Chapter 6 - Five

you are going on a date

essa pov

I'm getting ready for bed when Bobby shows up at my door, knocking loudly until Mom opens the door. "Bobby? What are you doing here?" She's so surprised she forgets to be formal. I can hear her all the way from the bedroom where I've only started to change clothes. When I hear her say Bobby's name I quickly redress and stand by the door, listening, my heart pounding.

He must be coming to tell me what happened with Draven and I'm almost too excited to be still and wait. I can hear him talking on the other side of the bedroom door. "I'm here to see Essa. Is she here?" he asks.

Cass is sitting on her bed, her nose in that book, looking up for a second. "What does Bobby want you for?" she asks, but I'm too excited to be offended. Instead I just shush her and press my ear to the door.

"Yes, she's in her room. Essa!" Mom calls and I tentatively open the door and poke my head out.

"Yes, Mom?" I ask innocently, pretending to be surprised to see Bobby. "Bobby, what are you doing here?"

He grins at me. "I'm here to ask you if you would like to walk with me," he says charmingly.

Glancing out the window at the night sky I ask, "Isn't it a bit late? It's dark out."

He smirks at me, and says, "Ah, but there's still plenty of light. The moon's full tonight, and if you're worried about cold, just grab your coat." He gives me a meaningful look. "Besides, we have things to talk about."

Mom gives me a strange look, but she nods. "You can go, Essa. Just be back before 11:30, alright?" She gives Bobby a warning look, and he smiles warmly at her.

"Of course, Mrs. Wilde. I'll have her back by her curfew," he promises, and I can see her caving. I don't even bother to grab my coat as I follow Bobby; summer nights here are always as warm as the day. He holds the door open for me as I walk out and he quickly follows, grinning like an idiot. "So can you guess what I came to talk to you about?" he asks as the door closes behind us.

I roll my eyes. "I assume Draven," I say, trying to mask my eagerness. "But maybe I missed a dirt speck when I cleaned your room. You know, if you want your room clean, why don't you do it, that way if t's not to your liking you have no one but yourself to blame."

I expect him to get mad, but he smiles wider. "My room is perfect; you did great. Though you really didn't have to," he says, catching me off guard.

"Actually, I did," I scowl. "Your mom told me to, and we all know whatever she says is law."

He laughs. "You don't always have to listen to the mega-bitch." Now I'm really shocked to even hear him talk that way about his mother. Maybe he was telling the truth when he said he was getting tired of that house and his loveless family. "I'll cover for you." Even though he says that, I know I'd never ask him to do that. "Anyway, you were right the first time. I come bearing news of Draven."

I can't hold it back anymore. I let out a squeal of excitement. "Really? What'd he say?"

He smirks again. "So you do have emotions." Of course I have emotion; what does that mean? "But yeah, you're going on a date. Tomorrow night, at seven. Dinner and a movie."
