Which man in his right senses would not want her?
But that was exactly the problem…
He was not supposed to want her. Wanting her was dangerous for both of them.
And the last thing he needed was to give her any form of hope…
"No." He said softly.
Theodore felt her stiffen beside him, but she said nothing.
After a while of silence, she finally said, "I see."
Did she really?
Then she climbed to her feet, pausing to dust herself off.
"It was nice talking to you. We will see at breakfast." Then she glanced down at him.
That was when he saw it…
The despair in her eyes. There were no tears, but the look there was worse than tears to him.
And her shoulders had sagged somewhat.
"Wait." He climbed to his feet, clutching the dewy grass to ground himself before standing up.
"Yes?" She turned on him, her face calm and unreadable.
There was almost no trace of the despair he had seen there earlier. Except that her eyes did not look as vibrant as they had earlier.
