Chapter 2 - CHAPTER 2; THE DEMON IN THE ALLEY

The fluorescent lights of Linhai Central Hospital felt like a distant memory now as Lin Yue stood frozen in the narrow, shadowed alley, his heart racing despite every effort to keep his breathing measured and even while the faint neon glow from the nearby street barely pierced the darkness to illuminate the slick, wet concrete underfoot.

The creature tall and impossibly thin with eyes that glowed a faint, unsettling red advanced with unnatural speed, its clawed hands scraping along the walls in a way that sent sparks of dread through him, and though Lin Yue instinctively stepped back, his mind frantically searched for any rational explanation that could make sense of what he was seeing, because no human could possibly move like that.

Then the shadows shifted again, revealing the weapon clutched in the demon's grasp: a curved black blade that shimmered with an eerie crimson light, and before he could even process the threat fully, a calm, confident voice cut through the night from above.

"Stop right there."

The words carried an effortless authority that seemed to hush even the distant hum of the city, and in the next instant a figure dropped from the rooftop with unnerving grace, black robes fluttering in the night wind while long dark hair framed a pale, angular face where crimson eyes glowed faintly, and in his hand a sword radiated an almost otherworldly aura that made the air itself feel heavier.

Time appeared to slow as Lin Yue's gaze locked with the stranger's, and the demon turned with a snarl before rushing toward this new arrival, yet the man in black moved faster still, drawing his sword in one fluid motion and unleashing a crescent of red light that sliced through the air and carved across the creature's chest, eliciting a horrifying scream that echoed off the brick walls while the stranger landed effortlessly in front of Lin Yue.

"Are you hurt?" he asked, his voice smooth and laced with a teasing edge that nonetheless carried an unmistakable undercurrent of danger.

Lin Yue blinked, struggling to find words. "W-who… who are you?"

The man smiled faintly, his eyes glinting in the dim light. "I should be asking you that what's a human doing wandering into this alley at this hour?"

Lin Yue's thoughts spun wildly because the word human landed strangely, as though the stranger were implying something unspoken, and he wondered fleetingly if he was even supposed to be merely human in whatever this moment had become.

The demon groaned as it recovered with alarming speed, its clawed hands shooting out toward the man, but he sidestepped with such effortless grace that Lin Yue's head spun from watching, and the stranger murmured almost playfully, "Not bad," before his blade struck again, forcing the creature to stagger backward and leave a faint trail of black smoke curling in its wake.

Lin Yue retreated another step, tripping over a discarded cardboard box and barely catching his balance. "You saved me?" he stammered.

The man tilted his head, crimson eyes scanning him with clear curiosity. "Seems like it though you've got an interesting aura about you, not quite normal."

Lin Yue frowned. "A-aura?"

The stranger smirked, visibly amused. "Yes you feel… different, like something inside you is waiting."

Before Lin Yue could press for clarification the demon screeched and charged once more, faster and more ferocious than before, yet the stranger's blade met the assault head-on, sparks flying in crimson arcs that briefly painted the alley walls red while Lin Yue remained rooted in place, overwhelmed by the impossible scene unfolding before him: the brutal elegance of the fight, the glowing sword, the inhuman speed of both combatants.

And then, in a moment that tightened his chest with something he refused to name, Lin Yue became acutely aware that the closer the stranger stood, the more his own heartbeat seemed to tangle with the man's presence in a way that felt strange, unsettling, and inexplicably intimate.

"Human," the stranger said, his voice dropping to a low whisper clearly meant only for Lin Yue's ears, "do you know what you're stepping into?"

"I… I don't know…" Lin Yue admitted, the honesty slipping out before he could stop it.

The demon lunged yet again, and this time the stranger responded with brutal, decisive speed, swinging his sword in a wide arc that sliced through the alley's shadows until the creature fell backward and dissolved into a thick cloud of black smoke that dissipated almost as quickly as it had formed.

Lin Yue blinked, still trembling. "W-who… are you?"

The stranger sheathed his sword with a casual flick of his wrist and stepped closer, close enough that Lin Yue could see the faint sheen of rain clinging to his dark hair. "Names are important—you can call me Mo Chen."

Lin Yue swallowed hard, the name carrying an inexplicable weight that settled deep in his chest. "Mo… Chen?"

Mo Chen's lips curved into a faint, almost gentle smile. "You're alive that's what matters for now but you should be careful because you're… very noticeable."

Lin Yue frowned, trying to grasp the meaning behind the words. "Noticeable… how?"

Mo Chen tilted his head, crimson eyes glinting with quiet intensity. "Like a beacon something in you is calling out to things that shouldn't exist in this city."

Lin Yue took a cautious step backward. "I don't understand."

"You will," Mo Chen said softly, "soon enough."

A sudden gust of wind swept through the alley, carrying the faint scent of smoke and ozone that made Lin Yue shiver, though he couldn't be certain whether the chill came from fear, the cold night air, or something far more profound stirring inside him.

Mo Chen noticed the reaction immediately, and his smile returned, playful once more. "Relax you're fine… for now."

Lin Yue's heart beat faster than he cared to acknowledge because something about this man dangerous, teasing, unnervingly confident left him feeling profoundly unsettled, yet he found himself unable to look away.

Mo Chen's gaze softened just a fraction. "Come with me if you wander out here alone again, I can't promise I'll be around to save you."

Lin Yue opened his mouth to respond, but no words emerged.

Mo Chen tilted his head again, clearly amused, and stepped even closer, brushing the wet strands of hair from Lin Yue's face with a touch that was surprisingly gentle. "You're stronger than you look I like that."

Lin Yue's pulse thundered in his ears as something dormant within him something he had never before noticed reacted sharply to the proximity, tightening his chest and making his fingers tremble faintly.

Before he could gather his thoughts Mo Chen's eyes flicked toward the deeper shadows of the alley. "We're not done yet—that thing isn't the only one hunting tonight, and you…" He looked back at Lin Yue with a slow, knowing grin. "You're going to be a problem."

Lin Yue swallowed, his mind reeling. "I… I don't even know what's happening."

Mo Chen smirked again, the expression almost fond in its entertainment of Lin Yue's confusion. "Don't worry—you'll find out soon enough, and trust me… you'll want to stick close to me."

For the first time Lin Yue truly felt that the night and this city were no longer merely the familiar backdrop of his life but something alive with hidden danger, something that had already taken notice of him, and standing there in the rain-soaked alley with neon reflections dancing across the damp walls he realized with a sinking certainty that his existence had shifted irrevocably, forever changed by the encounter he had never sought.
