall with her usual high-octane energy. "How was the 'Big Boss' meeting? Did you make the Chairman cry, or did you actually behave yourselves for once?"

"We behaved," Grimmjow grunted, though his smirk suggested otherwise. "Mostly. We just told them we're going to turn their sea monster into a pile of sushi so their boats can actually move."

Akari's eyes went wide, the lollipop nearly falling out of her mouth. "Wait, you and Ulqi are handling the Dweller? Seriously? That thing is a nightmare! What about the ants? Who's going to help us clear the beaches if you two are playing in the deep end?"

Ulquiorra's gaze shifted past her, noticing Reiji walking briskly toward a waiting transport at the far end of the lobby.

"The Boss wants him with the division coming in to coordinate the secondary perimeter," Akari said, noticing Ulquiorra's look before he even asked. "Everyone is moving into position for the Jeju drop. It's getting real, really fast."

"Don't worry about the swarm on the beaches, Akari," Ulquiorra said, his voice calm and certain. "The ants will be... handled. There is someone in this country who is more than capable of managing the pests while we erase the obstacles in the water."

"Someone? You mean like a secret weapon?" Akari tilted her head, her curiosity piqued.

"Something like that," Grimmjow chuckled, shoving his hands into his pockets as he headed toward the elevators. "Now, if you'll excuse us, I need to get some sleep. I want to be well-rested before I start tearing tentacles off."

Akari watched them go, a small frown of confusion on her face. "Those two... they talk like they already know how the war ends."

"Maybe they do," Atsushi muttered, finally looking up from his watch. "And maybe we should be glad they're on our side of the fence."

———-

The atmosphere in the Sung household was a chaotic blend of domestic disaster and overwhelming relief. When Jinwoo stepped through the front door with his newly awakened and discharged mother along with his sister he froze in mild horizontal shock at the state of the living room.

Empty soda cans were piled like miniature monuments, pizza boxes lay scattered across the coffee table, and Jin-Ah's laundry seemed to have developed a life of its own, migrating across the furniture.

Jin-Ah let out a high-pitched, nervous laugh, clutching a throw pillow as if it could shield her from judgment. "Uh... welcome home?"

Jinwoo didn't say a word at first but gave her cheek a firm, playful squeeze on her cheeks. "Sis," he muttered, his voice a mix of exasperation and calmness, "I only left you for one week. One week, and you've turned the house into a mess."

"Hey! Studying is hard work!" she squeaked.

Their mother stepped between them, "Now, now," she said softly, placing a hand on each of her children's shoulders. "I have four years of housework to make up for anyway. Besides, we have six hands between us. We'll have this place sparkling in no time."

Watching her move and seeing the color in her cheeks and the genuine joy in her eyes, Jinwoo felt a lump form in his throat. This was what he had fought for. This was the prize at the end of every blood-soaked dungeon.

—————

An hour later, the house was clean, but Jinwoo's mind was in turmoil. He stood on the balcony, the cool evening air ruffling his hair. He pulled out his phone and dialed a familiar number. "Chief Woo Jinchul? It's Sung Jinwoo. I'm coming in to see the Chairman now."

The walk to the Association headquarters was short and when he entered Go Gun-hee's office, the Chairman looked up from a map of the Korean Strait, his face was with the weariness of a man carrying a nation on his back.

"Sit, Hunter Sung," Go Gun-hee said, gesturing to the chair across from him. He didn't waste time with pleasantries and gut down to business, "I wanted to inform you officially. We will strike in four days. This is the raid we've been preparing for since the day we lost Jeju. We are going in with everything we have. Would you... be willing to lend us your strength?"

Jinwoo leaned back, his eyes narrowing, 'Four days huh, It's the perfect opportunity to level up. The sheer amount of experience points in that nest... I'd hate to let it go. Under any other circumstances, I would have said yes…' before he finished the thought however.

He closed his eyes, and the image of his mother's face flashed in his mind. He remembered the way she looked at the sunlight today. He thought of Jin-Ah's laughter. The thought of leaving them so soon after her return, of stepping into a Rank-S hellscape where survival wasn't guaranteed and didn't sit well with him. Not this time.

"Well, sir..." Jinwoo began, his voice steady.

But he never finished the sentence.

Suddenly, Jinwoo's eyes snapped wide. Every hair on his arms stood on end. His shadow seemed to flicker and deepen as his own mana became riled up instinctively, roaring in response to an external stimulus.

'What the hell is that? Is that magic power? No… it feels too heavy,' Seeing Jinwoo's sudden rigid posture and the surprised look in his eyes, Chairman Go Gun-hee let out a small, knowing chuckle. "They're pretty far away in the specialized training wing, but I'm impressed you could sense them from here, Hunter Sung. There's no cause for alarm, though. Our S-Ranks and the Japanese delegation are just getting some exercise before the raid. If you're curious, we can go take a look."

Jinwoo didn't say a word, his face a mask of cold focus. In his mind, however, his thoughts were racing.

'Exercise? That's impossible. I can feel two enormous signatures that are crushing and overwhelming, completely unlike the rest of the S-Ranks.' He narrowed his eyes, 'Are those… even humans?'
