Later that afternoon, the Duke, Friedrich, and Candace returned to bid her farewell.
"The doctor should return this evening, but I am afraid I will not be present. If you need anything at all, please do not hesitate to ask Theodore. Who knew it would be a blessing that his chamber is just across the hall from yours," Friedrich said.
She and Candace exchanged knowing glances.
After exchanging air kisses, Candace left. Only Friedrich remained after his servants wheeled the Duke out of the room.
He looked composed once more, with his long hair slicked backwards and tied with a ribbon that matched the red overcoat he wore over his nude-coloured breeches.
"I have been feeling quite an amount of guilt for all you have suffered since you became a guest at my residence."
His eyes darted, looking at anything but her. A slow smile touched her lips.
"None of it is your fault."
He stole a glance at her face to see the genuineness of her words before casting his eyes to the window.
