Chapter 2 - The First Quest

The rain intensified, each drop a sharp, cold impact against the deserted pavement. It created a relentless drumming sound that filled the empty streets. Kael stood unmoving, a solitary figure beneath the sickly, flickering glow of a streetlight. His gaze was fixed on the ominous crimson letters that hovered eerily in the air before him.

[Primary Objective: End the World.]

"…This has to be some kind of glitch," he muttered, his voice barely a whisper against the downpour. All around him, the city had dissolved into pandemonium. People were running, their screams echoing through the night. Others simply stood, mouths agape, staring at the sky as more and more glowing blue system windows materialized before their eyes. But Kael's display was starkly different. While everyone else was presented with bright, ethereal blue panels, his was a void of black. And the stark, blood-red lettering was chilling.

[Quest Generated]

Begin the Collapse

Description: The world teeters on the precipice of oblivion. Every ending, no matter how grand, commences with a single, decisive step.

Objective: Eliminate your first target.

Reward: ???

Failure: ???

Kael's brow furrowed in confusion. "Eliminate… what, exactly?"

As if in direct response to his unspoken question, a thunderous crash reverberated down the street. The very ground beneath his feet trembled violently. The sound of shattering glass rained down from the windows of nearby buildings. Kael spun around, his eyes darting towards the source of the disturbance. At the far end of the road, a colossal shape was painfully extracting itself from the ruined interior of a cracked building. Chunks of concrete rained down as it moved, its sheer mass crushing the asphalt. The streetlights flickered erratically, as if struggling to cope with its presence. And then, Kael saw it clearly.

A monster.

Its form was a nightmarish amalgamation of a wolf and an insect. A carapace of black, armored plates encrusted its body, while razor-sharp, jagged claws raked across the asphalt with a horrifying screech. Its eyes burned with an unnatural, malevolent yellow light. And it was immense, easily standing at least three meters tall. Kael's throat constricted, and his mouth went bone dry. "What the hell is that…?"

Another message materialized, this one crisp and informative.

[Monster Detected]

Ironfang Hound

Level: 5

The creature's head twitched as it sniffed the air. Slowly, deliberately, its glowing yellow eyes swiveled and fixed directly onto Kael. For a tense, drawn-out moment, neither moved, locked in a silent standoff. Then, a low growl emanated from the beast, a guttural, terrifying sound that seemed to vibrate through the very fabric of the street. Kael's heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. "Yeah… nope."

He spun on his heel and bolted. His shoes slapped against the wet pavement, sending sprays of water with every frantic stride. Behind him, the monster's roar tore through the night. The ground vibrated again as it began its pursuit. "Why me?!" Kael yelled, his voice hoarse with exertion and terror, gasping for breath between words. All around him, people scrambled in every direction, their panicked flights adding to the cacophony. Car alarms blared, their incessant wails a soundtrack to the unfolding chaos. The city had truly descended into madness.

Then, a stark red system window flashed into existence once more.

[Warning]

User is attempting to flee from assigned objective.

Kael didn't slow down. "Yeah, obviously!" he shouted back, his breath coming in ragged gasps.

[Penalty Risk Detected]

His eyes widened in alarm. "Penalty?!"

[Suggestion: Engage the target.]

"Are you insane?!" Kael shrieked. Behind him, the Ironfang Hound, with a sickening crunch of metal, smashed through a parked car, sending twisted debris flying through the air. The monster was closing the distance. Fast. Kael's lungs burned, each breath a searing agony, but he knew, with chilling certainty, that he couldn't outrun that thing.

Suddenly, another window shimmered into existence.

[Emergency Skill Granted]

Skill: Shadow Step (Level 1)

Kael blinked, momentarily stunned. "A skill?"

The system continued its ominous pronouncement.

[Shadow Step allows the user to move instantly through nearby shadows.]

The monster lunged. Its colossal claws ripped through the asphalt precisely where Kael had been standing mere seconds before. "MOVE!" he yelled, though it was more of a desperate instinct than a command. He automatically stepped towards the deep shadow cast by a nearby streetlight. For a fleeting instant, the world dissolved into pure blackness. Then, he reappeared, ten meters further down the street.

Kael stumbled forward, disoriented and shocked. "What—?!" Behind him, the monster let out a roar of pure, unadulterated confusion. Slowly, Kael's eyes widened, and a disbelieving grin began to spread across his face. "…Okay." He turned to face the creature. The rain continued to pour, a relentless curtain around them. The Ironfang Hound snarled, revealing rows of terrifyingly sharp teeth. Kael audibly cracked his neck. "So this is how it's going to be."

The crimson system window reappeared, updating itself.

[Quest Updated]

Target Located

Kael clenched his fists, his heart still pounding erratically. But this time, the urge to flee was gone. A dangerous, almost reckless smile touched his lips. "Fine." He met the monster's glowing eyes, a defiant glint in his own. "Let's see what happens when I actually follow your system." The Ironfang Hound coiled, preparing to lunge again. And Kael, with a newfound resolve, stepped back into the waiting shadows.
