Chapter 185: Before the Hunger — The Lord of Mercy (Part XVIII: The Echoes of the First Age)

"Every civilization believes it stands at the peak of history. Every ruined civilization once believed the same."

Inscription found beneath the First Sanctuary. The Council of Seven dispersed.

Kings returned to their kingdoms.

The Vorthari carried their star charts back to their moving city.

The Eshkarai disappeared into the hidden places of the world once more.

But no one left unchanged.

For the first time in recorded history...Every great power agreed on one terrifying truth.

Something ancient had awakened.

No one knew what.Only that the world itself had begun to respond.

Beneath the First Sanctuary

Three days after the council, Astraeus departed without explanation.

Only Auren followed.

Their destination lay beyond any marked road, across valleys untouched by kingdoms and forests so old that even sunlight struggled to reach the ground.

After nearly two weeks of travel, they stood before a mountain split cleanly down its center.

At its heart rested a pair of colossal stone doors. Each door was covered with carvings far older than the kingdoms of men.

Not battles.Not kings.

People helping one another.

A mother lifting a child.

A stranger offering bread.

A warrior lowering his weapon.

A healer treating both friend and enemy.

Auren frowned."This... is a sanctuary?"

Astraeus nodded."The first one."

The Hall of Origins

The doors opened with a deep rumble.

Dust drifted through shafts of pale light.

Inside stretched a hall unlike anything Auren had imagined.

Massive pillars disappeared into darkness above.Murals covered every wall.

They did not depict gods creating humanity.

They showed humanity creating itself.

Learning.Failing.Growing.

At the center of the chamber stood seven empty pedestals arranged in a circle.

Each bore the symbol of one virtue.

Mercy.

Wisdom.

Courage.

Justice.

Hope.

Creation.

Sacrifice.

The pedestal of Mercy was cracked.

Not broken.But damaged.

Auren reached toward it.

Astraeus stopped him.

"Listen."The chamber was silent.

Then, very faintly...A heartbeat echoed through the stone. The First Age

Astraeus walked slowly between the pedestals."The world remembers more than history."He said.

"When enough people embody a virtue"

"The world's Aether resonates with it."

Auren listened carefully."The Seven Guardians weren't chosen."

Astraeus continued."They emerged naturally." "They inspired others."

"They strengthened the balance."

"And when one abandoned their virtue..."

"The world itself weakened."

Auren looked at the cracked pedestal.

"So someone abandoned Mercy?"

The Wanderer closed his eyes.

"No."

"They redefined it."

Meanwhile, Myra returned home.

The Hall of Names welcomed another visitor.

A young boy no older than twelve wandered quietly through its corridors.

He stopped before the name of his mother.

He had lost her to the great war years ago.

Myra found him standing there.

"I don't remember her face."He admitted.

"I'm afraid I'll forget."Without a word, Myra knelt beside him. "What did she love?"

The boy thought for a moment.

"She used to whistle while baking bread."

Myra smiled."Then every time you hear someone whistle"

"You'll remember."

The boy laughed through his tears.

As he left, he began quietly whistling the melody his mother had once sung.

Myra watched him disappear into the afternoon sunlight.Perhaps...memory was another way people remained alive. The Crimson Pilgrim

Far to the south, the hooded traveler from the council entered another forgotten ruin.

This one contained a shattered statue whose face had long since eroded away.He removed his hood. His appearance was utterly ordinary.Forgettable.

If someone looked away for even a moment, they struggled to remember what he looked like.He placed his hand upon the broken statue.Crimson Aether spread like veins through the stone. The statue's eyes opened.

Not alive.Awakened.The traveler bowed.

"The First Sanctuary has been entered."

The statue answered in a voice like grinding rock."We know." "She still refuses."

"For now."The traveler's expression remained calm."There are six others."

The statue's eyes dimmed once more.

"Then let the remaining stars be tested."

A Warning in the Stars

That evening, Vaeros climbed the highest observatory of the Vorthari.

His apprentices waited in silence.

He looked through the ancient celestial lens.

His face lost all color. The Star of Mercy had stabilized.But...Another silver star now carried the faintest trace of crimson.

Barely visible.Almost impossible to notice.

Almost.Vaeros whispered,"No"

"The corruption is spreading."

Deep beneath the First Sanctuary.Far below the chamber Astraeus had explored...Another room remained sealed.

Its walls were covered with names.

Not of kings.

Not of heroes.

Seven names.

Each had been deliberately erased.

Only their titles remained.

The First Mercy.

The First Wisdom.

The First Courage.

The First Justice.

The First Hope.

The First Creator.

The First Sacrifice.

As the chamber trembled, a single crack spread across the stone beneath the title The First Mercy. From within the darkness...A heartbeat answered.

Slow.

Heavy.

Ancient.

Not awakening.

Remembering.

And somewhere beyond sight.A voice whispered into the endless dark.

"The cycle begins again."
