Chapter 9 - GROWING STRENGTH

Sophia's POV

Three weeks of training and Sophia barely recognizes her own body.

Her arms have definition now. Her legs are solid muscle. The soft Omega that arrived at the Blackthorne compound wearing a white dress is gone. Something harder has replaced her. Something dangerous.

The pack notices.

Warriors move differently around her now. They don't stare with pity anymore. They stare with respect. Some of them even nod when she passes like she's becoming one of them instead of remaining permanently beneath them.

Dorian pushes her harder each day.

He doesn't go easy on her anymore. Doesn't slow down his combinations or pull his punches. He treats her like a real fighter and it's both terrifying and exactly what she needs. Every day she survives another round. Every day she gets faster. Every day she hurts less.

Mira started training with her after the first week.

The Beta female claims she wanted a better sparring partner but Sophia knows the truth. Mira came to keep her sane. To be a friend when everyone else was either watching her like she was a threat or avoiding her like she was cursed.

They train together in the afternoons when the other warriors have left.

It's just the two of them in the empty training pit and Mira treats her like an equal instead of a rejected Omega. They work through combinations together. They correct each other's form. They laugh when one of them falls or messes up a move.

Today Mira is teaching her how to disarm an opponent.

"You're thinking too much," Mira says after Sophia's third failed attempt. "Your mind is in the way. Let your body understand what needs to happen."

"My body doesn't understand combat. My body is tired and sore and wants to take a nap."

Mira grins. "Then we're doing something right."

They run the combination again and this time Sophia doesn't think. She just moves. Her hand connects with Mira's wrist at the exact right angle and the weapon falls from her grip.

"There," Mira says breathlessly. "That's it. That's the moment when you stop being a girl and start being a warrior."

Sophia picks up the training weapon and hands it back to her. "I'm not a warrior. I'm just someone who's tired of being weak."

"Same thing," Mira says. She pulls Sophia into a hug and for a second Sophia lets herself believe that maybe she has an actual friend. "Come on. Let's get water."

They're walking toward the edge of the training grounds when Kaden appears.

He's just standing there watching her like he's been waiting for her to notice him. His dark eyes track every movement she makes. Every breath she takes.

Mira immediately steps back and bows her head in respect. "Alpha. I'll leave you both."

She leaves before Sophia can protest.

Kaden walks toward her slowly like he's approaching something wild that might bolt. "Again. From the beginning."

She's exhausted. Her muscles are screaming. But she nods and moves back into the training pit.

He watches her run through the combination Dorian taught her. Watches her move through the forms with precision. When she finishes he approaches and stands behind her.

"Your stance is wrong," he says quietly. "Here."

His hands touch her waist.

She should step away. Should create distance between them because this is dangerous in ways that have nothing to do with combat. But instead she leans back against him and his hands tighten around her.

"Feel the difference," he whispers against her ear. "Balance comes from grounding yourself. From understanding where your power lives."

She feels his body against hers and realizes her power has nothing to do with combat. It's about how he responds to her. How his hands tremble slightly when he touches her. How his breathing changes when she's near.

"You're stronger than you know," he says.

She turns in his arms so she's facing him. His hands stay on her waist.

"I'm terrified of what I'm becoming," she whispers back.

"Good. Fear means you understand the weight of power." He looks down at her and his eyes are softer than they've ever been. "Lean into that fear, Sophia. That's where real strength lives."

They're standing so close she can feel the heat radiating from his body. So close that one small movement would bring their lips together. So close that the mate bond is almost tangible between them. Almost alive.

He lowers his head slowly.

She knows she should step back. Knows that kissing him means accepting something she's been fighting since she arrived. But she doesn't step back. She tilts her head up toward him like she's been waiting for this moment her entire life.

His lips are inches from hers when Lysander's voice cuts through the moment.

"Alpha. We need to talk about the gathering."

Kaden pulls away immediately but his hands stay on her waist for another second. Like he needs that contact before he can let her go.

He releases her and turns to Lysander without looking back.

"Not now."

"It's urgent," Lysander says carefully. "The rival packs are arriving tomorrow. The gathering is happening whether you're ready or not."

Sophia's heart drops.

She's only been training for three weeks. She's stronger than she was but she's not strong enough to fight actual warriors. She's not strong enough to prove anything except that she's willing to get hurt trying.

Kaden looks back at her and she sees something in his expression that terrifies her. Resignation. Like he knows what's about to happen and he can't stop it.

"Go rest," he tells her. "Tomorrow everything changes."

That night she doesn't sleep.

She lies in Kaden's bed in the penthouse and listens to him moving around in his office. Moving around like he's preparing for war. Which he is. Because if she loses tomorrow the rival packs will have proof that the Alpha King is vulnerable.

Sometime after midnight she gets up and goes to find him.

He's standing at the window looking out at the compound. The warriors are assembling below. Preparing defenses. Getting ready for something they don't fully understand.

"What happens if I lose tomorrow," she asks.

He doesn't turn around. "You don't."

"But if I do."

"Then the rival packs will attack. We'll fight them. We'll win because we're stronger. But you'll be dead or captured and I'll have to spend the rest of my life knowing I got you killed."

She walks over and stands beside him.

"I won't let you do this for me anymore. I won't let you sacrifice your pack because you care about me."

He finally looks at her and his expression is raw. Open in a way she's never seen.

"Too late. I already am."

Before she can respond there's commotion below. Warriors are moving faster. Something's happening.

Kaden's body goes tense.

He moves to his office and grabs a communication device. Speaks quickly to someone on the other end.

"When," he demands. "How many."

He listens and his face gets harder.

"Get her ready. They're coming early. The rival packs are attacking tonight."

Everything happens in seconds.

Warriors burst into the penthouse and start moving Sophia toward the back exit. Kaden is already moving toward the door.

"No," Sophia says. "I'm fighting."

"You're not ready."

"Then I'll fail fast and you can end this."

He stops and looks at her and for a second she sees fear in his eyes. Real fear. The kind that comes from caring about someone more than you care about yourself.

"If you die I'm burning everything," he says quietly. "If anything happens to you I will burn this entire world to ash."

"Then don't let me die."

He walks back to her and pulls her close. Kisses her forehead like it's a promise. Like it's a goodbye.

"Come on," he says. "Let's go show them exactly how dangerous a rejected Omega can be."

The guards escort her to the training pit where warriors are assembling. Warriors from rival packs. Warriors who think she's weak.

Mira appears at her side with warrior gear.

"You've got this," the Beta female whispers.

Sophia looks out at the crowd and sees Kaden standing at the center of everything. Sees him watching her like she's the only thing that matters. Sees him believing in her in a way no one else ever has.

The first warrior steps forward.

He's twice her size. Scarred. Experienced.

Sophia takes a breath and steps toward him.

And everything goes very, very wrong.
