Chapter 4 - REJECTING FATE

Elara's POV

Everything hurt.

That was Elara's only thought as she pushed herself up on shaking arms. The curse was spreading faster now. She could feel it in her bones. Feel it in her blood. The black veins had reached her shoulders and were creeping up her neck like poison ivy choking a tree.

The wolf inside her was getting stronger. She could feel it clawing at the inside of her skin, trying to break free. Trying to take over.

She would not let it.

Through the haze of pain she saw movement in the trees. Golden eyes glowing in the darkness. Multiple sets of them. Wolves. A whole pack of them surrounding her in a circle.

Elara forced herself to stay standing even though her legs wanted to give out. She raised her hands and summoned every last scrap of magic she had left. The violet flames were weak and stuttering but they were better than nothing.

The wolves stayed back, watching her. Waiting.

Then he came through their ranks.

The man was massive. Tall and broad shouldered with dark hair and eyes that burned gold like molten metal. Even in human form she could feel the power radiating off him. The kind of power that made the wolf inside her want to submit. Want to bow down and show her throat.

She snarled and forced it back.

But the moment their eyes met, something inside her chest snapped.

It was like lightning striking directly into her heart. Like the entire world suddenly made sense. Like two pieces of a broken puzzle suddenly finding their place. There was a pull. A rightness. Her soul reaching for his across the darkness like it had been searching for him since the moment she was born.

The mate bond.

Elara's breath caught in her throat. No. No no no. This could not be happening. This was not real. This was just another curse. Just another trick designed to break her completely.

"Stay away from me," she gasped, backing up in the snow. Her hands shook as she held the flames higher. "I know what this is. Another curse. Another way to control me. I will not fall for it."

The Alpha took a step toward her and she felt her wolf scream inside her chest. STAY CLOSE TO HIM it howled. CLAIM HIM it demanded. TRUST HIM it begged.

She hated it. Hated all of it.

"You are dying," the Alpha said, and his voice was deep and steady and something inside her wanted to listen. Wanted to believe him. "The curse is killing you. I can help."

Help. That was what Cassius had said when he first took her in as a child. That was what he had promised when she signed over her research. That was what he had whispered as she screamed during the cursing ritual.

Help had destroyed her.

"I do not need help from a wolf," she spat the word out like poison. The fire in her hands burned brighter, fueled by rage and betrayal and the desperate certainty that this was another trap. "Your kind murdered my family. When I was eight years old, rogue wolves tore them to shreds. Now the Council cursed me to become one of you. This bond is just another way to control me. Just another chain."

The Alpha's expression shifted. There was something in his eyes that looked like pain but she pushed it away. That was the bond trying to manipulate her. Trying to make her care about him. Trying to make her weak.

She would never be weak again.

"This bond is just another trick," she said, her voice shaking with emotion she could not quite contain. "I reject it. I reject you. I reject all of this."

The rejection seemed to hit him physically. His wolf surged forward, massive and black with those burning gold eyes. She saw him fight to keep control. Saw the struggle on his face between human and animal.

Good. Let him feel pain. Let him feel what she felt.

Elara threw all her remaining power into the flames. They exploded outward in a burst of violet fire directed straight at his face. It was desperation and rage and the absolute certainty that if she did not fight now, she would lose herself completely.

But he did not dodge.

The fire washed over him and he just stood there, letting the flames lick at his skin, letting them burn. His eyes never left hers. Golden and patient and full of something that terrified her more than the curse ever could.

Acceptance.

Like he was saying with his stillness that he understood. That he would take her rejection and her fire and her rage and he would still be there.

That was worse than a threat. That was worse than control. That was something that might actually break through her walls.

Elara's legs gave out.

The magic drained from her hands as her body finally gave in to what the curse was doing to it. The flames died. Her vision blurred. She was falling and she could not stop it and the snow was coming up to meet her and she was so tired of fighting.

Strong arms caught her before she hit the ground.

She tried to push him away but her body would not obey. The curse had spread too far. Her muscles were shutting down. Her magic was dying. Even the wolf inside her was getting quieter, like it was giving up too.

"No," she whispered. "Do not touch me. Do not..."

But her voice was fading. Everything was fading.

The Alpha held her against his chest and she could feel his heartbeat. Steady and strong and alive. She could feel the bond pulling between them like a rope trying to tie them together. Could feel his emotions bleeding into hers through the connection she did not want.

Devotion. Patience. Absolute certainty that she was worth something even though she was broken and cursed and wrong.

She hated him for it.

"I have got you," he said quietly, his voice the last real thing in a world that was falling apart. "I will not let you die. I promise."

More lies. Everything was lies.

But her body was so tired and his arms were so warm and the cold was stealing away the last of her strength.

Darkness crept in at the edges of her vision. The world got smaller and quieter. The pain faded into something distant and unreal.

The last thing she felt before unconsciousness took her was the bond thrumming between them like a second heartbeat.

And for just a moment, before the darkness pulled her under completely, she wanted to believe him.
