Chapter 10 - THE WOMAN WHO KNEW

Dr. Ben Edwards Johnson drove through roads that slowly disappeared from maps.

Past cell towers.

Past power grids.

Past the last hints of digital life.

He was searching again — for somewhere quieter, safer, farther from the tightening reach of SpectraCore.

A place where his daughter might one day stand without being hunted.

But for now…

His journey belonged to distance and silence.

And so, we leave him there — chasing the edge of the world.

Because something far more immediate was unfolding elsewhere.

---

The House Beyond the Trees

The road twisted into dense woodland before opening into a clearing where the air itself felt older.

The house waiting there did not look abandoned.

Nor welcoming.

It simply existed — like a secret that had grown roots.

Andrea stepped out of the car first.

"Stay close," she said quietly.

Baker smirked. "She already knows we're here."

Almost on cue—

The front door creaked open.

An elderly woman stood within the shadowed frame, her silver hair falling in long, unbound waves. Her posture was relaxed, but her eyes…

Her eyes missed nothing.

"Baker Rehanile," she said calmly.

"You took longer than expected."

Baker gave a small bow of her head.

"Madam Elsa Davina."

Marisa leaned toward Cassie and whispered, "She's terrifying."

"I heard that," Madam Davina replied without looking at her.

Marisa straightened instantly.

"…I like her," she whispered back.

They stepped inside.

The interior smelled faintly of old paper and rain.

Strange symbols curved along the wooden beams — not carved, but somehow pressed into the grain itself.

Madam Davina observed each girl slowly.

Marisa first.

Then Baker.

Then Lincoln, who had appeared silently near the doorway after shifting back from the form of a stray dog that had followed them unnoticed.

Her eyebrow lifted slightly.

"A shapeshifter. Good. Rare discipline."

Lincoln nodded once.

Then—

Her gaze fell on Cassie.

And everything changed.

Madam Davina went completely still.

For the first time since they arrived…

She looked afraid.

Not startled.

Not impressed.

Afraid.

The air itself seemed to hold its breath.

Cassie shifted uneasily.

"Did I do something wrong?"

Madam Davina didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she whispered—

"The agencies are already hunting you…"

Andrea stepped forward protectively.

"You knew?"

"I felt the disturbance weeks ago," Davina replied softly. "Power like hers does not arrive quietly."

Baker folded her arms.

"Say something helpful before you scare everyone."

Davina remained silent.

Studying Cassie as if reading a language written beneath her skin.

Then Baker muttered just loud enough—

"If the legendary Madam Davina is intimidated by a fourteen-year-old, I may need to revise my expectations."

Cassie shot her a look.

"Baker—"

But the spark had already been struck.

Emotion flickered.

Cassie's eyes flashed—

Brilliant blue.

Electric light spilled briefly across the room.

The candles along the far wall bent toward her flame like flowers chasing sunlight.

Madam Davina inhaled sharply.

Then she leaned toward Andrea and whispered words meant for no one else—

But the room was too quiet.

"This girl…"

"…is the Queen of Magic."

The sentence seemed to ripple outward.

Marisa blinked.

"Queen is… a big word."

Davina straightened slowly.

"Not a title given lightly."

Andrea's voice was steady but tight.

"Explain."

Davina moved toward a circular table layered with ancient texts.

"For centuries, there have been six."

She opened one of the books.

Symbols shimmered faintly.

"Six women across time who rose beyond all others. Anchors of magical equilibrium."

"Born with power?" Cassie asked.

Davina shook her head.

"No. Every queen before you earned it through decades of discipline… sacrifice… transformation."

Her eyes returned to Cassie.

"They were in their thirties. Some forties. Fully formed when the crown found them."

A pause.

"You are fourteen."

The weight of that settled heavily.

Marisa whispered, "Overachiever."

No one laughed.

Davina continued—

"Each queen shaped roughly a century of hidden history before yielding to time."

Andrea's voice lowered.

"And Cassie?"

"Born crowned," Davina said simply.

The room fell silent.

Lincoln spoke at last.

"If SpectraCore captures her…"

Davina's expression hardened.

"They will not merely study her."

She looked directly at Andrea.

"They will use her."

Cassie felt cold despite the electricity humming beneath her skin.

"How?"

Davina's voice was grave.

"The Queen is not only powerful… she is magnetic."

She touched the page gently.

"Other gifted individuals will feel her existence. Some will come willingly."

"And some?" Andrea asked.

Davina met her gaze.

"…will be drawn against their will."

Baker exhaled slowly.

"So Kingston wouldn't just gain Cassie."

"He would gain a kingdom," Davina replied.

Andrea's protective instincts surged visibly now.

"Then we keep her hidden."

Davina nodded.

"For now."

Cassie looked down at her hands.

"They keep calling me a queen," she whispered.

"But I don't feel like one."

Davina stepped closer.

"That is precisely why you may become the greatest of them."

Cassie blinked.

"Power without hunger is rare."

Outside, thunder rolled faintly across the distant sky.

Davina's gaze drifted toward the sound.

"The world is shifting," she murmured.

Then she looked back at Cassie.

"And it has already begun to recognize its sovereign."

Cassie swallowed.

"I don't want anyone forced to follow me."

Davina's expression softened — just slightly.

"Then you must grow strong enough that they never have to."

Andrea placed a steady hand on her daughter's shoulder.

"You are not facing this alone."

Baker smirked lightly.

"Queens still need advisors."

Marisa raised her hand.

"I call emotional support."

Lincoln added quietly—

"And defense."

For the first time since the words were spoken…

Cassie didn't feel crushed by the crown forming above her.

Just aware of its weight.

Far away, lightning flickered across the horizon.

Not striking.

Waiting.

And deep within SpectraCore, Kingston stared at a silent map and said softly—

"Queens are not meant to hide forever."

The game had changed.

He could feel it.

And somewhere beyond science…

Something ancient had awakened.
