Chapter 2 - Love and Humanity

Banhi Anirban

In the fading light of the late afternoon, Bahni glanced up at the sky for a moment. A line of migratory birds was slowly disappearing from one end of the sky to the other. Evening darkness was beginning to descend. From a distant temple came the echoing sound of a conch shell.

But Bahni's mind was not there.

The lines of worry on her face seemed to grow deeper. Whenever she thought about that marriage of understanding, something inside her chest stirred strangely.

It had happened only a few months ago.

Bahni had grown utterly exhausted from the cruelty of her lecherous husband. Their household had become a battlefield every single day. Insults, beatings, suspicion—her life had become unbearable.

That was when Anirban appeared.

Oni was a teacher at a local school. Quiet by nature, yet uncompromising when it came to injustice. One day, when Bahni's drunken husband was dragging her through the street and humiliating her publicly, Oni stepped forward.

That day's incident escalated very quickly.

Bahni's husband threatened Oni and even tried to attack him. But Oni did not step back. Instead, with legal help, he managed to bring Bahni out of that hellish marriage.

Soon the glare of society began.

"He has given shelter to an abandoned woman!"

"There must be some other relationship between them!"

Whispers and accusations spread everywhere.

To protect Bahni from the filthy gaze of society, Oni eventually made a proposal—

A marriage of understanding.

At first Bahni refused. But she had no other path left.

The marriage happened very quietly. There was no celebration, no grandeur, not even dreams.

But surprisingly, even after the marriage, Oni never tried to claim any rights over Bahni.

He had said,

"You are safe here. I don't ask anything more from you."

That day tears had filled Bahni's eyes.

Days slowly passed. Though they lived under the same roof, there remained a strange distance between them.

Oni lived his own way—reading books, going to school.

Bahni quietly managed the household.

Yet somewhere, an invisible bond was beginning to form.

Then one day news arrived—Bahni's former husband had died.

After hearing it, Bahni sat silently for a long time.

Relief?

Or emptiness?

Even she could not understand.

Just then, a new storm arrived in their lives.

One evening, someone knocked on the door.

As Oni opened it, an unfamiliar man said in a cold voice,

"Bahni is my wife."

Oni frowned.

The man smiled.

"I paid her former husband money. In exchange, he promised to give her to me."

At those words, anger blazed in Oni's eyes.

Could a human being be bought and sold like a commodity?

The man stepped forward.

"I've come to take what belongs to me."

At that moment, a trembling voice came from behind—

"I am not an object."

The air inside the room seemed to freeze.

Oni slowly stepped forward and stood beside her.

His voice was calm, yet firm.

"Bahni is now my wife. And more importantly, she is a free human being. No one can buy her."

The man laughed.

"I have the law and the papers."

Oni took a step closer.

"If it's the law you want, then come through the law. But remember one thing—I never bow to injustice."

For a few moments the man stared into Oni's eyes.

There was no fear in them. Only determination.

Finally, the man left, grumbling under his breath.

As soon as the door closed, Bahni quietly sat down.

Tears filled her eyes.

Oni said awkwardly,

"Don't be afraid. I'm here."

Bahni slowly lifted her head.

There was no claim in Oni's eyes, no possession—only responsibility and respect.

Suddenly Bahni felt that the relationship she had thought was merely an understanding was actually something much deeper.

Softly she said,

"Oni…"

Oni looked at her.

Bahni smiled faintly.

"Do you know? To keep a fire alive, it needs not only fuel… but also shelter."

Oni said nothing.

But in his eyes, a gentle light seemed to glow.

In the evening sky, the last migratory bird had already disappeared beyond the horizon.

Darkness had fallen.

Yet somewhere a light was still burning—

An inextinguishable flame.
